Ok lets fire this one up, lets get some of our favourite riffs out there, the song can be good or shite but if it has a deadly riff somewhere let us know. No "Sweet Child Child o' Mine" type stuff, only meat and veg riffs...
I'll fire this one up as its been in my head all morning (and has been since it was first released), the first 30 seconds are savage...
That is a belter. I now have have Lee Dorrian bellowing "Sheeee riiiiiides to the sab-buuuuuuth!" in my head.
And speaking of Sabbath...

You have the main riff which is deadly and then they lash that beast of a riff on the end.

Savage stuff so far lads!! :abbath:
The glam bands have some great riffs too..
The first few that come to mind are these;
The riff at 2.52 in Broken Valley by Life Of Agony

The riff at 2.41 in Diktat by Napalm Death
https://youtu.be/ORJm-Se8uDE?si=6qQk0IcOnOKqNkxh
This entire song. The Great Cull by Killing Joke
https://youtu.be/PF88psyCipg?si=DwLLtytXNXGsPe4e
And finally the sideways kind of riff in Eye Of The Beholder by Metallica at 1.50
https://youtu.be/LbvdqjL-hJ0?si=m6GXQXcU54Rd-Smp
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=50ERLnUE_Fo
The riff kicks in around 0:49 for those with no patience.
:abbath: :abbath: :abbath:
The opening riff is lethal.
First song I always check for on a pub jukebox.
If you're in a bar, you spot me with a pint in my hand and you hear "Dearg Doom" - it's game on.
Just realised that it has the same cymbal intro as my earlier choice...
Would that be "the unmistakable hi-hat cymbal intro of Bill Ward followed by the razor fuzz of Our Lord Tony Iommi"?

The Sab, biy... THE SAB!
All of the first half.
That intro. That verse riff.
The fucking CHUG on this fucker, what they do with the bare minimum of notes.
The intro to this track is insanely good, probably my favourite Slayer riff, just incredible groove. Such a shame the song wasn't filled out in that vein, imo.
Beautiful heavy melodic kick-in here around 8:14. Just a fantastic song start to finish but that but in particular gets me every time.
Newer one here, super dissonant death metal. The outro riff teased at 2:40 that comes back properly again at 3:17 is top shelf meathead shit. Entire album is well worth a listen.
The Firebird albums are packed with incredible riffs.
None more so that the ending riff of this song, which I wish could go on forever.
Another song with a great ending riffs -
Also, those slow, sludgy Azagthoth riffs are immense.
And the riff that comes in around 1.44/45 on this track, with the little widdly bit. You know the one I mean.
Bill Steer appreciation -
Megadeth - Killing is my Buisiness. That riff with the chromatic notes - banger!
Pantera - Revolution is my Name. Groovy chug!
This beautiful fucker of a riff just started playing in my head. :abbath:
Obviously you can't go far wrong with Gaz Jennings.
The riff that comes in around 6.13 is easily one of the heaviest, and best ever committed to tape.
The ending riff of this'un.
Some crackers with Death Penalty, Septic Tank, the first Lucifer album, and who could forget this wee nugget -

Shocking lads. Absolutely shocking
Absolute curveball here, because they're not even a remotely metal band, but the opening riff of this puts a lot of metal bands to shame for both catchiness and heft
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdN5FiO8NPE
I've posted them recently enough so I won't rehash them but the main riff from "Still of the Night" by Whitesnake and "Fink Dial" by Iron Monkey are both superb. And pretty much 90% of the riffs off Darkthrone's "Goatlord" are perfect.

I've been listening all day myself. Carnival Bizarre in particular. It is definitely one of the absolute best albums of the 90's.
I mean, every tune is a banger, and packed with immense riffs from Gaz. How underrated are songs like this in the grand scheme of things?
If it had the production of The Ethereal Mirror it'd be immense, but it's a bit thin in comparison and that snare sounds shite. I could do without the "Huggy Bear, oh yeah!" interlude in Utopian Blaster too.
I know the band hated the sound on TEM but it sounds perfect to me, heavy as balls. Ashes You Leave could be on Forest, or the Soul Sacrifice EP at least.
I like the production/mix on Carnival Bizarre to be honest, and Supernatural Birth Machine too. Although I don't think that is as consistent as the previous releases. But listening to it again there earlier, it holds up pretty well.
Most of their albums do really, even if there is the odd filler track or creative misstep.
I don't know why they dislike TEM sound wise though, it always sounded excellent to me.

I think it was too polished and slick for them, this would have been around the time of the Earache/Columbia deal so Dig would have had an eye on America, big rock sound was what he wanted. Heartwork has a similar polish to it IMO, more so in fact. Fear Emptiness Despair too, all in the same period.
I think I've only heard Supernatural and Caravan once each, didn't think much of either. His vocals were a bit too zany for me. The only post Carnival one I had time for was Endtyme, that's a heavy baysht.

Agreed on Heartwork and Fear Emptiness Despair, but I think Carnival works way better that either of those. Not that I don't like those albums.
I get why people maybe don't enjoy that mid period stuff, especially the zany humour bit. Endtyme is the business. You weren't into 'The Last Spire' though?
No, it did nothing for me.
I was referring to The Ethereal Mirror in terms of polished production, incidentally. The Carnival Bizarre sounds a bit stark in comparison. I prefer the demo version of Vampire Sun, for instance but it works on Hopkins (The Witchfinder General) somehow.
The riff that kicks in around the 6 minute mark, class.

Ah, I get you.
Yeah, the demo of 'Vampire Sun' is like a bulldozer. Love the 'Joe 90' theme tune intro too.
Yeah, I was disappointed that it didn't make the album. I might switch it in for the phone.
Mr Mustaine has an embarrassment of riches to choose from when it comes to the art of riffage.
But I've always been fond of the riff that comes in with "You say you've got the answers, well who asked you anyway?"
And the one that comes in with "The final judgment came, and was spread before you aaaaaaaaall!"
All the Cathedral talk has given me the goo. Have "Mirror" on going to work. I remember at the time struggling with "groovy" Lee. Some of the music was immense so I kind of tolerated it. I don't mind it now...it has a charm. Coming from Forest.. though, it was like...what the fuck is this ;D
It was quite the change. And the 'Midnight Mountain' video is still kind of jarring to watch, even if the cringe factor is at least slightly lessened by time, nostalgia, and general fondness for those involved.
But I will admit, sticking that whole "Ooh disco supernova..." bit in what was otherwise one of the mightiest doom tunes of all time - Cosmic Funeral - still grates somewhat, even now. Not that I don't enjoy that song, but still. Not exactly the song for it really.
It's pure CF worship but all the lovelier for it

Ashes You Leave may well be the moat underrated Cathedral tune
My favourite song of theirs, and that main riff is just fantastic:
THE riff:
When I saw Whitesnake at Graspop back in 2006 or 2007 they opened with Burn, was class. Great show all round. Many contenders for greatest Deep Purple riff though, hard to know where to even start but this one's just come to mind so, why not, first riff after the already perfect intro:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFCRm68OF7I
Also, every riff in surely DT's finest attempt to out-Rush Rush:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9E0_LZoN1U
Another absolute riff-fest all the way through here, yet with a very clear riff climax sliding in fashionably late at 4:33:
[Previews not showing up for this or the next one for some reason: Tribulation - Wanderer In The Outer Darkness from Formulas of Death]
https://youtu.be/14xl5BAEs94?si=CSRKdONvtLomejCt
And from fashionably late to turning up in a bad place and tripping balls. Can't find all the individual tracks on YT, but take the one that starts around 1:50 on track 1 for starters:
[Howls of Ebb - Imperial Prophets from Vigils of the 3rd Eye]

Had "The Garden of Unearthly Delights" on there a few weeks ago for the first time in moons (sadly the scratch 'n' sniff disc is no longer sniffy), and this is such a great unga-bunga caveman metal riff/tune.

Another Ian/Benante banger
The main riff just stomps on your chest like a mammoth would do.
This song consists of main riffs.
And don't get me started on the older CC material. They are supposed to be meat and potatoes death metal. Its the kind of meat and potatoes your mommy serves you for Sunday dinner, when you actually bother to visit Her once in a blue moon, mister big shot "I only listen to avant-garde bisexual - jazz - core".
Another meat and potatoes band, which slays consistently, very often reaching brilliance. Fecking "Warschau". Fecking "Plague Angel" album in general. Fecking "Werwolf".
Have to say, thoroughly enjoyed those two CC tracks, especially From Skin to Liquid! I really don't know that much at all past the first three or four albums, they just slipped off my radar at some point and I never spent any time with later releases. Will be rectifying that starting with Gallery of Suicides I think.
One to add: have always loved Believer's riffing style, so there's loads of good ones in here, but 1:30 is a classic for me. Then at 2:25 a proper "one of your five-a-day" sustenance metal riffs and back into the previous one for a killer double solo :abbath:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuOp1wu4PUc
Al liked Rigor Mortis so much he made the riff for Thieves like one of theirs and he ended up bringing Mike Scaccia aboard on Psalm 69.

Scorpions run from 75 - 85 was incredible. So many brilliant songs.
All respect to Uli, and of course Michael Schenker, both of whom are legendary - Michael might be my favourite soloist - but Matthias Jabs is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time, and their secret weapon. His fills and leads are instantly memorable and often provide the hook that pulls you in, he had a great melodic ear, an incredible sense of phrasing, and just enough flash and aggression to really appeal to the sensibilities of the era. Even in the slower songs where Rudolf takes the main lead, Matthias adds the flavour and melody.
I reckon even though Uli and Michael may be the more pioneering players, and Klaus, Rudolf and Hermann were writing the hits, without Matthias they would never have been as big.

Wild wonderful Purgatory is the only Karma To Burn album that did it for me. Always loved the main riff for this one -
Those Prong albums up there are full to the neck of savage riffs. Here's another one from them, from Cleansing this time:
Ah here I fucked up the youtube link.
It's track 4 - Cut Rate
One before the verse is savage
Double post

And this tune as well. Did I mention I love that album
Billy Corgan has hit upon some great riffs
Aside from the intro riff, the groove in the riff at 0.30 always gets my attention.
Can't remember if this has come up yet:
Or this:
Or indeed:
You could stick pages and pages of Trouble riffs in here TBH.

"Geek USA" is probably one of the single greatest riff collections I've heard in my life sequencing wise, each one is even better than the one before it. Incredible riffsmithery.
Not sure if it counts as a riff as I think he played it on a keytar, but sure look it:
Overkill did a mighty version on Horrorscope, so it qualifies here:
Quote from: Pentagrimes on July 05, 2024, 09:11:51 AMOh I didn't know know that, cool. I did read somewhere it was their collective favourite Soundgarden song.
"I Awake" has a belter riff too. Simple but hypnotic
Ah, I was talking out me hole (a regular occurrence in fairness) there, 4th of July is a Cornell tune.
Was thinking of Mailman, which is another banger at least.

Nice.
Jan Akkerman knew how to crank a riff in 1972...
Then of course there's this mad bastard performance of it on The Midnight Special. Edit - is that a sweep pick at 3:20?

Yup, that's the superior version of the song vs. the one that ended up on Focus.
That's a pretty metal riff (and album artwork) for 1968.
Crackin. Love the Girlschool cover of that too.

Does anyone else pronounce Slaughtered as Shhhhlaugthhered in their head? Maybe it's just me.
I remember when Far Beyond Driven came out myself and my mate Bren (bassist in The State Pathologist... incidentally) were on the way home on the bus from an athletics meet one Sunday evening and asked the driver to stick on the Metal Show. In 94 you can imagine how clued in we were to metal news- no internet, maybe a monthly dose of Metal Hammer but I don't know if I was regularly buying it by then, maybe a couple of years later- so when JK (Onderaydeeeowww) announced a new Pantera song we nearly blew our lids. We had our ears pressed up to the speakers on the underside of the baggage rail and couldn't believe how heavy the new song was. That tune being Shhhlaughthhhereed!
I fucking love a sweet opening riff which is extended a bit at the start of an album.

Had this stuck in my head all morning

Belter. Haven't listened to that album in an age, might chuck it on later.
The Manic Street Preachers' "Gold Against The Soul" has some massive riffs on it and is bookended by two monsters.
As mentioned elsewhere - this is an underrated gem of a record and Bradfield is criminally underrated as a guitar player.

It occurred to me earlier that Sepultura mentions in this were thin on the ground but glad to see this one got a mention.
While they have a ridiculous amount of heavier and more crushing riffs, the first time I heard this Mastodon track I remember thinking 'these lads are taking the absolute piss', the balls to build up to this point in the song, especially after the epic "I was standing at the edge of the world, and I still can't see it" crescendo...to then break out basically a funk rock riff just for the sheer fun of it.
https://youtu.be/hPxql0rPmKE?si=KAXqjzOffgYtAUhx&t=489
Two enormous pools of riffs opened up there with Nevermore and Mastodon!
Is there a single riff on Leviathan that isn't a stomping classic, for example? Plenty of heavy and crushing great ones, as you say ldj, but it's their lick-riffing I think I love the most, like this opener (song also contains a couple of quality crushers too  ):

Ooooh, Mastodon's best song, and one of the best metal songs of this century, full stop.
"... within the wrath we wait to be dirt again" :abbath: :abbath: :abbath:
I was just thinking of getting the aul 'Speed Kills' comps back in the day. Total game changer for me, discovered so many bands and albums through those.
This one, really simple riffs but totally crushing -
The classic chugga-chugga widdle widdle thrash riff -
Also -
I have a riff stuck in my head and I can't place it. I think it's a Bolt Thrower one but I can't track it down.
Edit: It finally came to me. That opening/verse riff is deadly:

Apologies if it's already been posted, getting riff overload from this thread.
Good call! Probably my favourite Bolt Thrower album overall.
One of mine anyway, it was my introduction to them.
The riff from World Eater is probably my favourite Bolt Thrower riff.
A feast of glorious riffage

Deadly tune.
Did we already have some Zep? Probably, but not this one. Supposedly one of Morello's favourites and you can totally hear the roots of his style in it. The riff first heard around 5 seconds in, behind the vocal. Great one to jam too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i59gFh-lzc8
Edit: Goldfish/over 40 memory... I posted some Zep already myself :-X
Since I've extracted my head from my anus and come back to enjoying the Zepp, been spinning them again recently. Celebration Day and No Quarter will always be their best songs to my ears, but oh my that's a banging riff! Never knew the Morello affinity before.
Edit - my favourite riff of their's is the intro to Ten Years Gone, and how the bass follows it. Perfect.
Ten Years Gone is peak-peak Zeppelin, one of several unbelievably rich songs on Physical Graffiti.
Anyway, don't want to derail things too much from metal, so maybe, throwing caution and Marmite to the wind, some Tool to direct things back a bit? (No Quarter connection and all that.)
Riff climax at 3:12

Yeah had III and PG on earlier, immense albums.
That Tool cover of No Quarter is fucking amazing. Paid €25 for the audio CD only of Salival many moons ago just to have it.
Adam Jones was one for the first guitarists that thought me that riffs don't have to be technical/fast/widdly/whatever to be good and that feel/atmosphere are equally important/potent drivers of excellence.
The Crowbar version of 'No Quarter' is MIGHTY.

Since Tom Morello got a mention there, I think this is one of his best riffs. Born Of A Broken Man.

Ridiculous amount of riffs in that song. Loomis in my opinion is one of modern greats when it comes to riffs/solos.

Lovecraftian sledgehammer of an opener riff
Killer :abbath:
I was listening to Agent Orange earlier tonight and it put me in the mood for this banger for some reason. Most often lauded for its solo, that shouldn't overshadow the sheer quality of the riffage throughout:

Heard this is a shit-hole New York dive bar while I was on holiday.
Not the most technically brilliant of things but at
insane volume and with an early afternoon pint of suds in hand one hand, it had me punching the air with the other.
Every so often this funky bass line and the "unstable" guitar riff creeps into my head
Not sure if Mr. Reznor has been mentioned yet, but he wrote some fucking savage riffs.

They were a seriously underrated band. Memoriam have a decent cover of this, she does guest vocals on it.
This album is now over a decade old, didn't expect some banging riffs to make me feel old.
Rocky George rules. Some savage playing across the board on this album.
Love this, so untypical of any other DM of the time.

That opening riff is one of Iommi's best and heaviest.
It's a top five Sabbath riff for me! The swagger off it! Soulfly do a decent cover of it too.
One of the greatest rock songs of all time.
