Does anyone remember this band from Cork. They had one full length release. I have not listened to them in years but for some reason the MI thread made me think of them, so I think I will give it a listen tonight. Did the members go on to form other bands over the years?
I do, don't remember them being very good. I was at their album launch in Dublin and can't remember a thing about their set, but can remember Sinister Demise supporting who were spot on.
Seen them a few years later then supporting Entombed.
I did pick up the album I'm curious myself now, might dig it out and give it a listen. Maybe it wasn't to my tastes at the time.
Oh the other thing I recall think the last thing I heard of them was they got the big Slayer support slot in the Marquee in cork?
The name rings a bell but that's all. There might have been a demo around the house back in the day.
Thought I remembered them then realised I was thinking of Karnayna
Dawn of a New Dark Age? Remember it being fairly run of the mill.
I remember a cover of South of Heaven they did on some thrash tribute album, that was pretty meaty sounding.
I gave them a blast recently (within the last few years, that is) out of curiosity. I remembered not being into them at the time but thinking my tastes have changed so much that they might be more to my liking now. They made no real impression I must say. Just ordinary death metal I think.
They played the Slayer show in Cork and they had a tough time.
There was an issue with the PA so the only sound we could hear out front was their monitor mix.
They were always good live.
They ended up with 3 guitarists at one point.
I think the main man Mick is a photographer now.
I must dig out the cd.
As a young teen growing up in Cork in the early 00s, they were our Morbid Angel.
I met Mick at a gig last year and I think he still wants to do something with the band, hope he does.
They were called Renewal before CR. Have an album under that name, too. Think I might have an early promo CD of the 'Dawn...' album under the Renewal name somewhere but could be dreaming that up.
They released an EP a few years later as well... Vercingetorix it was called.
Ian O'Sullivan was with them, too.
He had a blues rock trio called Mockingbird.
Had a band called Hallowed that he continued on his own for a while. And an instrumental project called Ianos.
But he eventually joined God's Army from Germany. They have a few decent albums to their name.
And more recently another band called Ravenstine.
I only met Mick and Ian a few weeks back, they were always a solid live band.A time and place band in Cork in the very early 2000s.Some great nights upstairs in Freds with the circle of Cork bands at the time,CR,Mabus,Belarus,Flatline etc; good memories.
They were still Renewal in 2001, must have been the following year they switched to Carnun Rising.
There were some brilliant nights back then.
Lots of buckfast and cider between Fredz, The Cruiscin, The Phoenix, The Wolfhound etc..
Have it on here, some good riffs on it here and there but overall it's a cumbersome listen. It's reminding me of the first Primal Dawn CD and maybe like those they could've pushed on with a bit of experience. In Primal Dawn's case you'd never think it was the same band on Euthanasia or Zealot.
Zealot was a huge step up for Primal Dawn. Could still maybe have been trimmed here and there for extra surgical execution, but most enjoyable all the same. Pity they fizzled out.
PD were a good band!, great live too!.Is Paddy knocking around the scene anymore?.
No Idea - Think Jay is the only one doing anything Music wise, Bump into John Mcgee randomly every once and a while. He was in Legion of Wolves for a while but there wasn't the same bang off that.
Saw Primal Dawn many moons ago in Sligo with Waylander. Mate of mine was doing a bit of promotion... except he forgot to fucking promote the gig. Doubly so that it was in a venue a few miles out of town, effectively in the sticks
Got my glasses broke in the pit, and have whatever CD PD were flogging at the time (I know "The Cull" is on it, and I'm all for the filthy bass tone).
Good times :abbath:
