Title: Slane 26th June 2027 - Fontaines DC / Hayley Williams / Damien Dempsey / Others
Post by: The Butcher on August 31, 2026, 01:33:18 PM
Usually a Slane thread due to GNR, Metallica in the past few years but what is going on here

Funny seeing people moaning they aren't supporting the likes of Oasis at it.

Damien Dempsey is the only name a i recognise on that short list, but wtf? Isnt Slane supposed to be a mecca for big rock acts, or at least biggish pop acts? Who are these nobodies?

Fontaines are huge headlining the likes of Reading and Electric Picnic, and Haley Williams is the singer of Paramore.

Fontaines & Haley Williams are both world famous. Nice to see Madra Salach get a push here too. A great look for Irish artists.
I saw Fontaines outdoors in Manchester last year. They are not for me at all but the young crowd adores them.

Hate to use this metric but seeing as there's no real "charts" anymore - Fontaines get about 8 million streams on Spotify, Hayley W gets about 2-3 million. Previous Slane headliners Luke Combs (26million), Harry Styles (64), Metallica (32) and GNR (39). It's definitely a big drop down in terms of scale of performers. I agree it's a great showcase for Irish artists in general but feels above their station for now.

Interesting seeing them take a bit of a chance with Fontaines. I think they're only the 3rd Irish act outside of Thin Lizzy and U2 to headline Slane? This will probably sell fine. Hayley Williams has a big following and this will draw in a big crowd just for the occasion, people are just going mad for big gigs these days. Would be interested seeing who else gets dded to the bill if they have the likes of Madra Salach on there already.

Don't think it matters who's playing, they know it'll sell out with the event junkie crowd. Probably figure they can get an even bigger profit going with smaller bands

Jesus that's an awful line up, nobody there I'd even have a slight interest in. As mentioned above, they probably save a few bob on the bookings and clean up on tickets as they know the event junkies will go just to feed their Instagram accounts.

Wouldn't have thought they were at Slane level but it's great to see an Irish guitar based band playing a gig that size whether you like them or not. I think Slane lost the magic of being for big rock acts when they gave a headline slot to Harry Styles.

I fucking love Fontaines.... Always said I'd only go back to Slane for AC/DC or Oasis but it looks like I'm full of shite..  This is a very un-metal post but such is life....  8)

Cannot stand them, really overrated. Hats off an all though, nice to see an Irish act headline there. Wouldn't even go though out of curiosity the place will be rammed with absolute shitehawks.

Romance is a decent album but I can see why people dislike them. They come across a bit pretensious.
Oasis leaked tour dates have Slane down for Saturday 4th September.

Dunno, I'm an old fart and seeing as album sales are less of a 'thing' now, I've no idea how to gauge how big a band are these days. But I'd have assumed Fontaines are hugely popular either way, and I don't think them headlining Slane is surprising. A cursory look over previous acts shows plenty of absolute scutter. Thousands will flock to Slane for 'the craic' much in the same way they go to the likes of Electric Picnic to stand in the rain for three days, wearing GAA jerseys, take coke, drink shit beer and listen to the absolute worst music. I would have thought Kneecap would make more sense as a support.

Neither here nor there, but that lead singer is an unbearable cunt so it's entirely apt that they're considered the spiritual heirs to the U2 throne.

I watched an interview with the singer years ago and he tried to present himself as an enigmatic poet but just came off as a wolly. It was so bad I haven't been able to listen to the band since, and they weren't that bad. Maybe I need to give them another chance because they seem to be doing well.

I actually saw a few clips on twitter of their Electric Picnic set and some ppeople saying despite the big crowd there was only a reaction for one of two singles and the usual 'i like all kinds of music' people in GAA jerseys had the phones straight out to record. They are the people who will ensure Slane sells out.

Nice to see a relatively young band headline Slane, probably will sell out with the line up; also the Slane factor alone. I started out in BIMM around the time they released their first few singles, seem to be a snidey attitude towards them here at the time. Feel the UK press may have even been more positive to them, if I remember correctly. Anyway good to see them having a real moment
