Title: Comic and graphic novels
Post by: Kunt 4 Life on November 21, 2018, 06:51:37 PM
Might as well get this thread started. What's everybody reading? Still reading the transformer idw stuff which I hear is coming to an end. Best end on a high I guess.

Found this site which has tonnes of comics online to read. Caught up with walking dead this way https://readcomiconline.to

There's an english translation of Junji Ito's Frankenstein out now that I'm mad to get.  Few extra stories in the back so similar to the other collections I'm guessing, Shiver and Fragments of Horror.  I've read it before online but like to collect the physical copies of his stuff because I love the art style of it.

So they've ended the Walking Dead at issue 193. Glad it's got a proper ending although for me it dropped badly a long time ago.

I gave up on it years ago, when the Whisperers started to make an appearance. It had just gotten boring TBH.

Was sent a link to all of 2000AD the other day, so I imagine that'll keep me occupied for the winter.

I've been reading a load of Judge Dredd and 2000AD over the last few years. I love how grungey, unique and distinct the stuff is. The writers and artists seemed to have complete carte blanche to be as creative as they wished.

I was following Saga for a long time then forgot all about it.

Anyone read Judgement on Gotham? Looks right up my street.

I also see that they're bringing out a series on The Boys, which I read a good bit of, but wasn't blown away by. Have to say, it defied belief why they haven't made a series out of Transmetropolitan..talk about predicting the future..as pertinent to the current state of play as 1984 or Watchmen.

Saga's one I was reading and also lost track of, due a revisist, methinks.

The Boys was fantastic but, given that the same people made Preacher, I'm not optimistic about the TV series.

I've been reading the idw reboot of transformers and to be honest I m not thinking that much of it. Guess when you compare it to the amazing Lost Light/MTMTE title then it had No chance. Reckon they should have left it a while before restarting.

Has anyone read The Incal by Jodorowsky/Moebius. 20 pages in and I'm entranced.

I found it a bit puerile in places, but a solidly entertaining read overall.

Garth Ennis' A Walk Through Hell has been highly recommended to me, anyone read it?
Title: Re: Comic and graphic novels
Post by: StoutAndAle on August 12, 2019, 10:31:34 AM
"Saga" is worth continuing to read but Staples/Vaughan are taking a break for a year or more before they finish it.

"The Incal" is something that I've never heard of before but I looked at the first few pages. It looks like Transmetropolitan (which I highly recommend) and Judge Dredd so that's definitely piqued my interest.

I read the first couple of collected editions of "Chew" and I really liked it but somehow never kept up with it - probably because the only place to get it was Amazon.

I haven't heard of "A Walk Through Hell" but I like Ennis' other work so I'll add that to my list. I haven't read "Crossed" either. Must check that out.

Ennis' run on Crossed was great but as soon as he left, the decline was swift. He came back for another run, that was pretty good.

Picked up a copy of Judgement on Gotham...2000AD meets Batman. The artwork is excellent by Simon Bisely who does my favourite Sláine stuff.

Bisely does The Horned God story which I cannot recommend enough..Irish mythical crazy stuff. Love it.

The old 2000AD stuff had elements of the puerile to it which I actually quite like so looking forward to continuing with The Incal when I get the chance.

The Horned God is one of my all time favourites. The painted artwork by Bis is stunning. Book of Invasions is cool too. Drawing on the mythical migrations of the Tuatha de Danann and Sons of the Dea (not Willie O), with a bit of Lovecraft thrown in for good measure.

I preferred Bisley's (and Fabry's) art for Sláine to Langley's, though he (Langley) suited The ABC Warriors perfectly.

Always been a Bisley fan, his ABC Warriors work was the first I saw, if memory serves. I have the first two parts of The Horned God, and had all of it in its initial 2000AD run, but stupidly loaned it to someone and never got it back. I must pick up the reissued versions, though I think they're in a slightly smaller format?

Bought Judgement On Gotham when it came out, the second one too but never came across the third one.

I remember reading somewhere that the (fairly meh) second and third Dredd/Batman crossovers came out when they did was because Glenn Fabry was taking so long to do Die Laughing - so long they ended up getting Jim Murray to take over for the second part. Pretty enjoyable one that - Joker as the fifth Dark Judge.

Been doing a re-read of Vertigo Hellblazer - still absolutely brilliant and essential reading. Not just horror comics - nearly every issue had something to say about the state of various forms of politics, mainly in the UK.

Also really liking The Immortal Hulk at the moment - probably the best thing to come out of Marvel for a long time. It's very like Alan Moore's Swamp Thing - The Hulk as a modern horror allegory.

Speaking of Hellblazer...

I bought the first 3 Sandman TPBs last week (the 30th anniversary versions), looking forward to reading it properly, only dipped into it on the past.

You're in for a ride there, man. The Sandman's awesome.
If after reading you want to go further, check out Lucifer. Also they've brought back some characters lately for a The Sandman Universe series of titles - Books Of Magic, The Dreaming, Lucifer and mostly recently Hellblazer as well.

I'm looking forward to it alright. There's a danger of falling down the rabbit hole in trying to keep up with all the offshoots, though.

Tried Moore's run on Swamp Thing a few years ago, couldn't get into it (just sticking with the Hellblazer/John Constantine theme), but I might go back at some point.

Been reading Matt Fraction's Hawkeye. Great stuff and stylish with it too - you feel like you're watching a Edgar Wright film when you read it, snappy dialogue and all.

I've been waiting for Transmet to get the treatment for years, stunning it has been overlooked really. The new Watchmen is scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross which is always a reason for me to be interested.

Speaking of which, has anyone read High Level? Rob Sheridan who did all of the NIN artwork for years has been heavily involved in that but I've not seen it anywhere in this country yet, hopefully that will change when the paperback comes out in February.
Title: Re: Comic and graphic novels

The Watchmen score is decent alright, first decent thing Reznor's been involved in for a long time - every previous score he's done has been awful and NIN have been unlistenable for at least a decade.

Ross' last decent work is the score for The Book Of Eli.

Just finished reading House Of X / Powers Of X, Jonathan Hickman's soft reboot of the X-Men series. Really good, setting up a nation-state of mutants and a much more hardline Charles Xavier, who's joined up with Magneto, and has claimed his dream has changed from being wanting to help humans to wanting them to acknowledge mutants as the inheritors of the Earth - essentially becoming Magneto. There's a whole load of Israel/Palestine allegories in there.

Been on a 2000AD rediscovery kick recently. So far I got Judge Dredd vol. 5 (in the 'case files' series), which is great but I have seen that there are almost 40 something 'case files' titles, where to next?
I also got 'Shakara' which I haven't delved into yet, 'Future Shocks' (awesome), 'Missionary Man' (weird, ultra violent future western stuff, great!) and getting some 'Rogue Trooper' arriving soon.

Class, I've got 3 of the case files and man they're so inventive and unique. You should definitely pick up some of the old Sláine stuff. The Horned God series with Mills and Bisely is genius stuff...Celtic mysticism and beserker slaughter with a dash of goddess riding.

Loved Shakara, violent as hell, and Henry Flint's artwork is perfect for it. Rogue Trooper, depends on what you get, the original run started off great til it ran out of steam, then they tried rebooting the in the 90s with Friday, which while starting off pretty decent, nosedived, and when they tried to merge the continuity with the original Rogue... oh dear. They ended up just scrapping the whole thing mid story.
The modern stuff's pretty good - it's the original Rogue, set on Nu Earth. Some good spin offs as well, like Jaegir.

Judge Dredd the Apocalypse War is about as good as comics get. I think it's number 5 in the series but a quick google should confirm that. Well worth it. I really enjoyed Judgement on Gotham with him and Batman too. These lads do a breakdown on everything 2000AD. Eager to get my hands on more of this stuff.

The main reason I got vol. 5 in the case files was for 'The Apocalypse War' but there are so many other volumes, some by Grant Morrison which I have never read even though I have plenty of his other work lying around. Will look at that Dredd video for other recommendations.

Got the first volume of Rogue Trooper today finally so looking forward to getting stuck into that.

So many interesting 2000AD titles out there, 'Flesh' looks good (recommended?) and there is also 'Judge Anderson' (speaking of the Dredd case files).

Volume 2 is pretty much one storyline called the Cursed Earth. Not nearly as epic as Apocalypse War but a good yarn nonetheless. The video is very good though.

Excellent video recorded back on the 10th anniversary of 2000AD including Alan Moore among others. Really goes into a fascinating and highly sophisticated thought process behind the whole operation that I can't help feel reflected a really well educated generation that had come up at the time in Britain that ranged across the class divides many of whom found their outlet in media, music, culture. When you think of the music that used be on the TV in the early 80's, the comics, the TV programmes, yes there was plenty of shite, but so much unique and individually interesting stuff being created.

Nice!

I read the Dredd series America, which was very cool, online.

Following that I read Endgame which is just absolutely incredible. Takes up 3 books as far as I know and it's all.about a virus being released by the Sovs into the Mega Cities. I was reading it as Coronavirus was taking off in the media and the parallels are unnerving..had me a bit jumpy at times around the gaff  Couldn't recommend it enough though.

Morrison also wrote a few of the 'Future Shock'  stories, compiled in the 'Thargs Best of Future Shocks' compilation.  Have quite a few Grant Morrison books. 'Arkham Asylum' (bizarre), 'We3' (really heartwarming), 'St. Swithin's Day' (Controversial on release), 'Seaguy' (surreal as hell), 'Kill Your Boyfriend' (insane and rare), and, of course, 'The Invisibles' (all volumes- if you haven't read it :-\). Any favourite Grant Morrison titles beyond those?

Invisibles was great for sure, also his run on Doom Patrol. The Filth was a twelve issue series with some of the same themes as Invisibles,  but more screwed up.

He has one more, Voice of the Fire. I just read it earlier this year. In hindsight, I read them in the wrong order, Voice of the Fire is almost like a taste of what is to come in Jerusalem. The bad news - its out of print. I had to hunt one down on ebay. Voice is good but Jerusalem is his magnum opus. Should say, its not necessary to read one to follow the other.

Haven't been able to pick up 2000AD for a few weeks now because the newsagents decided they were part of the shutdown, really hoping they'll be able to get the backorders in when it finally lifts.

Looking through my 2000AD collection recently  and decided to re-read 'Missionary Man' ('2000AD presents') as well as 'Future Shocks' (featuring early work from Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and Grant Morrison). A re-read of 'Rogue Trooper' (1st collection) is on the cards too.  Speaking of collecting 2000AD, would love to get some 'Ace Trucking Co.' at some point, prices though.

I just missed some second hand Slaine stuff in the comic shop round the corner from me here the other day, sickener. I keep meaning to go back to the old 2000ad strips, devoured them as a child (they had a "school library" in primary school which had a couple of annuals!) but have only really gone bacl to "Nemesis" and some of the Dredd stuff as an adult.

The Best Of 2000AD in the late '80s/early '90s was great for collecting those strips, I still have a pile of them in the attic.

I picked up the first two books of Sláine: The Horned God when they came out (having read them in the weekly comic, obviously) but missed out on the third one. The new reprints are shamefully small.

From memory - this is the first collection of what Vaughn & Staples said will bring the series to a conclusion, that it would be about as long again by the time that they were done.

I completely forgot about it too until Amazon sent a mail saying that it was out this month. I think that the last trade paperback collection (Vol.9) was released sometime in late 2018. A long time to expect people to wait.

Bit late to the party but found a bunch of comics I got as a teen about 10 or so years ago recently and have been flicking through them.

Mostly Batman stuff, but I had forgotten how good some of it is, reading Frank Millers Batman Year One at the moment.

Must have a look into some of the 2000ad stuff talked about in this thread.

Batman: A Death in the Family (1988)

Enjoying this, a bit different and quite violent. Trying to read different takes on Batman, not just the Miller or Morrison stuff.

Just seen Ian Gibson, artist of 2000ad/Judge Dredd has passed away, must really do a proper dive into the classic Judge Dredd stuff.

I finally got around to finishing Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing the other night, last volume gets into some pretty esoteric stuff but all in all the entire run is amazing, all in all I'd probably rate it higher than Watchmen/V for Vendetta tbh.

Also picked up a big omnibus of Frank Miller's Daredevil, starts a bit shakey as he was only the artist at first but it really picks up once he takes over writing.

Saw that, it's a shame. His style took a bit of getting used to but once you adjusted it was class. The Ballad Of Halo Jones was amazing. Speaking of Alan Moore, I think Gibson did Skizz too?.

Speaking of Frank Miller, recently got 'Year One' (Batman) having never read it and how amazing it was, wish it were a little longer! Now awaiting his 'Daredevil' run in the post.

Also, any fans of Constantine here? starting to read it (got two comps) and man is it weird stuff but good, some of those comps on amazon though.. pricey!

Quote from: Carnage on July 12, 2022, 10:40:45 AMThe Best Of 2000AD in the late '80s/early '90s was great for collecting those strips, I still have a pile of them in the attic.

I picked up the first two books of Sláine: The Horned God when they came out (having read them in the weekly comic, obviously) but missed out on the third one. The new reprints are shamefully small.
Haven't read any Slaine but saw this and had a search in the forum, 2000ad have just released an anniversary edition of The Horned God, reprinted at the size of the original art apparently, might pick it up myself.

I saw that alright, cheers. It's on my list, it'd be nice to have it in full size, the reprints that have come out have all been too small to appreciate the artwork. My birthday's coming up so I might drop a hint.

Picked up the Slaine. Paperback, the Deluxe 3 book hardback set was over €100 in Forbidden Planet. It's a glorious reprint. The art is a lot more vibrant and clear then the previous version. It's huge though !

I've been dropping all the hints at herself about this.
Looks absolutely gorgeous.
There's a class Steve Dillon collection too.

I bought the first 10 TPBs of Saga a while back, just getting to them now (I'd read a lot of it years ago but had forgotten most of it). I'm into vol. 5 at the moment, it's just so bloody weird and good. Vol. 11 is out now so I must pick that up too.

It's a great series, I'm up to 10 myself. Certainly fucked up in places but I'm loving it and looking forward to seeing where it's going.

About halfway through The Sandman atm, enjoying it but it's fairly heavy thematically.

Picked up the first vol of Preacher for something a bit more light-hearted in-between.

I have Sandman lined up for after, another one I read some of years ago and picked up the TPBs along the way. Preacher's great fun, go for The Boys after.

Being making my way through the Nailbiter compendium. Brilliant stuff. It's got a Se7en/X files feel, where there's this small town in America that produces serial killers.

Did read through Gareth Ennis Walk through Hell at Christmas there but wasn't really that impressed.
