Been listening to Evoken a fair bit of late, and was thinking for how much I like the music I know very few other good funeral doom bands.
Would very much appreciate some recommendations.
Did you ever try Abbotoir from Belfast?

I'm a fan of Shape of Despair and Ahab alright, great bands.
Liking the sound of Stabat Mater, very unsettling vibes from that tune, and Ophis sound pretty good. I have to check out the rest still.
I only found out Evoken had a new album drop earlier this month called Hypnagogia, gonna have to get my hands on that. Hope it can match the last one.

Mournful Congregation are great.
Officium Triste not been mentioned yet? Great band.

Bell Witch would be an obvious rec, though you've probably heard em.
Yes to Stabat Mater, much prefer it to his Clandestine Blaze stuff. A little off-piste but Funeral Mourning is good, definitely funeral but with a more 'black' atmosphere. Good late night headphone music

Wormphlegm is wicked!
My favourite two are Ahab and Skepticism.
Ahab:

They haven't released anything in almost four years now so hope they are recording or rehearsing or something.
Skepticism:

I had a chance to see them in London a few years back when they performed in some church, shame I didn't make it.
A lot of good stuff here. This is my standout funeral doom album which I keep returning to:
Disembowelment - Transcendence Into The Peripheral (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TcQ6C4Nt1k)

Is it really Funeral doom though? I'm very confused about what Funeral Doom actually (I thought it was just bands ripping off Thergothon?) as but I thought this would be more Death/Doom particularly given the speed of bits of it. Disembowelment are absolute kings though. Much as I worship this album I have to say the "Dusk" versions of some of these tunes, particularly "Cerulean Transience..", are my favourites. Got a deadly Disembowelment shirt towards the end of last year as well!

Have to agree, one of my all time favourites that I seem to return to every year

This song blows my mind.
I received the reissue of Thergothon's 'Fhtagn-nagh Yog-Sothoth' demo LP today. It looks great, has full lyrics and band photos I've never seen before and also contains two bonus rehearsal tracks. I haven't given it a spin yet, so I can't comment on the sound but these songs just grow on me more and more as time passes. Such a fantastically unique entity. To think the members were all between 15 and 17 writing and recording this demo is frightening.
Fuck it, I fired it on when I should really be going to bed. Sounds the business. So gnarly. I really think that funeral doom loses something when it becomes too polished. Give me the fucked up sounding shit any day.
How does the sound compare to the original demo and the CD reissue? I got the demo way back in the day from the band but somewhere along the way my fucking brother taped over it with dance music! The CD packaging looks great but they added a huge reverb to the sound, possibly to mask the poor sound of the demo. The demo sound was indeed lacking but, given the style of music and the lyrics, it almost seemed to work in its favour - giving it an almost fatalism which fitted perfectly with the tales of human cosmic insignificance.
I only have a taped copy of it that Pentagrimes made for me years ago. I'm not sure what version he recorded it from. The sound on the new vinyl version could only be described as noisy but clear. Everything is audible but it's not exactly polished sounding
Svart put up pre-orders for a vinyl edition of Skepticism's 'Alloy' as well as a 2CD edition including the 'Aes' EP. I have both CDs but that vinyl is a mandatory purchase 8)
Where's the best place to start with Skepticism? I know ive heard of Stormcrowfleet before!
Stormcrowfleet is fantastic and the remastered Svart edition is well worth picking up. The original, musty and distant sounding Red Steam edition is cool too, if you're into a more obscure sound.
Alloy is monumental and has a clearer production. Simply epic in all respects.
Their last one, Ordeal, is phenomenal in my opinion. It was all recorded in one take at a gig so it has its rough edges but I wouldn't want it any other way.
Some of their other stuff I find a bit hard to get into.
Love Skepticism, still regretting not seeing them in London with Pantheist when they played in St Giles church.
Anyhow, not theoretically Funeral Doom, but the pace and heaviness of it always reminds me that they have been classified wrong is Disembowelment. Transcendence into the Peripheral is one of my all time favorite albums and still I go back to it every few months.

Great band indeed, but more death doom. Only actually came across them this year and promptly purchased The Death of Gaia:

Some great recordings on Transcending Obscurity led me to it. I was aware of OT for years but never actually checked them out. Considering they're going for over 25 years, is there something that tops this? Hat tipping Chorus of Ruin as an influence is a rarity I reckon, and perks the interest for checking out earlier material. Thanks in advance for any pointers.
One of my favourite funeral doom releases:

One of my favourite records/bands in any genre of all time. Having said that, I much prefer the version of "Cerulean Transience.." on "Dusk" than on the album. The end section on that still sounds as magical to me nowadays as it did when I first heard it when I was 16 or whatever. Magnificent. I don't think people nowadays really appreciate how groundbreaking they were. Every time you hear a death or doom band put a clean riverbed guitar line over a big riff, these lads invented that
The recent Worm album "Gloomlord" is worth checking out if you're a Disembowelment fan.
New Skepticism on the way!

Can't feckin wait. Ordeal was a beaut.

A new Skepticism song is up. It sounds like they hit the hard epic crescendo button at the start and just kept rocking it hard right until the end. Is it September yet? Is it September yet?......

A second song from 'Companion' quietly snuck out a few days ago. It sounds good to me. I'm really looking forward to this album. Skepticism are simply leagues ahead of the funeral doom pack in terms of innovation and class.
Really enjoyed that. There's also a video:
