We all love list threads, however while listening to Mental Vortex by Coroner I find myself thinking "Yeah, I will never get tired of any of this, it's everything I need."
So pick one. Just one. Pick one album you know every second will always hit the spot.
Fuck your top 5. Wimps!
Predictable as shit for me here - Death - "Human".
Good shout.
Live After Death. Perfection.
Quote from: Ducky on April 09, 2025, 08:40:13 PMPredictable as shit for me here - Death - "Human".
It's not a bad one, to be fair.
Strapping Young Lad - Alien
I might just go stick it on now
Possibly an obvious one but for me it's Ride The Lightning.
Covers all bases, fast, slow and heavy, ballad, instrumental. All quality.
Paradise Lost - Draconian Times
Quote from: The Great Cull on April 09, 2025, 08:52:59 PMPossibly an obvious one but for me it's Ride The Lightning.

Finally, someone else rates Escape. Good man, another good shout.
This isn't fair at all.
But the answer is Devin Townsend - "Terria"
Today, anyway
Faith No More:Angel Dust.
No skips on that one at all.
Turn Loose the Swans. It covers a lot of ground.
Defenders Of The Faith.
Halford is on another level on this album.
Quote from: Eoin McLove on April 09, 2025, 09:25:44 PMTurn Loose the Swans. It covers a lot of ground.
Genuinely the only MDB album I don't like. Of course. If I had to pick 'just one' MDB album it'd be The Angel And The Dark River.
It has to be October Rust for me. Although I'm beginning to doubt myself and maybe it should be the Downward Spiral.
Nope, I'll stick to my guns. October Rust it is.
Operation: Mindcrime

Oh yes.
Couldn't do just one - all of them listed so far I'd never get tired of. Isn't metal great?
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
If you'd asked me 20 years ago I would have said Reign in Blood, but I've come to appreciate Unquestionable Presence more over the years. It's mind-boggling how much they fit into just over 32 minutes. Flawless album.

I'll second that
My Top 5:

Mr. Bungle "Disco Volante"
Dark Tranquility The Gallery, it has everything I like about metal.

You lost :P
Still thinking about mine. Some picks above I could agree with, others I'd be more likely to pick different albums by same band (Painkiller rather than Defenders, MoP rather than RtL, ITP rather than Human). Also I'm tempted to say Rust In Peace just in reaction to nonsense being spouted in another thread
Manowar - Into Glory Ride

100% would have MoP and Painkiller instead. Keeping Human, mind :abbath:
Carcass - Heartwork
Therapy? - Babyteeth. Nothing else sounds like it.
Right this minute?
Death - Symbolic
Quote from: Putrefaction on April 10, 2025, 01:29:56 PMTherapy? - Babyteeth. Nothing else sounds like it.
Nice, but I'd go for Nurse over it for the same reason.
AC/DC - If you want blood
GN'R - "Appetite For Destruction"
About 7 songs each from Use Your Illusion albums. So, still one album...
But if you're being strict, I couldn't in a million years decide.
Maybe Master of Reality. But I've had an ale.
Live After Death
Alternatively, Powerslave if live albums aren't allowed. I don't think I would want to live a life without The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Cowboys From Hell. Bit of an eyeroll choice, and there are certainly other metal albums I like a little better, but guitar playing is very important to me and if I can only have one album it has to be the one with the guitar playing I like best.

No eyeroll if it's still giving ya a buzz anytime ya lash it on the turntable!
Vinterland: Welcome My Last Chapter. Almost thirty years on and it still sounds as amazing as it did in 1996. The zenith of melodic Swedish black metal. Not easy to better SOTLB but Vinterland did just that.
Rust in Peace
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors for me.
After way too much thought, I've landed on something pretty obvious:
Mastodon - Leviathan
Quote from: stearl on April 10, 2025, 11:02:55 PMArcturus - The Sham Mirrors for me.
Nice.
It's impossible to pick a single album and I could change my mind a hundred times on it. It's funny how it eats at you... have I made the right decision??? Wait... who cares
I was trying to think of it in a desert island disc kind of way: what metal album could I get most mileage out of if I had to choose just one.
Exactly, but there is a part of the mind that feels like making a call on it one way or another is somehow definitive.
Imagine hearing a knock on the door and when you open it there an armed guard standing there.
-Right cunt, grab your CD, it's off to the desert island with you.
- Wait no, I change my mind. I want Dookie... no Nurse... no wait, Stormcrowfleet........
- Sorry son, your decision is final. It's there for all to see on the Metal Warfare forum. Now move it.
Sickening to get there and there's no fuckin CD player
Other ones that came to mind didn't cover enough bases to pass a "this and only this til you die" test: King Diamond - Conspiracy, a perfect album but lacks in the extreme dimension; Morbid Angel - Covenant, Atheist - Unquestionable Presence, Tribulation - Formulas, etc., all perfect too imo, yet lack in melodic vocal lines, and so on. That was my thinking on it anyway.
I was thinking Opeth/My Dying Bride/Paradise Lost where you get a bit of everything on the one CD but I just cannot and will not commit to one!
But the correct answer is...if you are on your own on a desert island - The Dreadful Hours by MDB.

Metallica- Master of Puppets
Griftegård – Solemn • Sacred • Severe
Quote from: londonleatherboy on April 10, 2025, 10:40:27 AMManowar - Into Glory Ride
I love Manowar but strangely I can't get into this one at all, would be last on my list of the 80s stuff.
Mine is probably Seventh Son, I could pick other albums I think I'll never get sick of but this one has been the most consistent in my life since I started listening to metal.
If you're going to a desert island then bring Beloved Antichrist by Therion. It's a 3 hour rock opera that will fulfil all your metal and sexual needs.
Quote from: 91/30 on April 11, 2025, 12:19:22 PMGriftegård – Solemn • Sacred • Severe
I struggled to choose between this and Draconian Times.
Mindfunk - Dropped
Act III.
Are you allowed visit other people's islands for a visit and temporary trade at least??
Sorry the thread seems to have veered towards a desert island selection of one. But the thread simply says pick one, so
Sepultura "Beneath the Remains"
...with Deicide s/t recorded on the B side of a 90minute tape ;)

Until it gets chewed up. :-X
Always the glass half empty with you! That's the one thing I'm grabbing anyway... or an MP3 stick of tunes ;)

This is a great choice. Along similar lines, the most recently released album I thought about choosing is Black Medium Current.

And funnily enough, it's the only Arcturus album that really gels for me, I could give or take the rest of them.
Just to add, Black Medium Current is a class bit of work too.

Is it one you listen to frequently though? Leviathan certainly covers all the bases, but it doesn't have as much replay value for me, whereas something a little more one dimensional like AC/DC I've listened to and could listen to a million times more. Was Leviathan the sweet spot for you of huge replayability coupled with diversity?
In my case, yeah, that about nails it: Leviathan is hands-down one of my most ever listened to metal albums. I love me "one-dimensional" stuff, as you put it, but personally that's my snacks whereas the prog end of things is my meat and deconstructed potatoes.
If your meat isn't deconstructed too can we deduce that you have no sausage?
Exactly. Instead, I have an entire pork joint, including crackling, honey-glaze, the works, all tied up with string, for her pleasure.
A spit roast for all.
Amorphis - Tales from the Thousand Lakes
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
On loop all day, no bother.
I'm regretting my seventh son choice
Demanufacture by Fear Factory. They nailed it on this album. I'm surprised nobody else mentioned it.
Ah I just after seeing everyone's choices I reckon I should have picked something I love but know slightly less inside out and maybe a little longer 😅
Let's face it, it's not possible to pick one album and I knew early on I wasn't going to break my brain over it.
De mysterious dom sathanas.
Edge Of Sanity - Crimson 2
