Title: Any collectors of 90s metal mags on here?
Post by: Dark Stranger on February 12, 2024, 04:15:16 PM
I'm specifically looking for issues from the first half of 1999 to see if any of them have a flyer from the July 99 Metallica gig in the Point. Anybody with a collection out there?

I believe I'd have all the Metal Hammer copies from 95 thru 2001-ish somewhere but I don't believe the Dublin show got mentioned anywhere. They had played the Big Day Out in the UK at that time and so all the ads were for that.

Yeah - a mate and me are trying to find a flyer for that gig. It's one we're both missing from the flyer folders, and we're thinking it might have been advertised at some point in Kerrang weekly? We're trying to figure out how people would have found out about it even happening in the first place, it had to have been advertised somewhere haha. Metallica forums, extensive google searches etc have thrown up nowt.

I think I may have heard about it on the Metal Show on 2FM at the time. It sold out pretty quick too. Mad to think it was only 22 quid.

I'm assuming that's where we heard about it too but radio only advertising in 1999 seems mad - there wasn't even any billboards near the Point from what I remember.

I don't recall seeing a single poster around the city at the time advertising the show. I was on the prowl for one. There were posters on the day of the gig saying "welcome back boys" or something like that.

I'd say your best bet might be if you could find a collector of old Hot Press.

Hot Press! I didn't even think of that - nice one.

I remember the Welcome Home Boys now that you mention it, that was cool.

Wasn't that the gig they had Eric Bell come on and do Whiskey? I was at that myself. Went up with a few older lads from school which is how I assume I heard about it. Word of mouth was the way back then. You'd imagine in your local music shop that sold tickets they'd also have posters advertising up coming gigs, but maybe I'm just inventing that.

I have a bunch of old metal hammers in a bag in the garage, I'll have a look there later.

That's the gig. Old Eric loved every second of it....

Good idea re Hot Press. Thinking about them maybe having to give a copy of everything to the National Library, something might be available here...

https://catalogue.nli.ie/Search/Results?lookfor=Hot+press

Just a brief look it seems most items are non-digitised though, so an in person visit might be required, or they might help with an enquiry...

Don't have a flyer but I remember heading to that on the bus to the point and there was a big "Welcome Back Boys" billboard on the way out which I wished I could have had to take home. And what a fucking hangover I had but the gig blew it off me. Anyway I don't think the magazines had anything of it because if they did it would have been stuck to my wall at the time. If ye do find one I'd like to see it all the same so best of luck lads

Was that the Cunning Stunts tour? I remember being in the Gaeltacht at the time anyway. Poxy as I was into Metallica at that stage. Was it the 5th of July or something? That said, I heard Detox by SYL and Iced Earth for the first time at the gaeltacht so not a total waste.

No it was the Garage Inc one in 99.I missed the Cunning Stunts one, which by all accounts was better but then I'll just pretend it wasn't

Microfiche copies of Sunday papers from back then might throw up something in the library as well. Seems a whole lot of trouble you're going to anyway!

Yeah that was the one that was supposed to be better by all accounts and in my head I'm thinking it must have been fair fuckin good because the 99 one was great as it was

Was the Cunning Stunts tour the Load/Reload one, with the 'collapsing' lights and 'intimate' encore? Good show but I remember being annoyed at how contrived it all was. And So What is still shite.

Missed COC that night too, was in the bar and came out just as they finished. Raging.

Looked through metal hammers for 1999, no mention of Dublin gig. Ads for Metallica at Dynamo and Milton Keynes, plenty of articles about 3 colours red and pissing razors etc, but no flyer for the Point, sorry.

Was into the first 2 Pissing Razors albums around that time as well. Jesus. Must go back and give them a listen for the craic.

In a similar vein - If anyone has a copy of Terrorizer from 1999/2000 with the "100 greatest albums of the 90s" in it, I'd be willing to pay something for it. Cheers.

I'd have a suspicion they won't hold up too well Matt

It was funny looking through 6 months of mags last night. Nearly the same favourite bands pushed in every issue. Fucking Dani Filth all over the place. They were making a big drive on 'Britrock' at one point. Radiator and nobodies like that. Then US garbage like static x and powerman 5000. Brutal!

Mad how we'd all struggle to know how a gig was promoted back then as most of us were online in some capacity and 1999 doesn't feel like a lifetime ago (most of the time). However, social media hadn't really appeared then and people certainly weren't glued to their phones. I used to frequently check bands official websites for tour updates and outside of that I relied on posters and flier handouts for smaller gigs.

I only found out cos my classmate who was into metal too told me about his. His older brother took us down to it, but he would have had to find out somehow himself. Radio / word of mouth seems mental to me.

Was at it, can't remember exactly how I heard. Presumably, as well as radio spots, it would have been advertised in events listings in newspapers too, which people were still reading at the time

I think there was a thread on the old forum called "Collectors and their collections", or something like that, might be worth checking on the wayback machine? Was probably yourself that started it and all!

I remember Pissing Razors sounding kind of like a more extreme-ish Fear Factory. I thought they were shite. The late 90s was a bad time for metal in retrospect. Perhaps if I had been buying Terrorizer instead of Metal Hammer I would have had a better time of it but yeah, some really awful music being pushed at that time. It pushed me to be a bit more adventurous in my purchases so no harm in the end.

I knew a chap who was always about 5 albums late to the party and he had the pissing razors album and jaysus twas awful. Thousands of riffs and ne'er a song between em

I'll never forget outgrowing Kerrang. Terrorizer had better bands, but wasn't as well written and didn't have many decent jokes in it.

Also trying to remember how I found out about gigs in those days...

Def word of mouth. In Belfast it would mainly have been in Ticketmaster with posters about the place, a big billboard at the start of Botanic Avenue that had all the big gigs on it, and general posters and flyers about the town too. Actually now that I think about it, I think the posters and flyers about the town was by far the main way you'd find out about gigs back in the day.

It was posters and flyers for me too - I have a folder full of almost every flyer or poster for every gig I've been at, just that bastarding Metallica one is impossible to get!

I used to get a poster from every local show I played back in the day. Must dig those out next time I'm home, would be a great little nostalgia trip to see a cross-section of local metals bands that would have been active in the 2000s.
