Title: Thin Lizzy covers of note
Post by: Kollin on May 23, 2025, 09:26:30 AM
The mentions of Whiskey in the Jar on the Metallica Aviva thread got me thinking about the amount of Thin Lizzy covers out there.

Any good ones stand out to you?

I see that Guns N'Roses have started doing 'Thunder and Lightning' in their set with Duff singing:

Saw that the other day, surprised at the song choice but Duff's vocals are poor tbf.

Megadeth's version of Cold Sweat and Mastodon's Emerald come to mind.
As does Iron Maiden's Massacre.

The Mastodon is probably the only decent one I can think of, it's class.

As bad as the Metallica one is, the Bon Jovi cover of The Boys Are Back In Town from the Navy Seals soundtrack is the bigger crime against humanity.

I know it's Moore featuring Phil, but I always enjoyed Primal Fear's cover of "Out In The Fields".

People here will disagree but Skyclad's version of Emerald is very good.

Skyclad do a cool cover of Emerald and if you include Gary Moore Thyrfing do a cool version of Over the hills and far away.

I've always enjoyed Metallica's version of Whiskey.

Paul Gilbert did a good cover of Cowboy Song when he played the Button Factory in 2008. From what I remember he hadn't rehearsed it, just started playing some Lizzy riffs and then decided to give it a lash. I very clearly remember his face at the end of the song when he turned to his bandmates with a "holy shit we actually got away with winging it!" kind of head on him.

Just had a look on Youtube, some of it is on there but not the whole song. Never knew it was on there, brought me right back 17 years! Vocals not bad at all.

I saw the Supersuckers a couple of times in Dublin and they were always good for a Lizzy tune well played. I think it was in Whelans they played three Lizzy songs in a row, huge fans.

Ha, I got savaged on here for saying it was  better than the original, (heading for the bunker again).

Rollins Band (Mother Superior era) did a wicked version "Are You Ready?" live.

It's on the "The Only Way To Know For Sure" live album.

There's a studio version with Scott Gorham too on the bonus tracks of the Rollins Band "Nice" record.

.
Henry did it with Sykes and the lads at the vibe for Philo.

Andy Cairns did Bad Reputation at the same one.
