New album on the way from Dublin's finest. "Romance" is the title. Pretty decent promo clip doing the rounds inspired by the elevator scene n the Shining. Really looking forward to this, Skinty Fia is a masterpiece.
Appalling band.
Quite. I don't see the appeal myself, but then I'm not the target audience I suppose.
Awful band.
Can't get my head around yer man's vocals at all but the music is cool at times from what I've listened to. Don't understand their popularity.
Ah lads ye're way off here. First album was a bit rough but they are fantastic. This is going to be huge.
I've actually been meaning to post about Fontaines here and keep forgetting. Was interested to see what the opinion in them is back home, since they're homegrown. For all the people saying they're awful, why exactly?
I've only just started getting into them. Absolutely love their first album Dogrel. Was a bit disappointed they started to move away from that post-punk sound, but Skinty Fia is growing on me. Looking forward to the new one.
I also love his vocals, though I can see why people from back home might be mortified. Any time I hear a prominent Belfast accent I feel the same, but once you get over it, he's a really good punk vocalist with interesting lyrics.
His vocals are poor alright, that skanger aesthetic is totally lost on me. He's not the only one, Damien Dempsey for instance cuts through me.
The music I just find throwaway, generic, however you want to describe it. Instantly forgettable.
Like I said, it's not being made for me so if I'm missing some point then that's alright.
I've given them a go. Christ no, not for me.
TBH it's the vocals that completely destroy it for me. Music is ok in patches but I'd listen to other stuff that's in the same ballpark that I find much more fulfilling.
I saw the singer being interviewed a few years ago and he came across as this sort of tortured artist while sitting in his parents' kitchen drinking tea. I could imagine teenage girls being really impressed but it was cringey and affected. It put me off them. Maybe it's time to revisit.
Edit. Just had a listen to the new single and part of an old one. No.
Given them a go a couple of times over the years, know Skinty Fia fairly well. I don't mind the vocals so much as the repetition, that's what makes them most often fall on the wrong side of the authentic/try-hard to my ears. Grand though like.

Listen to "In ar gcroithe go deo" from last album, opening track. Go on try it.
Lol ...just can't get past the vocals.. pops on Altars of Madness
Cringey and affected is definitely a good description of any interviews I've seen.
Have that above song on now. His intentionally bad singing and repetition is painful. Would've been cool enough as an instrumental with the choral bit.
Have the new tune on now and his vocals once again ruining it. He's consistent.
I've never seen what he's like in real life or interview so only have the music to go on so far. I heard they all bonded over poetry in music school though, so I can speculate about what kind of pretentious scenester/hipster types they might be, just from remembering the exact same types floating around the local indie scene in the 2000s.
I still like his vocals. Maybe it's because I've been gone from Ireland for 9yrs, but I'm loving hearing such a prominent Irish-sounding voice being successful. Also any actual band with instruments getting mainstream recognition is exciting these days. It does seem like there's a huge swell happening back towards that kind of music, especially with punk-leaning stuff. It'd be nice to have a prominent alternative to the mainstream again instead of manufactured crap all the way down...

I listened to that track there. If there was any doubt in my mind before, that cured me of it. Just not for me, sorry.

That headline quote is the utterings of a total cunt.
The video in that article sounds like poor man's Versatile. Those cunts got Coolio to Ringsend before he carked it.

Jaysus lads this is getting an awful pasting isn't it. I'll nearly have to throw it on and see well hear
So I tried that song that was recommended it wasn't so bad. I wouldn't go mad for it but I don't see the big deal with the vocals or any of it really
OK lads we'll beg to differ here. I really like them and Dogrel is a great punk record. The sound was been refined over the years but Skinty Fia is brilliant.
My son who is a big Maiden, Priest, Megadeth fan is into them too as are some of his friends in school, I think the fact that these guys are mostly in their 20s is great for him as most metal bands he listens to are old lads.
It sure beats the he'll out of the other pop music out there.

Didn't even know it was a punk type thing. I only listened to the one with the Irish name and I thought it sounded like something Radiohead would be up to (except in English). Don't see what's so divisive about the j lad having a bit of an accent but I've never read or heard anything about them before
I really like that Skinty Fia album. New song is good too.
I kinda like hearing those Irish accents.
Their shtick is a bit grating alright. But maybe just getting old.
If you want to hear their punkier, slightly heavier stuff try the song Hurricane Laughter. Their early big 'hit' Boys in the Better Land is also a really cool song, albeit on the poppier side of rock. Both from their first album Dogrel.

Just had a read through that. Fontaine's trajectory reminds me of Kings of Leon a little bit in that they started off scrappy and then got bigger and more melodic. KoL of course eventually just went full utterly bland Coldplay. Going by the interview's claim of Fontaine's trying to write music for stadiums on this one, it does make me worry they'll go the same way...
Also, that new nu-metal influenced look they've got is utterly fucking ridiculous.
They just bang of insincerity all round to me. I have no issue with the accent in any case.
There's no shortage of decent post-punk revival stuff out there so I'd have no real interest in these lads when I could just listen to, say, Protomartyr instead.
Re the accent...English and Irish parents, lived in Skerries...I'd imagine it's very much put on. It's fairly shameless working class appropriation but it's hardly anything new...Rubberbandits have been doing it for years and those cringey spas Kneecap are milking it for all it's worth.
I like the new song, it's a bit fucking weird. I'd say if anything they will explore more boundaries with their music in the new album and beyond.
Whatever they say about nu metal or sing along there isn't a bit of the going on in this.
I think that the debut record is still a post-punk beaut.
Heard "Big" for the first time in a taxi Christmas week 2018 - on the way to a piss-up. Driver asked if he should change it, I told him to turn it up. Had to listen to the playback of a 2FM (ugh) show the next day to figure out what it was.
Got the album on the day of release. Didn't disappoint full energy and ideas. Some very Fugazi-like ("Red Medicine/End Hits" era) guitar work in parts.
People complain about the accent thing. I get it, I doubt that's how Grian Chatten sounds when speaks to his mam when he goes home for dinner. A "lace curtain" to quote Dignam from "The Departed".
Haven't listened to the two later albums half as much and the new single sounds shit to my ears.
Hurricane Laughter sounds exactly like the type of thing I heard in an art gallery years ago with a lad "scratching" on his MacBook while drinking cans of Hein-o and then telling people he didn't believe in CDs as a medium to sell his music on.
Just with guitars.
Jackie down the line is a banger
New song "Favourite " out this week. Completely different to Starburster but very good pop tune.
