Title: Got bass?
Post by: Juggz on November 29, 2018, 10:27:56 PM
It can't be all guitarists here, surely? Any low frequency appreciation in these parts?

I started out on bass before moving to guitar, a good while ago now. I still keep a bass around to play every now and then if I feel like it, it can be an enjoyable instrument to play. My ability to play with my fingers has gone to hell though, I have to play with a pick these days.

Initially started off on guitar as most do, then once a band needed a bassist so I decided why not. Started off with a plec but then started getting decent with fingers and some thumb slap. Nowadays it's mainly plec, no way can I play anything fast with my fingers unless I had more time for practice.

Being a lefty it's hard to come across decent basses. So thanks to a chap up North I nabbed a lefty Warwick 5 string thumb bolt on around 2010 for 900 sterling which was a steal at the time. Just realised I don't have a standalone pic of it, must sort that out ->

For novelty reasons I got a brice 6 string bass....was kind of a pointless purchase as I hardly used it.

Also have a Dean Edge 4 string that I used for gigging ->

And for messing around at home, a Ibanez SR600L-NTF, really like the feel to this bass ->

You cannot go wrong with a Warwick Thumb, lovely bass.

I bought an Ibanez BTB from Gumtree a few years ago. There's a few dings in it but it plays nicely. Always had trouble trying to identify the model as most of the BTB series seem to be 5 strings. Currently in the process of recording some fairly hefty doom with it,

What basses do you have Juggz? The warick thumb is what I'd bring into the studio time after time, is there anything else to consider? I feel it can cater for all scenarios, I brought the other basses in but none of them were up the job. I'd love to hear some other recommendations, I play from the standard C to drop A range if that helps.

What tuning is that in? Out of the basses I've played, the ibanez and dean are pretty much in equal measure with the warwick thumb coming out on top overall. I've used a Darkglass Microtubes B7K for recording and I have to say, if you want something to beef up your bass, this is the pinnacle. Absolute beast of a pedal, very much worth the purchase.

It's made for standard tuning, but I've been buying 5 string sets and sticking the 4 thicker strings on it so it tunes to B. Allows me to pair it with my 7 string guitar. Handles the heavier strings with no issues.

Haven't touched a real pedal or amp in a while. It's all software for me these days.

Any decent bass can cover any scenario. Everything else is just nice to have. You don't need anything else other than that Thumb, for sure, but there's no harm having some options.  ;)

I've scaled back a lot over the last couple of years. I found that I was looking for reasons to play some basses I had so I sold off a good few, still more to go. I'm sticking with these ones.

ESP 400 Series which I've had since the early 90's, still the nicest bass I've ever played. I recently put a Noll preamp into this for a few extra options, but it also has a passive bypass circuit so the old passive tones are still in there.

Warwick SS1 I picked up cheap as a repair job and it needed tonnes of work. It was in terrible shape, utterly fucked frets, stripped truss rod, ropey electrics and looked like it had jaundice. When I started playing there was one of these in a shop in Portobello and it might as well have been a ticket to the moon, it was that unattainable at the time. To finally get one, from that era, years later and practically bring it back from the dead got me emotionally attached.

I go through periods where I get back into playing fretless and, for now, this is Marceau is hitting the spot. It's basically a defretted jazz but I like the looks odd of it and it sounds just right.

I've had this a long time and it never worked for me. I replaced the neck last year and that did the trick. It's got Q-Tuner pickups, a John East/ACG filter preamp and now a Warmoth neck and does all my low tuned stuff.

Fretless aside, I could have just one of them and all would be grand.

I have an Ibanez 828le from the 80s. a great neck, like a guitar version of RG. I used it when playing a tour for another band, but I suck at bass as much as I suck on the guitar.

An old mate of mine used to have one of them back in the early 90's, amazing neck. Those late 80's Japanese RDs and SRs are amazingly underrated basses.

Guess it is "too much as an ibanez shred guitar" in a way. That is why the general playing public was passing on them. But am surprised that the Metal bass players
were not jumping at it.
The active electronics are quite cool too. Not the high class, but good. It sounded monstrously huge with a Sansamp.

PS
Too bad I am computer illiterate and can not post pictures.....these basses are beautiful, love the red one I am having. And they are not even that expensive.

Sweet. Does it have the red logo Lo-Z or white logo AFR pickups?

You may think they're not high class, but Unquestionable Presence, Extreme Aggression, Coma Of Souls, Practice What You Preach and Souls Of Black, just off the top of my head, I know there are loads more, were recorded with the Lo-Z pickups  :D

You are right......my views got distorted with age and "butique" shite talking. All the albums you have listed are milestones of my youth, and these pick ups did a great job on them.
