Quote from: Necrohag on December 19, 2024, 01:58:25 PMI'd also put forward the album In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead by Unanimated for some more classic melodic black/death.

Seeing as there seems to be a bit of theme going here with Vinterland and Unanimated being mentioned, it might be good to add more of that Swedish, No Fashion records type stuff like the below:

Throne of Ahaz - Nifelheim
Allegiance - Blodörnsoffer
Decameron - My Shadow...
Setherial - Nord...
Lord Belial - Enter the Moonlight Gate

I've not heard of most of them so I'll check them out. Cheers!

It's got to be Absolute Elsewhere for me going by the outrageous amount of listens I gave it and the fact I keep returning to it at least once a week.

Necrophobic's In The Twilight Grey and Nile's The Underworld Awaits Us All are very respectable runner-ups.

Overall, it's been an absolutely fantastic year for Metal.

Similarly, the scream let out around the 5.30 mark in Black Horizons by Dissection:

Not what I was expecting to hear the first time I heard this tune.

Quote from: Necrohag on December 19, 2024, 02:00:27 PMDissection - The Somberlain & Storm of the Ligth's Bane
Sacramentum - Far Away From The Sun
Vinterland - Welcome My Last Chapter
Dawn - Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triarchy)

On a classic melodic black binge after a discussion in another thread. Pure class.

Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Watain - Casus Luciferi
Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun
Dawn - Nær Solen Gar Niþer For Evogher

On a similar binge myself.  :abbath: Far Away from the Sun could easily slot into my all time top 5. It's a savage yet gorgeous album.

I think, in terms of sheer consistency all the way through, it might just be the best melodic black metal of all time for me.

Quote from: Trev on December 19, 2024, 10:22:09 AMNinkharsag is another Dissection clone. Hadnt heard of them before they played Damnation last year but went to check them out they were great live

Keep meaning to give their albums a listen since then but still haven't got around to it!

Yeah, I really like their album The Dread March Of Solemn Gods. That 2nd track Under the Dead of Night is a banger. Soooooooo Dissectiony.

Came across a Chinese two man band today called Black Reaper with their album Celestial Descension. A great listen and also in the Dissection vein.

I'd also put forward the album In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead by Unanimated for some more classic melodic black/death.

Quote from: Paul keohane on December 18, 2024, 10:44:59 PMThe Spirit from Germany have a few very Dissection sounding albums.

The two 90s Dissection albums are essential imo.

Also it was this week 20 years ago they played Dublin, fuckin unbelievable gig.

Aye, I also really enjoy this band and should have mentioned them previously. Funnily enough a class hoodie I bought from their bandcamp arrived yesterday morning.

Their new album, Songs Against Humanity, that came out in October is one of my albums of the year.

Never even heard of it. Is it any good or what sort of thing is it? Not mad about Dissection if that makes any difference

It's basically a Dissection worship kind of band formed by the frontman of Obscura , Steffen Kummerer. It can be a bit on the nose at times (not as bad as Gruesome with their Death worship) but if you're itchin for that Dissection kick it'll do the job and to be honest it's very well done.

They have 5 albums at this stage so plenty to assault your ears with. :abbath:

Only had one listen to it so far but It'll be on repeat for the next while for sure. Quite the Christmas album...

You should give Far Away from the Sun by Sacramentum a listen if you haven't heard it. They're similar to Dissection, but are even better in my opinion. Far Away from the Sun is a masterpiece.

And to complete the trifecta, put Dawn - Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triarchy) on that list of things to listen to...

I'd make it a quadfecta (?) and add Vinterland's Welcome My Last Chapter to this elite meloblack list also.

Dissection's first album, The Somberlain, is a must too especially if you loved Storm of the Light's Bane. :abbath:

I second this motion.

The title track is one of the best black metal tunes ever crafted. Amazing album.

Quote from: Squigs on December 16, 2024, 04:48:59 PMWhat would your top Nile be? Black Seeds?

Funnily enough it isn't Black Seeds or Annihilation. I think I'd have to go with Those Whom The Gods Detest. Not a bad song on it at all and it's what I always stick on when I'm in that Nile mood.

Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Death - Symbolic
Metallica - ...And Justice For All
Vektor - Terminal Redux
Sacramentum - Far Away From The Sun (edited to include this beast)

That was incredibly hard!

Very hard leaving out the likes of Dissection, Blood Incantation, Necrophobic, King Diamond, Nile & Morbid Angel.

Holy fuck, I'm definitely hitting up that Manchester show.

One of my last bucket list bands I absolutely adore. :abbath:
