I recently bought the two CD reissues of this Polish band's mid 90s demos and they really hit the spot for me. Simple beyond belief, maybe a step or two above my-first-riff level stuff, zero production values, raw as shit with shrieking Varg-esque vocals- musically like a retarded Burzum or Forgotten Woods. I mean, on the surface of it it's nothing to get too worked up about, but they just fucking nail it. The vibe is perfectly right and the riffs, though very very basic, do enough to transmit atmosphere.
Anyone else into them? With the cold dark mid- winter on us down here they are perfectly hitting the spot.
Do you have a link to their stuff or is physical only?

It's great stuff got the LPs myself a while back.
There it is.
Mick, on the LP version are there song titles included? There are none on the CDs :o
I only listened to a small bit last night after work.
I heard bits of Slayer and Motörhead in it. I'll have to listen to the whole thing for the Burzum reference.

No it just says stuff like tracks 1 - 2 Promo 94, Tracks 3 - 5 promo 94 etc. The song titles are up on the bands metal archives page.

Yeah I know, but it seems odd not to include them on the physical release. Seems like the most basic piece of information that you actually would include.

Probably down to the label that released it Hellfire. He comes across as lazy from even just trying to order direct to the way the releases are done. I have the 1st pressing of The Black Ravens Flew Again he did on vinyl and it doesn't even come with a lyrics insert. Then last year he repressed it and of course included the lyrics this time which is really annoying.

I have the original Black Ravens... LP from Nykta Records and it's completely magic with no insert and no lyrics. The other two Veles reissues I picked up recently have inserts with lyrics and, ahem, lovely band statements. Might on the Bare Mountain is a savage album. Black Ravens is cool too. Black Hateful Metal is so fucking raw I'm still not sure what to make of it.

I have the Goatowarex versions myself of the other two which are well done. They include some of the lyrics but not all of them. He also did the demo on vinyl that comes a load of unreleased material like a rehearsal from 94. Might is my favourite as well. It took me a while to get into Black Hateful because of the production but once you get use to it, it's a great album. I think it's Rob Darken that owns the rights to all the Veles stuff and he has been selling off licences to various labels that want to do represses.
As a bit of trivia unrelated to the music itself, let me recall an anecdote from the Mysteries camp.
One of the band members, operating under stage name "Samoth", wrote a letter to the lads from Emperor, demanding that his namesake from Emperor drops the "ritual name". Emperor's music, apparently, was unworthy of being called "black metal" because of the generous usage of keyboards.
A duel was suggested. A duel involving axes, in order to establish the rightfull heir to the stage moniker. Sadly, the answer from Norway never came.

Haha, brilliant.
You should check out the Veles/Legion split. As far as I remember the Mysteries vocalist was in Legion too. Total raw chaos in the vocals department. My wife rarely makes any comment when she comes in to the room and the BM is on, but that split warranted a "what the fuck are you listening to"

One of my local dealers had that in stock last time I looked but I'm smashed at the minute so it may well be gone when I get to it. But yeah, his vocals are pretty screechy in Mysteries too.
Picked up the CD reissues of the 2 demos a few years back, very raw and primitive indeed.
Listened to this properly yesterday. Some parts are brilliant.
I listened to the Veles stuff as well.
That's really good. The Black Hateful Metal release is intense.
Not something I'd be inclined to go back to.
Are those type of recordings a tape recorder on the corner of the room or how is it done?
It reminds me of am English band called Capel Beulah.
Having said that Capel Beulah sound like they intentionally enemy for that sound whereas Veles ended up with it.

You should try to get the Legion / Darken split instead of the split with Veles. All the Veles split has is the first demo Triumph. Darken is what Legion would eventually become and on that split you get a few different versions of the songs. They only have four songs so it's nice to have the alternative versions.
That's actually a peeve of mine. I hate when there are multiple versions of the same songs on a recording. I get why bands do it, it's a complete documentation, but just give me one demo version and I'm happy. I don't need the ropey rehearsal and live version recorded in someone's boot
