On the back of Pentagrime's comment, other than a forum and gig listings, what does everybody want to see on the front page?
Is there genuine interest in any of the following? Do you skip past it and jump straight to the forum?
Album reviews
Interviews
Gig reviews
Gig photos
Local metal news
Is there anything else you guys would like to see on the front page?
Anybody who wants to submit anything can email it in, or send me a message on the forum.

My two cents, id go for album reviews, gig reviews and interviews. Couldn't give a toss about gig photos and in the main forum and gigs forum you'll get all the local news you need.
-
All of the above sounds good. Gig photos can just be included with the gig review.
Is there an easy way of going back and forth from the forum to the front page?
-
I'd go for the reviews (Albums and lives), Interviews and local metal news. That'd be about enough for starters
-
There was a decent musicians forum on MI which was pretty handy, maybe worth having...
-
Thanks for the input everyone

There is now. The "Home" icon in the top menu will take you to the home page.

Added!

Is there any chance of changing the font used for the forum titles? The light blue font is really small. I realise there are other themes but I like the black look but it could use a little tweak.
-
What's the issue? Size, colour, or both? Mobile or desktop?
Also, please make new threads for different site related requests. This entire board is for things directly related to the running of the site, so it'd be nice to have everything in it's own thread.
-
So in terms of contributors , the following have all vounteered to do some writing so far: Me, Juggz, Floss
-
If anyone else is interested in contributing then please go ahead. You're all free to work on whatever you like, and I'll get it on the front page if it's of decent quality
-
The podcasts were always cool. I'd volunteer only for I have a voice that's about as exciting as Father Stone. Has Lorcan been alerted to this site yet? He wrote some interesting reviews on MI.
-
My favourite ritual on MI was always the gig discussion page, to see whats been posted and what people thought of gigs.
I'm dead happy to see a semblance of that returning so quickly on this new site!
However, i would fucking love a proper gig listings page on the site.
Although, it would have to be properly moderated and up to date constantly.
The one on MI wasn't the greatest, but the issue with the gig listing forum was that a gig could just slip onto page 2 or 3 with no replies and you would totally miss it.

Jesus man i make that joke about myself all the time ): i have an awful dreary voice meself!

There's the gig list on the main page:
https://www.metalwarfare.com/gigs/
Or are you talking about something different?
-
The From the Vaults feature was always a favourite of mine, great for finding out on some stuff I might have overlooked or missed
I did a few infrequent reviews, I'd be happy to do the same here whenever I have a bit of time

The podcast was a whole heap of work though I'd imagine, and would require someone with a decent set up and some experience in doing something like that before.. And what kind of format would it take? It'd be a bit rich to just copy the format of the MI one and I'm sure Phil wouldn't want to.
-
Can't say I've got much of a voice for podcasts myself! Besides, with my attention span it'd start off talking about death metal and 3 hours later I'd be ranting about how all landlords are cunts.
-
Total newbie here but seeing new Irish bands would be great.
-
Not sure if I should post this here or create a new thread, but can the "updated" logo be changed?
Feels like I'm on a metal bukkake site.
-
I would like to see the site logo done in Impact so I can think of GODFLESH every time I log in.

Well that's going to be impossible to unsee now, so thanks for that...
It's a temporary one until I get something more permanent sorted. If anybody wants to throw together a different temporary one then go ahead, but I should have a new one sorted soon!

Need to sign in to see that. Any chance of uploading it as an attachment to your post, or sticking it on a site like imgur.com?

I'll fix that when I get to the laptop this evening
-
New album reviews on the front page I think would be ace. I'd be more than willing to contribute also
-
The front page really needs to get some content, so if anybody wants to write a piece (about absolutely anything which interests you) then please go ahead and send it my way. I'll need to start writing some stuff myself.
-
I'll get the finger out after Xmas, had a few things in mind just haven't had a chance what with work lately
-
Would it be possible to set up a reviews@metalwarfare.com type address to get reviews submitted to? It might help generate some new content for it?
-
Could do. My plan was to set up accounts for anybody who is submitting, so it appears on the front page as a post from their profile, but if that's too much hassle for some people then emailing it in and me posting it with a credit is also viable.
Everything can be emailed to:
submissions (at) metalwarfare (dot) com

Not sure if this has already been suggested, but I think it might be worthwhile to have a "Classifieds" section.
The Musicians Forum is pretty much geared toward , well.... gear.
The Sales/Trades section is for exactly that - selling & trading..
Sure, there's sites like bandmix, gumtree, squeezebox, etc. but lets face it - if you're looking to set up a metal band/project then being able to advertise in a place exclusively for like minded people would be a massive bonus.
-
Maybe just rename sales/trades to classifieds and it should cover it all?
-
Fair point. Could go 1 of 3 ways:
- Posts go in the "Musicians" forum
- "Sales/Trades" gets renamed "Classifieds" and everything goes there
- A new board gets created
Any input?
-
Rename it to classifieds is probably the best and makes the most sense. Wouldn't add another board for it.
-
Yeah, I'd agree with just renaming the Sales/Trades to Classifieds. Makes sense.
-
Sales/Trades has been renamed. Cheers for the input guys.
-
Just submitted an interview to Ham there. So front page content is imminent!
-
Link from forum.metalwarfare.com to the front page - www.metalwarfare.com - could be a lot more explicit. When you're on the main forum page, it's not obvious that "Home" means some other page. Maybe some kind of stand-out link that draws attention to itself and to the fact that clicking on it leads to a whole other non-forum area.

First post on the site! Cheers for the work Jamie!
Check it out guys if you haven't already:

Agreed. I've changed it to say "MW Home". Is that any better or is it still unintuitive? I've also changed it so if you click on the "Boards" menu option on desktop it'll take you to the main forum index. It'll expand the board list if you're on mobile. Clicking the banner will take you to the forum index on all browsers.
-
So, what's the craic with the front page then? Will there be album/live reviews, or interviews? I'm just curious as the page has remained the same for ages.
-
It's creeping up on a year and the front page has been doing very little and it looks pretty bad. I've updated it so it defaults to the gig listings. At some point I'll maybe add other sections for some relevant stuff like venues, recording studios, distros etc.
Reviews and the likes might be added at some point in the future, but for now it doesn't look like it'll be happening
-
Yea, why not?
-
I'm going to guess the answer to that is because "Nobody has been arsed to do them".
-
Filling front page content on a site is a pain in the hole.
If it's not your full time job where you can commit the time, or at least a paid concern, then it's just not worth it.
I'm in the same situation with the Irish Metal Archive.
For the most part I just tip away at adding band profiles and adding to existing band profiles.
But reviews and such are just a nightmare to keep on top of.
And adding gig listings is even fucking worse...
As much as it was a huge hit in the sack to the Irish Metal Community, I can totally see why CT ended Metal Ireland so abruptly.
-
CT had run out of people to write for him I think anyway. It was just him, that dreadful lad who kept writing about shitty punk bands and maybe one or two irregular contributors. It was a constant pain in the arse for him alright, at one point he had a bunch of us contributing regularly -to the point were there were little Skype "staff meetings" for a bit - but people have other stuff going on in their lives, y'know
