Some gems there alright. Worthy mention for Gates of Ishtar's "Dawn of Flames" which is a blatant rip of of Exciter's "Long Live The Loud." Invasion Records used the image without the band's knowledge or permission. Mind you the musical quality is absolutely brilliant. One of the few bands with a perfect discography, albeit it only stretched to three albums.

Reinventing the steel is so bad, not the worst offender in this thread by any means but such an odd choice for a band that big. It just smacks of budgetary constraints or rushing to meet a deadline. I could certainly have seen it as a Hellyeah cover though.

I was so gutted with Reinventing.. I really was but I went back a couple of years ago and while it's still not great, I've forgiven it somewhat but that's probably just being strung out for new stuff by them.

A lot of these covers I can let go or even like because they have a certain naive charm or youthful Metal cheesiness like the Hallows Eve for example but Reinventing The Steel is a whole other level of awful. Worst thing on the thread no question. Eddies post Riggs are a a pale, nay, cartoonish imitation of the real deal.

Yep, it was in fact, if nothing else, a statement of intent. They were making it clear that they weren't a part of that movement. I listened to it recently, or a few songs anyway, and it's grand. Catchy and fun but it can't stand up beside Cowboys, Vulgar or Far... Beyond Driven (you just can't successfully abbreviate that one, can you :laugh: )

One I thought was shit when I was a younglad was Abaddon Incarnates Last Supper - I remember seeing it in Terrorizer and thought the album must be terrible if the artwork is that bad. All that changed once I seen them live, now I think the artwork is glorious, totally in harmony with the chaotic material contained within.

There was a bootleg LP released a year or two ago with the original artwork. Looks great and sounds great and came with a cool poster. Worth picking up.

Same here, where's did that spring from? Looks someone photoshopped Jim Carey onto it. Thrash Wall certainly gets a reprieve.. The Illusions cover is beyond bonkers but they may as well have stuck with it than just stick the band on the cover when they rereleased it as Chemical Exposure.
That Adema one with the giants was utterly abysmal.
Can't remember what it's called, but there's one with a close up of penetration, covered only by an upside down cross that has got to be one of the worst as well.
Also this one by Priest which isn't even funny awful, just genuinely awful...
I love pencil drawn album covers. A best album covers thread could be made up almost entirely of thrash albums!

There's one thing I like about Five Finger Death Punch: the fact that "fdp" in French stands for "fils de pute"/son of a whore, so every time I see the abbreviated form of their name, the aul noggin goes "cinq fils de pute!" :laugh:

I reckon that's a brilliant cover! It's how the logo is rendered on top is what I find offensive, too many album covers killed with digital logos hovering over a painted/drawn cover.
Patchett's covers are usually great, I'm a big fan of the Forest Of Equilibrium and The Ethereal Mirror covers. We won't mention Dance Of Death.
In fairness his original mockup was a lot better than the abomination they released. I think it has potential if it has of been painted.

Also with regards to the DoD cover, Patchett presented a digital mock up to the Maiden camp intending to then do it for the album as a proper painting. But for reasons that remain a mystery, the band decided to go with the mock up.
About 20 years ago I went round to Patchett's place a couple of times; he gave me one of his paintings that hadn't been finished and had been in his shed for ages. Even though it's a work in progress it's still pretty cool to have.

Not an image, but an artist as I stick on Nevermore's "This Godless Endeavour" - Hugh Syme. Gawd, I fucking hate every cover he's been involved in (bar the colouration of "Youthanasia"), which as a massive Rush fan, sucks.
In not a fan of Patchett's style but I do like the Forest of Equilibrium cover mostly because of the savage music contained within.

I think I just looked up his website and he had his contact details there so I gave him a ring. This was in 2007 though.
Turns out he lived not that far away from me so went down to visit him a couple of times. He showed me what he was working on, his portfolio of work etc.
I'll try and dig the painting out and photo it if I can work out how to post images on here, might take a while though.

I could never take to them. I bought Cause Of Death, War Master and Mental Funeral on the same day. Played them all on the walkman on the train home.
