Decibel just posted their top 40. No major surprises as it was always gonna come down to those two!
Oranssi Pazuzu at 38? Madness, AOTY for me
The only one I own is Invincible Shield, fuck me how times have changed...
Crypt Sermon record is excellent. Was surprised at Gatecreeper's lastest being rated so high. It's decent but kinda boring and I didn't go back to it.
I've heard about 6 albums on that list.
Yeah that Gatecreeper album did nothing for me.
I've said it before and I'll say it again this song would ruin any album:
https://youtu.be/VnCNjVibmUc?si=JS1Tvo7955roco-_
Absolute dogshit.
Adversarial, Mitochondrion and Wrathprayer are top 3 at the moment. BI is obviously good as well.
How can they be putting out end of year lists when (like them or not )there's a major player like Opeth to come. Ridiculously premature.
Oh hang on, they have it, must be out over there.
Still, leave it to December at least.
Crypt Sermon won't even be in my Top Twenty. Clearly they're the darlings of the U.S.
I've heard two of the albums on that list. I guess I'm just out of the loop
Same: Judas Priest and Blood Incantation.
Looking through what I bought this year and overall not a great year but not the worst either. No major standout albums Best for me has been Akhlys, Inquisition, 3 new Reverorum Ib Malachts, Triumph Genus, Horna, Sabbat, Crucifier and Death Like Mass.
Blood Incantation is good but in my opinion it's the most overrated DM album since the Wrathprayer debut.
I still need to checkout the new Wrathprayer, Paysage, Blackdeath and Barathrum. I would be surprised if the Blackdeath and Paysage LPs don't end up on my end of year list.
Must go through that list and catch up on a few. Also must see what I listened to this year that was actually released this year
All I have off that list is Anciients and Nails. I know fuck all of the others on there
In no particular order:
Uniform - American Standard
Eye Flys - s/t
Couch Slut - You Could Do It Tonight
Berthold City - Where Did We Go Wrong?
Bat - Under the Crooked Claw
Shellac - To All Trains
Guiltless - Thorns
Sympathy Pain - Swandive
Iron Monkey - Spleen & Gold
X - Smoke and Fiction
Wasted Death - Season Of Evil
Einstürzende Neubauten – Rampen APM: Alien Pop Music
The Jesus Lizard - Rack
Machiavellian Art – Population Control
Crawl Space – My God... What've I Done?
Midnight - Hellish Expectations
High Vis - Guided Tour
The Obsessed - Guilded Sorrow
USA Nails - Feel Worse
The The - Ensoulment
Hello Mary – Emita Ox
Nails - Every Bridge Burning
Geisha - Don't Dead
Heriot – Devoured By The Mouth Of Hell
Deathfiend – Dark Rising
Bad Breeding - Contempt
Chat Pile - Cool World
Blood Incantation – Absolute Elsewhere
High On Fire – Cometh The Storm
Planet On A Chain – Culture Of Death
Couch Slut
Is that a slut that spends ages riding people on a couch or someone who sleeps on lots of couches but never settles on one?
Wasn't sold on Glacial Tomb, Anciients, Chat Pile or The Black Dahlia. I was very disappointed with Necrot.
Gatecreeper was just a disposable album written by Fred Estby so very strange and worthless in my view. That's a Stock Aiken and Waterman approach in getting someone else to write all your music and is devoid of artistic merit.
Well into Dödsrit, Terminal Nation, and Tribulation, while Ripped to Shreds floats my boat as usual and even exceeded what they've done previously so delighted with that.
I need to properly check out the Blood Incantation, Deceased, Undeath, Ulcerate and Oxygen Destroyer albums actually. 200 Stab Wounds new stuff was class live in Limerick so I need to check that out also.
Not on that list...
Replicant would be one of my favourites. It came out the same day as Necrot and absolutely blew it away so I never really bothered with my Necrot purchase after that.
Skeletal Remains, Iotunn, Officium Triste and Sorgelig would be in there for me.
Really enjoyed Necrophobic and Nile.
I never got around to revisiting Unto Others after hearing the early singles and not being overly impressed - maybe I need to revisit it.
Kanonenfieber would be up there.
New Veilburner and Kreulty on the way and they're always up my street. Early Veilburner tracks are sick.
Been some amazing stuff for me so far this year. :abbath:
Keohane was raving about the new Gaerea also now that I think about it. I'll have to spend time with that one yet.
I haven't listened to the new Crypt Sermon at all despite being a big fan of the last two. Looks like I'd be well advised to rectify that!
My top twenty is currently still at the top 40 stage, torturous times ahead but I'm currently sitting with a top 5 of Blood Incantation, Sovereign, Critical Defiance, Judas Priest and Civerous.
Have 8 of those, the top 5, Lucifer, Darkthrone and Anciients. Blood Incantation and Spectral Wounds will make my Top 5 but unless something amazing pops up, The Wizards "The Exit Garden" will be my favourite album of the year.
Quote from: Snare on November 12, 2024, 08:09:20 PMKeohane was raving about the new Gaerea also now that I think about it. I'll have to spend time with that one yet.
Youd want to be Raving mad to listen to them!
Limbo was mighty, didn't think too much of the last one. I have Coma lined up, when I get to it is another thing.
As has been the way the last few years, I've picked up very little new stuff, mostly older things. What springs to mind are
High on Fire
Gjendød
Törnen
The Cure
Possibly a few others that are slipping my mind.
Saxon
Judas Priest
Two good albums indeed, two bands keeping the old flame burning.
Quote from: Black Shepherd Carnage on November 12, 2024, 08:19:02 PMI haven't listened to the new Crypt Sermon at all despite being a big fan of the last two. Looks like I'd be well advised to rectify that!
Requiem Metal Podcast did a great episode on it too. Well worth checking out.
And new Distant Dream about to drop. I expect nothing but greatness.
Unaussprechlichen Kulten, Abhorration, Priest.
Just started listening to new Obnoxious Youth yesterday too and could end up being up there.
Blood Incantaion very good too but initial effect wearing off already.
Witch Vomit is up there this year for me!,great release.
Skelthal
The Crown
Hyperdontia
All very good too!
I'm a Blood incantation fan boy so thats album of the year for me!.
Definitely haven't listened to 40 new albums this year. Here's my top 5:
Sørgelig - Φθορά
Departure Chandelier - Satan Soldier Of Fortune
Unholy Craft - Saa Mørkt, Saa Mektig
Judas Priest - Invincible Shield
Pestilength - Solar Clorex
Quote from: Snare on November 12, 2024, 08:09:20 PMKeohane was raving about the new Gaerea also now that I think about it. I'll have to spend time with that one yet.
 Yeah, himself, myself and Richie had a listening party after it got released. Mad about them so we are.
Chat Pile and The Cure for me so far. I'll have to consult with Ochoill to see what other shit I was raving about and what year it was released
Quote from: Snare on November 12, 2024, 08:04:51 PMNot on that list...

Replicant are class, their previous album has been a real repeater for me as well
Would agree it's been a generally strong year, for my tastes anyway.
The Thou album is another that's been on constantly. Cannot get enough of the horrific clanking bass in this track, that sliding chorus thing as well, vicious
Nearly forgot, new Inter Arma was a mad yoke too. Should be of interest for anyone who likes that dissonant sound.

It definitely is and I had a lengthy chat with him about it in Pharmacia in the summer, whether he remembers that bit or not lol :abbath:
Liked all the previous Inter Arma albums but that new one didn't work for me.
Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown is one for the non-metal.

I am fairly sure it involved you seeing it in full live at Roadburn only weeks previous to Monkfest lol. I don't remember much of that night... But yes it is class, prefer the previous two (ignoring the covers album) over everything else they have done but this one is still great.

Picking up the phone like your man in Back to the Future. "Hey you know that new dissonant sound you were looking for?" And holding the phone out into cavernous wailing
- Ancients - Beyond the Reach of the Sun
Just another great album from them, haven't put a foot wrong yet
- Devin Townsend - Powernerd
Best thing he's done in 10 years
- Moss Upon the Skull - Quest for Fire
This is only out about a week but I've had it on constantly
- Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere
Nothing else to add that hasn't already been said, stunning piece of work
- Dissimulator - Lower Form Resistance
Great death thrash stuff
- Ihsahn - Ihsahn
Seemed a bit overlooked I think, some of the orchestral parts felt a little shoehorned in, but I still find myself coming back to it a lot
Seemed a pretty lean year for trad/thrash metal though? Unless there's just a rake of stuff I've missed?
Definitely have the Dissimulator on my radar, good shout, check out the Critical Defiance for some serious thrash. The Flotsam and Jetsam too.
What, is that true about gatecreeper?!
Off the top of me head - Blood Incantation, High On Fire, Hyperdontia, Noxis, Apogean, Skeletal Remains, Exocrine, Necrophobic, Spectral Voice.

Fred is noted as the songwriter, but I see now on the next paragraph that their singer Chase Mason is also. I don't have the album to check the split between them, but that opening paragraph about Fred Estby being the songwriter is what I recalled and it was certainly reinforced from listening at the time.
Whoever wrote it it was the biggest mistake of the year for me purchasing it, anyone want it for Xmas?

Ah they fucking suck either way, I need them and Frozen Soul to FOAD already.
Blood Incantation
Crypt Sermon
High on Fire
Adorior
Early Moods
Ulcerate
Some stuff I've completely forgot to check out properly yet like Inter Arma, Dodsrit, Tribulation, Oranssi Pazuzu etc. Gave Anciiients a go after seeing the praise on here, should be right up my street but didn't do it for me, remember thinking the singer sounded too much like Jerry Cantrell, I'll give it another go though. The Priest album was fairly underwhelming compared to Firepower imo. Gave Unto Others a shot as well and didn't like it as much as maybe I was hoping I would, they're playing in a few months so I'll check them out again.
Also looking forward to the new Opeth.
The Adorior is deadly alright
Bit silly the Opeth making it into the list when nobody had a chance to hear it.
Hopefully it's decent
Just listened to snippets of the recent and previous Gatecreeper. That's awful music.
I don't mind the previous stuff, but couldn't listen to the newest one.

It must be out in the U.S. already, or they have promos.
Or they're judging it on the singles on youtube
Black Sabbath- Tyr 8)
The Cure is AOTY for me, must check put new Tribulation actually, I didn't know it dropped

Not surprising sure it's Decibel basically this generations metal hammer. A lot of great albums that came out this year aren't even on the list and most like nobody at Decibel is even aware of them. Sure didn't Decibel try to go after Hells Headbangers a few years ago because they were upset over some of the albums they had in the webstore and now they refuse to do any advertising for them.
My "album I really should've known before but better late than never I suppose" award goes to Portrait - "Crossroads".
'The Host' ?

Yeah some of Allan Holdsworth's material is my favourite music ever recorded, and all I own physically is his "Against The Clock" best of that I bought nineteen years ago. Whoops

The Host is a banger too. Have "Sound The Horn" on right now :abbath:
Good tune. I find it wears on a bit as an album though
I think Host is just a track too long, though I love the last song.
Blood Incantation
Alarum
The new Bedsore will be out in a week or two, so that will probably be up there as well.

Witch Vomit -Funeral Sanctum, give it a whirl if you haven't heard it.
Definitely up there with Death metal album of the year for me!
Jesus, so many this year, definitely after a few years of metal being kind of in the background for me it definitely came to the fore again this year. I feel like one or two of these might be late 23 but fuck it:
Drowned - Procul His
Civerous - Maze Envy
Vircolac - Veneration
Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere
Reverorum Ib Malacht - Martyrium Matrimoni / Malakt Amalka Maryam
Flail - Within The Firths of Futility
Nahtrunar - Hrima
Apparition - Disgraced Emanations
Mitochondrion - Vitriseptome
Abhorration - Demonolatry
Honorable mentions to Mamaleek , Slowhole and Basque, none of which are strictly metal per se but all of which were excellent
Probably a load I'm forgetting, Aluk Todolo and Oranssi Pazuzu and Furze will be once I get more than one listen to each I'd say, and even though I haven't heard it yet the Mefitis is bound to be on there. Fake Dust and Degenerate Synapse demo/promo things were grind of the year for me ,both lethal.
Spectral Voice was the disappointment of the year. Underwhelming. Absolute lol at the Gatecreeper discussion, cos they've always been insufferable awful bullshit, even when they were on a hardcore label. Fair bit of "yeah this is grand but uts not amazing" this year as well (Thou ,Inter arma, Chat Pile, Full of Hell were all solid but haven't held my interest bar a song or two)

Guess I'm in for an interesting three hours or so: just pressed play on the first of Revororum's 2024 triple release.
All I've been listening to is the Chat Pile one really. I can't seem to get sick of it at all. Looking at the lists here is making me realise I don't really listen to new things at all for the most part. 3/4 of the stuff mentioned here I haven't even heard of

You sure are. The 3rd one didn't do much for me
Unaussprechlin Kulten - Haxan Saboth is one not mentioned here. Haven't spun in myself in a while, but the first 6 months of the year it was on heavy rotation.
Good call. Must go back and give the Coffin Storm a second chance too. Found the album a disappointment after the promising single, but maybe worth a second shot.
Same here, it didn't do much for me but I'll go back to it
I like Crypt Sermon who are these guys?

Is it not the 1st one you don't have on your list up there? It's all a little confusing, but from metal archive I gathered that the 31st October release 'Svartsjuka och magi' was the 1st. In the end I only got around to that and 'Martyrium Matrimonii: Sacrificium Christi' yesterday, that was pretty damn good alright. Will put on what I think is the 3rd one today!
I've no idea what order they came out in,but yeah "Svartsjuka" didn't grab me as much as the other 2
Ah cool, you just meant the 3rd as in the 'other'. Yeah, it certainly wasn't anywhere near the Martyrium one. Which I was happy to be able to hear elements of Dolorian in, now that I know their stuff thanks to you! :abbath:
Jesus, if I'd know I had this level of influence between Thorns' Vemod comment (not sure that was me?hated it at first butbhave grown to love it) I'd be directing everyone to listen to the Magus ep so word spreadsheet and it gets reissued
All 3 RIM albums came out at the same time.
Metal archives has them listed as released 31st October, then 1st and 2nd November respectively. Maybe that's mystique fabrication though!
I ordered all 3 from Iron Bonehead on October 24th and they had already been up on the bandcamp a while before that.
Grand, but even on their bandcamp Malakt is the most recent and Svarsjuka the "first" of the three, so I'm guessing they did have an at least implicit release- and listening-order in mind.
I think he reuploaded those with the current artwork because when I first saw them a few weeks ago none of the art used was the same as what has been used on the physical versions.
His bandcamp has always been a mess he has stuff on it under different titles than the physical releases and different artist names.
You can check there for yourself: the albums as they appear on bandcamp seem to match the release order on metal archives, going back before the latest three like. I'm just (vaguely) interested in whether an order was definitely in mind, and it seems more likely yes than no for the moment.
The dates are suppose to correspond with All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day and All Souls Day so my guess is if you look into each album they will most likely have some underlying theme that links them up to the date he has down as the official release.

The Crown and Blood Incantation by a country mile for me. Two absolute beauties.
The Yoth Iria sounds great too. Chapel Of Disease new one is also stunning. Bruce Dickinson's Mandrake Project is beyond great. I also love the Ghost live album from the film this year, really great. The Schizophrenia re-recording was also great fun to hear.

I haven't picked up too many new releases this year but top of the list for me is Reversed - Wildly Possessed. Deceased - Children of The Morgue a close second.
Had to look up Reversed , an Invictus release eh, missed that completely, must check that out. Hate their moniker already though so not a good start.
The Deceased is the business alright, just reeks METAL :abbath:

Well that Reversed album is some good shit alright, Wildly Possessed would have been a better band name. I'll be having a few more listens of this for sure, it's all good , hard black thrash except that female vocal segment at the end of Hungry Graves which garnered some frownage. I like that song, not the franz one.
Sherlukkit! You must be a 00s hipster time traveler. Some things can't be helped.
In fairness, there are positive elements in that song. The big bass and the electronic/ industrial vibe is pretty cool. But that FF vocal melody is, shall we say, ill advised.
I can live with it though. Especially when you have songs like A Fragile Thing and I Can Never Say Goodbye on it. Magic.
Can hear the melodic and rhythmic similarity with the FF song sure enough, but as an overall choo-win this one is, I'd like to think, clearly much better  And as reminiscent as it may incidentally be to said FF song, it's an awful lot more similar to a whole bag load of Cure songs in a similar style.
Yeah, but it still sounds like fuckin FF!
Ah I don't want to listen to it now with that in my head
FF S
Maybe I'll try pretending it was Fear Factory
I don't hear that at all, thankfully.
Just stick that Couch Slut album on on a whim after seeing it while browsing Bandcamp for stuff I might have missed and ah yeah jaysus this is lethal.

Another list here. I only know one of them so they agree with me on something I suppose
It's still percolating for me but Blood Incantation, Death Like Mass and Spite are up there. I've bought practically nothing this year (one album since January!)
Will hopefully get to finally add those to the collection after Christmas.
I haven't listened to enough stuff that stuck with me this year to make a list but the Gloomy Reflections album has been on pretty heavy rotation for me the last few weeks.

That's one of the ones Ochoill tells me about
It definitely is and I had a lengthy chat with him about it in Pharmacia in the summer, whether he remembers that bit or not lol :abbath:
Just had that one on there. Jaysus tis great. No wonder you were at him about it! All the tunes were decent but Gardens In The Dark is something else altogether.
I guess we're getting a new Teitanblood any minute now (my guess is Xmas day) so let's see how that changes the lists

Yeah just seen that! Been getting back into Death a lot this year so excited for a new one. Was hoping the century album would be out this side of Christmas too but looks like it's been pushed into 2025
No I;d say we'll have it sooner than we think. They generally don't fuck around with the album announcements.
Partholon are up there for album of the year
Quote from: Don Gately on November 15, 2024, 11:59:08 AMThe Cure is AOTY for me, must check put new Tribulation actually, I didn't know it dropped
New Tribulation is cool. Once you get used to the clean vocals it's great, and adds a new dimension to their sound
Looks like a new Revenge album is coming out but they haven't released anything all that great since Scum and live it's just not the same without Helmkamp.

It's definitely a Revenge song anyway  and with that, it's great.

I listened to it earlier just more of the same. Not a patch on what they were releasing when Pete was involved. I had hope with Scum because some of the doomy parts were really good but Read didn't seem to carry that on with any of the releases that came after.
I do really like the cover.
Given the ubiquity of mashups I'm surprised there no Revenge/Father Jack
"drink.feck.girls" tshirt out there
It's up for pre-order now at SOM. Out January 31st.
Borknagar - Fall
Bruce Dickinson - The Mandrake Project
Flotsam & Jetsam - I Am The Weapon
Ironflame - Kingdom Torn Asunder
Judas Priest - Invincible Shield
Lovebites - Lovebites II
Orden Ogan - The Order of Fear
Rage - Afterlifelines
Scanner - The Cosmic Race
The Crown - Crown of Thorns
That's in order? Love the Scanner shout.
Quote from: Thorn on December 04, 2024, 10:25:51 PMThat's in order? Love the Scanner shout.
Alphabetical order, yes.
The mandrake project is a solid album kinda forgot about it
thought it was dreadful...was a big fan of his solo stuff down the years in all
Really? I thought it was very decent myself part from that soppy number towards the end
I'm a major Maiden fan but haven't taken to any of their side projects. In terms of Bruce: Tattooed Millionaire was woeful, I listened to one other - possibly The Chemical Wedding - but didn't think much of it. I don't hear anything of interest in his solo stuff.
The Chemical Wedding is a masterpiece but...each to his own I suppose!
Chemical Wedding, Accident of Birth and Tyrant of Souls are all great. New one has it's moments but not a patch on those three. A few weaker tracks, especially near the end really let it down.
As for the rest Balls to Picasso has a couple of good tracks but the rest is pretty mediocre.
I'd put The Chemical Wedding right at the top of anything he's (and Smith's) ever done with Powerslave and Seventh Son.
Hyperdontia-Harvest of malevolence.
Severe Torture- torn from the jaws of death.
Oxygen destroyer- Guardian of the universe.
Skeletal Remains- Fragments of the ageless.
200 stab wounds- Manual manic procedures.
Replicant-Infinite mortality.
Undeath- More Insane.
Aborted- Vault of horrors.

Have to check out the Replicant one, absolutely love their previous effort
And possibly in order:
Ulver - Liminal Animals
Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere
Defeated Insanity - Chronicles of Lunacy
Judas Priest - Invincible Shield
My Dying Bride - A Mortal Binding
Devin Townsend - Powernerd
Whoa, miffed at myself for missing the new Defeated Sanity. Bounced off the last album, but gonna fire this up for the cold walk home.
It's a beast of a yoke.
It's fecking mighty. I wasn't too gone on their last one, but this one sounds more like their earlier, less techy stuff.
Ya, I didn't give the last one anytime.
Don't think it's been mentioned, and I had in mind it was 2023 but apparently not, so Dionysiaque's Diogonos is definitely in my albums of the year.
Quote from: open face surgery on December 10, 2024, 04:11:04 PMIt's a beast of a yoke.
Got a few listens to it in over the last day (fair play to half-hour-ish albums) and it is indeed a beast.
After about the 50th listen, it's gotta be Blood Incantation.
Can't find a fault with it and always notice something new with each listen!
The last Respire album is very good also

The only way anything could usurp AE is if the parent album has a documentary with a err,
dancing Riedl. And seeing as there's been precisely zero of these outside of the AE making of, AE reigns :abbath:
Forgot to include Dipygus in my albums of the year. Their self-titled is a manky beast of an album that sounds like Autopsy and Impetigo with a few oddball touches to keep things interesting.
Molder- Catastrophic Reconfiguration ,worthy of a mention!

Strong contender for the worst band I've heard not only this year, but this decade thus far. I can't remember the last time a band's music inspired this level of almost physical hatred in me.

Love it
Sixty-three '24 releases whittled down to thirty, chop five of them off, dump five in the honourable mentions, put some sort of order on the others and you can finally get out of this cave and see daylight again. Come on...you can do this...
It's got to be Absolute Elsewhere for me going by the outrageous amount of listens I gave it and the fact I keep returning to it at least once a week.
Necrophobic's In The Twilight Grey and Nile's The Underworld Awaits Us All are very respectable runner-ups.
Overall, it's been an absolutely fantastic year for Metal.
I must be the only person on here that doesn't like Absolute Elsewhere. I enjoyed their other releases, but this one sounds like a Frankenstein's monster of death metal and Dr. Who moog freakouts. There's no flow to the songs, it's just prog bits horsed into death metal tunes.
In what must be the worst year ever for new releases for me, I think only the new Anciients and Nails albums are worth a mention at all.
It's not metal but I do like the new Cure album too. It's been a year of slim pickings though.

Agreed..almost exactly what I said to buddies other night...it's so forced it's laughable . Revisited it after the initial buzz and countless spins died down and it's done nothing for me since
That was my initial reaction, like....c'mon ye can't just shoehorn that in there..but after a few spins it just worked and I found myself looking forward to those WTF moments .
BLACK CURSE - Burning In Celestial Poison

Yeah it was poor enough, there was some ok albums but I struggled to pick out some this year compared to last year.
I thought I'd done this already but anyway...
Album of the year is The Cure: Songs Of A Lost World.
Then, in no particular order:
Blood Incantation: Absolute Elsewhere
Oldd Wvrms: Abysséphale
Coroza: As Within
Gaerea: Coma
High On Fire: Cometh The Storm
Dungeön: s/t
Abyssal: Glacial
The Jesus And Mary Chain: Glasgow Eyes
Akhlys: House Of The Black Geminus
Jerry Cantrell: I Want Blood
Judas Priest: Invincible Shield
Charlene Beretah: Kind Of Savagery
Opeth: The Last Will And Testament
Partholón: The Ocean Pours In
Ivory Primarch: The Portrait
Cavalera: Schizophrenia
Bile Caster: Writhing Between Birth And Death
Just getting this down on paper as I actually have 20 minutes of peace and quiet.
1. The Wizards - Exit Garden
2. Blood Incantation - Absolute Everywhere
3. Coltre - To Watch With Hands...Too Touch With Eyes
4. Spectral Wound - Songs of Blood and Mire
5. Uncle Acid - Nella Ora Blue
The other contenders to round out the top ten would be the albums from Aborration, Darkthrone, Tribulation, Iotunn, Anciients (order not determined).
Stuff I thought was above average and worth checking out and would be fighting it out for the next spots.
They Came From Visions, Udad, Drowned, Stygian Crown, Ecclesia, Coffin Storm, Grand Magus, Hardraw, Friends of Hell, Kontact, Sulphur and Mercury, Nocturnus AD (I know the vocals got shit, but there is a lot to like about thus album), Flamekeeper, Freeways, Wraith, Portrait, Kryptos, Voodoo Kiss, The Spirit, Midnight Force
Stuff I need to listen to more - Armagh, Traveller, Crypt Sermon, The Gates of Slumber, Sig:Ar:Tyr - don't think any would be in my top 10 but might slip into a top 20.
I might come back to this.
I've mostly just listened to the Chat Pile album over and over again.
And The Cure.
And the new Godflesh dub the last week or 2.
That's it really
I've warmed up to the vocals on that Nocturnus AD album. Not in "Chris Reifert better watch out" sort of way, more they kinda add a bit of goofy to their eccentric charm.
They really do hold it back though, basically the reason I've dismissed it from end of year accolades. As Anvil said, the music itself is very worthy of attention.
I've loads left still to go back and listen to properly but out of everything, here's my favourite releases in no particular order.
Partholón - The Ocean Pours In
Coroza - As Within
Worn Out - Low
Sweets - Sweets
HSJI - This Damned Mess
Sumac - The Healer
Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere
Pissed Jeans - Half Divorced
Full of Hell - Coagulated Bliss
Couch Slut - You Could Do It Tonight
Inter Arma - New Heaven
Oranssi Pazuzu - Muuntautuja
Spectral Voice - Sparagmos
Chat Pile - Cool World
Thou - Umbilical
Guiltless - Thorns
Bloody Head - Perpetual Eden
Rezn - Burden
Nailbreaker - Robert Knight Wine Cellar
Codespeaker - Scavenger
The Cure - Songs of a Lost World
Realize - Two Human Minutes
Sunnata - Chasing Shadows
Human Impact - Gone Dark
Houses of Heaven - Within/Without
Also enjoyed Shellac, Melvins, Coilguns, Kollapse, Spectral Wound, Jesus Lizard - just have only listened to them once or twice where the rest I have had in rotation on and off over the year.
Been mainly listening to older music this year (what's new there I suppose). I'm even further out of the loop with new bands/releases than ever it seems.
I can only think of two from 2024 that I got and really enjoyed off the top of my head.
Vemod - the deepening.
Paysage d'hiver - die berge
I am also going to include one that came out the end of 2023 but has essentially been a 2024 listening album.
Aūkels - meddjan sklait ten.
This is the best Aūkels so far imo.
Oh I've thought of one more that should probably be on this list but my copy never arrived so I've only listened to it digitally so far, which is no way to get into an album.
Hrtkos - ognie twe kosy
For fans of newer atmospheric polish black metal like Aukels, Stworz, Beyond Time, Old Leshy, Wedrujacy Wiatr.....
I've ended up with a strong backbone of British Steel to the oul list this year...
1. JUDAS PRIEST - INVINCIBLE SHIELD
Someone commented on here recently that this album souds like it was made by A.I.
I get that insofar as it takes the best bits from each era of Priest and forges them all into one glorious, triumphant celebration of Heavy Metal.
2.BLOOD INCANTATION - ABSOLUTE ELSEWHERE
Absolute belter and cards on the table I was never much into the band before. Well, this was me told.
3. DISSIMULATOR - LOWER FORM RESISTANCE
Is there anywhere to go for a band that releases a Tech/Death/Thrash debut album this damn good? This reminded me of hearing Voivod for the first time.
4. ADORIOR - BLOOD ON MY TEETH
Utter savagery from a band I'd never checked out before, the vocals alone had my gob agape. Caustic, cruel and damn near essential listening.
5. VULTURE - SENTINELS
Lots of spins for these none more Metal German 'Bangers this year in an album chock full of hooks and earworms.
6. SKELETHAL- WITHIN CORROSIVE CONTINUUMS
This one caught me by surprise as the Frenchmen delivered a killer take on old school Swedish Death Metal.
7.SOVEREIGN - ALTERED REALITIES
Another notable Tech/Death/Thrash debut here and one that has got a shit ton of playtime. Well, it did come out way back in January.
8. FLOTSAM AND JETSAM - I AM THE WEAPON
One of the best thrash bands from the eighties still flying the flag, certainly the best singer, the band have updated and refined their sound with each release of late and long may they continue.
9.WITCH VOMIT - FUNERAL SANCTUM
These guys definitely upped their game in terms of songwriting here, creating an album full of classic DM that will stick in your head long after the slimline half hour running time.
10.BLITZKRIEG - BLITZKRIEG
I knew from the first spin I'd be having this on my end of year list. Raise your fist and bang your head but no moshing now, Big Brian's watching.
11. CIVEROUS -MAZE ENVY
A classic case of the album cover selling the album but this turned out to be a rewarding slice of Progressive Death Metal for me.
12. ACCEPT - HUMANOID
A very good year for classic Heavy Metal I thought and the German legends were right in the game with this one.
13. ATTIC - RETURN OF THE WITCHFINDER
2024 was the year I finally 'got' these Mercyful Fate wannabes, some excellent tunes on this one.
14. BRUCE DICKINSON - THE MANDRAKE PROJECT
A bit over indulgent on the second side of this but all in all another sterling effort from Mr.D and Mr.Z.
15. NECROWRETCH -SWORDS OF DAJJAL
This was an early release that stayed with me throughout the year, vicious straight up French BM in the vein of early Mayhem and Satyricon
16. PORTRAIT -THE HOST
Another one that suffered bit of over indulgence and bloat toward the end but there were more than enough good tunes on here to warrant many a listen. Hopefully that's the concept album idea out of their system...
17. SAXON - HELL, FIRE AND DAMNATION
I'm glad I went back and revisited this one because it damn near slipped through the cracks which would be a shame as the band are having an absolute blast in their twilight years.
18. 1349 - THE WOLF AND THE KING
Another album where I've walked away from and heard the songs in my head for hours afterwards. One of the surprises of the year for me this one, having never had the band anywhere near a Top 20 list before.
19. MY DYING BRIDE - A MORTAL BINDING
More Brit awards here but I thought this was a strong and dynamic offering from The Bride...Lets hope not their last.
20. HORNA - NYX (HYMNEJA YOLLE)
I had to fight running battles with myself over this final choice but I always wanted this Horna album in somewhere, in the year of their 30th anniversary to release a discography standout like this deserves plaudits . Suomi Finland !
Honourable Mentions...
Scanner -The Cosmic Race
Sig:Ar:Tyr - Citadel
Deceased - Children Of The Morgue
The Crown - Crown Of Thorns
Wormwitch - Wormwitch
Also to mention Satan - Songs In Crimson but I have such a strong aversion to that fiddly riff in 'Martyrdom' that I'm omitting it on principle.
Def check out Adorior - Author of Incest as well. It's a different beast but a total wrecking ball of an album.
Will do, I'm all over them like a rash now
Great list Thorn. I've about 5-6 albums there that are right up my alley but haven't heard. That's the weekends driving tunes sorted.
I'll be glad to give them all a rest for a while now!
I'd also give a shout to
DEPARTURE CHANDELIER - satan soldier of fortune.
Raw and honest BM but with a good sound and performance. Mix of pace, nice attack vocals in a sort of Eastern European style, use of keys here and there to enhance the overall experience. It ticks a lot of boxes for me.
Quote from: Grim Reality on December 26, 2024, 11:00:15 PMI'd also give a shout to

The first album didn't click with me but I saw them in Japan and they were pretty damn good live. I should give the new one a go.
Haven't checked our the new one but loved the first one. Sorta feel like I don't need more than one album by them.
Didn't even realise the Bye Bye Lamps had something new cooked up. 'Antchrist Rise to Power' is fuckin superb.
Attic - Return Of The Witch
Black Curse - Burning In Celestial Poison
Flamekeeper - S/t
I think you're there only other person I've seen mention the Attic one, fair play!
