Heading to Norway in a few weeks with the other half, Oslo and Bergen, but only really thinking now of Metal places to visit (it's not the main reason for the visit).
Have any of you been and what are some Black Metal locations that are worth visiting? Metal bar recommendations would also be appreciated.
Some stupid questions, I assume Helvete is a must, but do you have to ask to go to the basement, etc.?
Also, I assume wearing a Burzum tshirt is a no-no? Or is it?
Well you can't go to Helvet cos it's closed :laugh: Neseblod is what you mean and no you don't have to ask to go to the basement, they're well used to the fact that's why people are there. Kniven and Vaterland are the Oslo metal bars I think, didn't get to go when I was there however as the daughter wasn't quite drinking age yet. there was also another pretty good metal record shop in the city centre called Katakomben that was sightly cheaper than neseblod. More importantly, there was a donut shop just across from it that was delicious.
There was a very cool black metal exhibition in the National Library in Oslo (I think), and it was free in, check if it's still on. In Bergen, I was there to play a gig at a fest and didn't get to see a huge amount beyond Garage bar which is an old death/black metal venue, but to be honest given I was going to be surrounded by drunk metallers all weekend I kinda tried to keep the sightseeing and wandering as non metal as possible. Don't centre your trip on metal stuff alone, there's a lot to see.

Been meaning to hit Norway myself. I've been working near the border a couple of times, so must make the jump over...
Have a camper, so will bring all our food and drinks with us, coz Norway is that bit more pricy...

Bergen is a stunning city. Been twice once in endless pouring rain and I loved it both times. Oslo is a kip. Felt very rough, especially when the sun stared to go down. Junkies and prostitutes everywhere. Plenty to see there, I'm sure, but just a bit of a shithole, especially compared to Bergen.
In Bergen you should drop in to Apollon bar for an hour or two if you like craft beer. It doubles as a record store and has some metal in it. Beer was great the couple of times I was there.
Fantoft church is only a short train ride out of bergen as well if you want to visit a bit of BM related history.
And wear a fucking Burzum tshirt. No shame in it!

Interesting, I suppose as I say myself and the hellspawn weren't exactly out on the lash in the city centre, but we definitely walked around it in the evening and I didn't notice a huge amount of that. Definitely not the prettiest city centre I've been in by ay means but didn't strike me as especially rough or tense the way that Dublin does. or other places I've been (hello Vienna). Perhaps if I'd been wandering round late at night I'd have noticed it more. Might have been the part we were staying in was a little calmer (can't remember the name of the area, a few stops on the tram from the city centre, struck me as a studenty area) as obviously that figures in to things when you're travelling with your kid.
I'd go back, but I'd definitely much rather go back to Bergen or see some of the other cities. Big fan of that part of the world generally.

Not like massively so but there was something a little uneasy about parts of it for sure. I was sitting outside a relatively quiet pub one evening talking to someone and some skinhead guy started on one of the other people stting outside and then the bouncer.Person I was talking to was like "yeah, stuff like that happens all the time around here"
Turin was far dodgier and that was in the daytime,haha

Yeah, just checked, it was 2016 when we were in Vienna. A lot has changed around Europe, especially in the last 6 years or so I suppose. Every city has a certain edge to it nowadays I guess...
We visited Vienna at a good time no doubt...
Not to completely hijack the thread but we don't have a general travel one-any metal/punk/noise spots of interest to check in Prague? And yes, I am planning a trip to Kutna Hora.
Bergen-the record/beer shop mentioned was cool, can't remember the name but it was just up the road from Garage. This thread has me googling flights to Norway at work :laugh:

There was a great local type non touristy restaurant serving reindeer in Bergen. Its a lovely city especially down near the water.
Kutna Hora was a handy drive out from Prague, its a surreal place, the bone chandeliers....
If you are in Oslo the Emanuel Vigeland frescos are something to see
