Title: Anthrax Kreator Testament 3Arena 25th Nov
Post by: Pagan Saviour on January 22, 2024, 05:53:04 PM
Cool lineup and am presuming it's the reduced configuration in the 3Arena, would those bands do 3-4K?

Hell yeah! Excellent news  :-* I love all 3 bands, although I'm out of touch with Kreator for a fair few albums at this stage.

Great line up,that will appeal to a lot of heads!.Whats the capacity of the national boxing arena??didnt Testament and a few others fill that comfortably about 2 years ago?.So add add a few thousand to that id say,its got a bit of a big event feel to it so will draw a good crowd.

3arena is 14k, not a hope

€72 a ticket...steep but a good line up so I'll probs fork out for it. For me Testament should be the headliners with the other two as support but that's the age old Big 4 debate for you!

Fantastic line up and tickets will no doubt he snapped up fast.

Having said that, I won't be going on account of Bruxelles no longer catering to the unhygienic and I'm not prepared to have a shower for the sake of being let into a pub for some pints before or after the gig.

Think there has been a jump in ticket prices and this is just how much gigs are going to cost from now on. The fact that Sepultura and Jinjer sold out the Olympia in a few hours charging €70+ indicates people are willing to pay these new prices.

Personally don't mind on this occasion as I like all 3 bands and would expect to pay €40 to see Testament, Anthrax and Kreator individually in the academy. Just hope Testament get a decent set.

This is the kind of tour we always miss out on due to not having a 5k capacity venue so I'm glad to see it come to Dublin, hope it sells well enough.

I would say that's more because it's the last jaunt. I wouldn't be paying 70+ to see Sepultura ordinarily.

Great announcement, very happy with the 3 arena, able to bring the young lad. I always feel these days it could be the last time around for some of these bands so gotta go. Never seen Kreator live either.

Yeah those prices are actually alright when put in the context of inflation with everything else when you consider tickets for a single big act were about 60-65 for donkeys years. I remember paying 60 for Depeche Mode in the Point in 2006. An extra 10 or 15 more a lifetime later for smaller but triple the amount of acts is fine.

Kreator have played 3 times in 11 years the same amount they've played in last 20 years!

0 times in 7 years is not something I'd conjure to be regular meself and that's before you gotta note they've not gone beyond the pale in that time either.

Yeah, think that was 2002, great gig though Mille whinged about the venue at every opportunity. Seen them supporting Cannibal Corpse the year previous too which was also a good show.

All three bands have enjoyed a resurgence for sure but it's at Academy, Olympia, Vicar Street level. It'll be interesting to see how it translates to arenas.

Anthrax are a difficult band to judge;they are in between big and medium sized in terms of popularity. As Someone mentioned above Dublin probably needs 4/5k venue.

100%

Any time I've seen Anthrax it's been a different line-up.

Also, out of all those bands they consistently deliver the worst bang for buck in respect to setlist. The same fuckin stuff every time. So much good material they could play yet they stick to their dopey covers Got the Time? and Antisocial with the usual selection from Among the Living, so lazy. It's criminal that they ignore the bush era but they could dig into Persistence or some of the other records a bit more.

That really pissed me off when they supported Slayer a few yeara ago. A 7 song set and they played 2 covers.

Ah no, fuck that. Some bangers across all the records there, I'd take anything off Sound Of White Noise over anything else they've done to be honest. I've seen the band with either singer too and Bush comes out on top for me, better frontman and you got a far more varied setlist with John fronting the band. I'll admit he doesn't do the earlier stuff as well as Belladonna but the likes of Keep It In The Family sound heftier with Bush at the helm.

QuoteThat really pissed me off when they supported Slayer a few yeara ago. A 7 song set and they played 2 covers

Yep, weakest band on the bill by a mile. They also played themselves on and off the stage to the Cowboys From Hell Riff, pathetic.

Man, make the sacrifice for the guy! When would he ever get the chance again? He could sleep on the way home, or go into school an hour or two late.

It reminds me of a Cork lad in secondary school back in the day who went to school as usual in his uniform, but had his metal clothes in his bag, so changed out and fecked off to catch Kreator in the Top Hat instead.
Hence he earned the nickname Baggy  :abbath:

Think I'll give this a miss. Would have been all over this 25+ years ago when Bush was in Anthrax and Testament had The Gathering out. Sadly, Testament haven't released anything of worth since and while I like Belladonna, I've seen them stick to that same damn setlist too many times since his return.

Someone mentioned them not playing any Bush era these days and that's 100% down to Joey flat out refusing to do it. He butchered Only the few times they managed to convince him to try it and he's either incapable of singing the lower register stuff or he deliberately doesn't bother to try it.

Caught Testament recently wasn't billed they were doing it but set was solely from first 2 albums only. Personally I don't mind a repeat of such, on fire!

Are Anthrax closing the night here for certain? Clearly Anthrax are bigger in the UK but here that's easily up in the air here they didn't pack the Academy for their best album in full and they've (only?) been back as a common tag team partner to Slayer since.

Aye, would love to go simply just to see Testament do the early stuff, but no interest in another Anthrax retread through Among the Living's greatest hitsc and their tired cover tunes. Seen countless Anthrax gigs over the last 15-20 odd years, multiple line-ups (Spitz, Vera, Dette, Caggiano, Donais) and the one constant being the same old shite they always play.

The John Bush gigs of the early 2000s are the only ones i really remember fondly.

But the Belladonna era is woefully underrepresented too, If Joey is sticking to stuff he sang with the band originally then play more stuff from Persistence and give us a deep cut from the other records. Drop the stupid covers.

Anthrax. From DME's Facebook:

QuoteTimes (subject to change):
Doors 17:30
Testament 18:30
Kreator 20:00
Anthrax 21:45

Premier Inn around the corner is only €65 a night, I'd nearly be tempted. But no.

Just back from Wolverhampton show, absolutely top notch, was a bit worried for anthrax after the stunning kreator show, but they were brilliant. All 3 bands, great shows. A lot of young uns there too, loving life, thrash having an upsurge? Scottish/ English gigs are just so much better vibes than Dublin, before, during and after metal gigs.

Sure they're all nearly OAPs. Bello's 59, the guitarist lad's in his 40s, the rest are in their 60s so probably aren't able to remember more than a few songs.

I was tempted to pick up a cheap ticket until I looked at their setlist - plenty of great old stuff but I'm not going to pay to hear Got The Time and Antisocial again.

If they both headlined, maybe.

Testament got fucking shafted for sound quality when they supported Judas Priest in the same venue in '09. First time seeing them and could barely hear Skolnick's guitar.

Here's hoping that doesn't happen tonight!
To be fair, any supports I've seen there in recent years had decent sound. I thought all bands at the Slayer Farewell gig sounded great.

Class performances from Testament and Kreator. Testament sounded good but I thought the sound for Kreator was a bit better.

Alex Skolnick though, surely one of metal's all time best lead guitarists? Melody, phrasing, tone, technicality and speed. That was my 6th time seeing them and probably the most impressed I've been by him. To be fair, it's also probably the most sober I've been when seeing him too
A fair bit of newer material in the set, but it sounded great. They played Return to Serenity, which I've never seen them play live before and it was amazing.

Kreator were just fucking lethal, great stage show, very aggressive lights.

Watched about 4 Anthrax songs and left early to get a bus. They were good but I'm just not really into them and they certainly weren't going to top what just went down. I thought that promo video before their set was a bit weird, just felt a bit insecure or something.

Saw a few younger looking people in their late teens in high vis (security!?) getting stuck into some moshing, great to see!
Some unlucky fucker got badly hurt during Testament, seen security trying to escort him away, the poor cunt looked rattled and could barely walk, he ended up being taken away in a wheelchair. Didn't seem to have any friends with him at the time, I hope he's ok.

Awesome show, still trying to figure out what I liked best, certainly no disappointments there, except maybe sound quality here and there (mainly with Testament)...two tough gigs for Anthrax to follow, though I thought they were great...felt the crowd was getting a tad tired towards the end, not surprising after the brutal metal storm we had just endured...and I've just never been a fan of those childish cliché plastic devils Kreator seem to be so fond of, though these are just a detail...and yes, as someone else has already pointed out, that intro clip for Anthrax was a tad weird, somehow very 'un-metal', if that means anything...hope no-one got hurt in all the circle pits and walls of death they had going tonight...a decent crowd, too...anyone got the bands' set lists?

I liked the intro video! Reminds me of the stuff Metallica used to play before their gigs. Seeing the crowd reaction to the different musicians and celebrities wad entertaining.

Anthrax came off as a headliner at first, but their set starting to get tired legs in the second half.

The sound was the best I've heard in the 3Arena (perhaps anywhere). Maybe it has something to do with my seat being in the balcony area.

It was an awesome show with great production. Only way we in Ireland can get that full European Kreator headline production and seeing Testament do Return to Sanity was a treat.

I love these big package tours like the Megadeth, Slayer, Priest ones that have come through over the years.

I thought the floor seemed quite busy. Presume it did well enough to justify putting on seeing as this tour only hit the Apollo in London and Manchester anyway. Hopefully there's more to come.

I did enjoy that cartoon part (was that Machine Gun Kelly that got decapitated?), and it was fun to see who got the biggest cheer (Phil Anselmo?).

The talking heads part just seemed like some validating shite that went on far too long, different voices saying Anthrax Anthrax Anthrax Anthrax Anthrax Anthrax which cresendo'd into a massive visual cue 'CHEER FOR US' on the big screen.

I'm sure lots of people enjoy that kind of goofy humor, I just found it pretty lame in the moment and very cringey.

But then again, I enjoy Limp Bizkit so who fucking cares

A pretty savage gig overall. Kreator absolutely stole the show with a vicious performance and an amazing stage set-up. I'm not a big Anthrax fan but enjoyed their set overall.

I was mainly going for Testament but missed their first two songs due to a Luas diversion and one particularly gormless, slow as fuck frisker. They really did get a raw deal sound wise and for a band of their calibre it's disappointing. Alex Skolnick was shredding away at one point and I couldn't hear a single note.

One thing I'm really getting annoyed with at gigs is bands playing snippets of songs or cutting songs short. Kreator launched into the Coma of Souls title track, much to my utter delight, but then only played the intro of it before leading into Enemy of God. Anthrax played about 3/4 of A.I.R and cut it short before the best part of the bloody song! ;D

Testament gave a great performance, but the guitars lacked punch IMO. Also, is it just me, or does Steve DiGiorgio's bass often overpower things? Same here, very high in the mix, clacky, and buzzy. The man is a legend, but I still reckon Greg Christian was infinitely better suited to the band.

I'n not a huge fan of Kreator post 90 to be honest, but they were fucking savage. Immense performance, especially Ventor and Sami Yli-Sirniö. For all of the intensity and satanic imagery, the thing that strikes me about Kreator these days is just how bombastic they are. The image says Watain, but the vibe is just as much Blind Guardian - Celebratory, fist pumping, anthemic stadium and festival fodder. Excellently delivered mind you, and highly enjoyable, but a far cry from the bestial thrash they originally became known for. Tellingly, Betrayer, Terrible Certainly and Pleasure To Kill were the highlights for me.

Anthrax were fucking brilliant. Thoroughly predictable setlist, but when the tunes are that good it doesn't really matter that much does it? Funnily enough, even though they began with 3 stone cold classics in A.I.R., Got The Time and Caught In A Mosh, for me, it really kicked into gear with Fight Em Til You Can't.  The start of 'Be All, End All' is always mighty. Nice touch with the Lizzy intro to Indians too, and Gung Ho is one of the best thrash tunes of all time.

My only gripe is Jon Donais. The guy can obviously play, but he just widdles aimlessly through the Dan Spitz solos, which really fucking grates on me. Especially as Spitz solos were always of the "song within a song" variety, and really lifted every tune, they are as much a part of those classic tracks as the riffs and choruses. Donais doesn't bother his hole even sticking to the main melodies and then adding his own touches, he just blazes through generic speed licks. Why the fuck don't Benante and Ian take him to task for that shit?

It didn't ruin my overall enjoyment of the show, but it is fucking aggravating.

I wass in the middle, about 15 people from the front and could hear Skolnick fine, but it definitely should have been louder. There's was a noticeably better improvement for Kreator's guitars.

The overall sound for Kreator was incredible, especially the guitars. Rhythm and lead tones on point, perfect mix etc. I was so impressed with Sami Yli-Sirniö. I knew he could play, but he has a really great mix of classic hard rock and modern metal styles. Very fluid. Great interplay between him and Mille.

I could hear Skolnick, but yeah, it could have been louder. For me the rhythm guitars were the issue. Very muddy. And add that to the buzzy, overly loud and distorted bass, it really robbed them of their usual power.

Quote from: Carnage on November 27, 2024, 10:31:10 PMThat intro video's fairly cringeworthy.

Yeah. It's one thing on the actual anniversary tour, but why keep using it?

All it did for me was confirm how fucking annoying Tom 'cringy soundbite' Morello and the wonky headed fucker from Slipknot are. They could easily make another intro video with bits and pieces of their history without all the celebrity endorsements and smug circle jerk BS.

I think his rewriting of history annoys people too. He claims that he never had a guitar lesson in his life, but Michael Angelo Batio was teaching him for ages. There's even a video of an early Rage show with Morello doing the over/under hand technique. Why lie about that stuff and not give MAB the credit?

Lads, you don't need lessons from MAB to do that over/under thing, and it has probably been attempted by most lead guitarists who have seen it.

Quote from: Paul keohane on November 29, 2024, 08:05:19 AMThere seems to be a lot of hate for Tom Morello, what's that about? . (I genuinely know nothing about the guy other than he was in RATM and Audioslave)

Everything he says about other bands sounds like something that came from a PR company. Even his KISS induction from the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame was embarrassingly hyperbolic and cliched to the point it makes Paul Stanley's stage raps look reserved and profound. And I say that as a huge KISS mark.

And that whole thing where he tried to smear a restaurant as "anti worker" when he couldn't get in - and get a special room for him and his crew no less - revealed what an entitled tosser he is. Just another rock star douchebag, who loves the whole celebrity status thing, despite his "workers of the world unite" posturing.

He smacks of self importance and insincerity IMO, and he is the very definition of cringeworthy.

Plus he looks like a cunt.

Oh, and his music is largely a load of old bollocks. So there is that.

Rage have zero credentials. Love the records for sure, they are a good band if of their time but we're all grown up now you can drop the shtick

Seen them in the 3 arena around 2010 - great show but they lost me when they said we "the working class" have to unite against the rich. They were rumoured to be getting half a million for that show, that's without a t shirt sale.

Same! And they were fantastic!
But as said previously... Of their time.

They've been peddling their glory days for far too long now.
Make some new music to see if they've still got what it takes.
Either put up, or shut up.

Was mad about them as a kid but they are a laughable bunch of hypocrites. Tickets were 60e and shirts about 35e while he spouts about conglomerates. Shut up. The gig was great though 😄

Saw them in the Tivoli in 93, I think it was. Their t-shirts were notably more expensive than average back then, too, the hoors

Saw them headline with Vader and Annihilator a few years back, also think they headlined the gig with Exodus and Death Angel just before covid but wasn't at it.

Wasn't there a big one with Carcass and Amon Amarth, or am I making that up. Just before covid again?

They played with Amon Amarth, 8 years ago!

2018 and 2020 were headline shows, last gig before that was Priest Feast in 2009.

Remember the national stadium one now that I see it, had to sell my ticket for some reason but that was a great lineup

No recall of the show with Annihilator though. Ah well, new album supposed to be out next year so hopefully they'll make it back over

I think the old forum was closed down around October 2018.
