Kowloon Walled City's cover of Low's "July" is probably my favourite ever cover. It keeps the vibe of the original, but is also heavy-as-shit. Bonus points for it getting me into both Kowloon Walled City and Low :abbath:
Had Nevermore's "Dead Heart in a Dead World" on earlier and it struck me just how good their cover of "The Sound of Silence" is. If you didn't know the original you wouldn't bat an eyelid at it in the track list. The lyrics fit the tone of the album perfectly, and the music they use fits perfectly.
I'm not really a fan of metal covers but always thought this Morbid cover was crazy as an idea on the Repugnant album. There was never any official recording of this song, all there is is a barely audible live bootleg. One of the best tracks on a near perfect album.
I like this one also, the Beatles are my most hated band so this is the only time you'd get me to listen to one of their songs
Related to the Nevermore one above, I quite like Sanctuary's cover of The Doors' Waiting For The Sun:

Their version of White Rabbit is class.
I've always found it mad that Another Vision was a cover. Best song on the album by far :abbath:
That Nevermore cover of Sound Of Silence is cringeworthy. I always skip if when I have the album on.
I always liked Morgoths version of Darkness by Warning. Like the original too mind you.
Keeping the Nevermore theme, I always liked Danes version of Paul Simons Patterns on his solo album

Not metal but I always thought the Neurotic Outsiders cover of Duran Duran's - Planet Earth was really good...

Always like that Heir Apparent cover.
I might get shot for this, but I've always loved Skyclad's cover of Emerald (indeed I would stick it on before the original).
Sepulturas cover of The Hunt and Crowbar covering No Quarter were always favourites of mine.
Great shout for Skyclad doing Emerald there Anvil, really raises the hackles in a way the original doesn't quite do for me.
I haven't heard the Skyclad version but that's a fuckin retarded statement
Passports revoked!
Checked it out. It's shite.
Great cover of a Manowar classic. Gloves of Metal rule tonight!

Two of my favourites.
Soundgarden's version of The Beatles Come Together and The Dillinger Escape Plan with Mike Patton covering Aphex Twins Come to Daddy has to be up there as well. Ministry's cover album is probably one of the most fun albums going too.
Voivod: The Nile Song (Pink Floyd cover)

Skyclad are indeed shite, and that cover is particularly awful. Mastodon's version, however, is damn good:
I'd forgotten about this Minsk cover of eyehategod.
I'd also forgotten that Minsk were fucking brilliant.

That's an infinitely better version.

Haven't listened to that Mastodon cover in years, and it's just struck me now that funnily enough the vocal sounds almost identical in places to yer man from Dead Lord, who ostensibly also tries to imitate Phil all the time.
Outside the quality stuff already mentioned (Realm in particular, just a jaw-dropping cover, maybe the best ever), I'll add Yob's relatively recent, bong-alicious cover of Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3NinUL9FJ8
A few obvious ones I suppose but I like them anyway:
(There was a sound board recording of this but it is gone off YouTube, downer)

I never liked Fear Factory's version of Dog Day Sunrise. It's the weakest track on Demanufature.
Cave In playing Townes Van Zandt, fucking class. Not sure exactly how strictly "metal" it is, but it's quality and the first one that came to mind.
They also did a more faithful (i.e acoustic, folk, not metal at all) rendition of another song of his, for any fans, it's great
Thou do a lot of covers (saw them do an entire set of Black Sabbath songs at Roadburn a few years back), this one with Emma Ruth Rundle doing a Cranberries song is unreal. Super heavy. Definitely one of my favourite covers.
Look, I got it least a third right, yeah?
I love how every thread has the potential to be 'controversial metal opinions'.
Skyclad stayed at it beyond the point of good taste but jesus fuck the first 2 albums are class. The first one, 'Wayward Sons of Mother Earth' is an all timer for me.
Scratchin' the head a bit now. The ones I'd normally think of immediately are already mentioned. Not metal, but adjacent I suppose. I've really gotten into the Procul Harum cover Transatlantic do on their first album. 'In Held (Twas) In I'. Very nice job of it.
Thou's Nirvana covers album is fantastic, the version without the samples anyway:
Bought the first Gates Of Ishtar album this week, there's a cover of I Wanna Be Somebody at the end which blows big time. Black/Death vocalists need to stay well clear of butchering the likes of Blackie.
Funnily enough, I'm heavily biased against Thou for their cover of Soundgarden's "Fourth of July". The harsh vocals are beyond bollocks on it.
And yeah, early Skyclad are class. Up until Silent Whales of Lunar Sea at least.
The masters of the KISS cover -
Plus these'uns -
Joe Jackson
D.R.I.
Trust
Celtic Frost
Husker Du
I really like their version of Kanasa 'Carry On Wayward Son' and the tracks on 'Anthems' too, although they are pretty close to the originals, as are their S.O.D. covers, obviously.
Since I've Into The Pandemonium on this morning 🤘

Deicide's cover of Black Night by Deep Purple if fairly mental
It's a kinda fun cover

I do like Thou, but I've never heard a version of that song that wasn't shit. Including Soundgarden themselves playing it live. The recorded version is perfection. I still mantain it's one of the best riffs of all time.
I will however, give Thou and The Body's version of "Terrible Lie" the nod as being on par with, if not better than, the original. That song lends itself to the heft so well. If you've not heard this brace yourself, it's brutal

Voivod's Die Kreuzen cover is excellent as well. which makes sense as the two bands were sort of counterparts in their respective scenes and influenced each other

Summer Breeze.

On a similar note, Fear Factory's cover of Wiseblood's 0-0 (Where Evil Dwells) is excellent:

Sure while we're at bands of a more controversial nature being covered:

Love that one myself. Often throw it on
Thought that Mourning Beloveth / WOTH cover split 10" was cool. The Weeping Song and Misery is the River of the World.
For metal covers, I find myself listening to Reverend Bizarre's cover of Dunkelheit more than the Burzum version.
Pallbearer covering Gloomy Sunday on their demo was a class addition too.
Has this been done? Pisses on the original:
I pretty much have zero interest in The Hu. Think they are very overrated. But this one definitely had my foot tapping.

If ever there was a metal band to do a cover of an 80s power ballad it's these lads.
Deftones version of No Ordinary Love is deadly.
This came up recently, a doomy/AIC-esque version of the Hot Chip song. I don't hate it:
In the most unsuitable for the weather track.... A Perfect Circle's version of Imagine.
Woke up with this in my head this morning. Absolutely lethal
