New album just announced... Not out till March, though.
Firepower is fantastic! I really hope they can keep that momentum going.

Cunt of an album cover.
It's terrible, isn't it!
But fuck it... If it's Firepower Pt.2, I'll be happy. The music is what matters.
First song not out till the end of the week.
I'm just going to go ahead and forever call this album Invincible Sheath :abbath:
Shit artwork but I am sure I will buy it.
Artwork reminds me of 'Ram it Down' with the colour schemes. Will echo what everyone else said, if it's 'Firepower pt 2' then good enough for me.
Real shame we didn't end up getting them here supporting Firepower, it was as good an album as you could hope for from a band this late in their career. Hoping the new one is similar and the airing of those tracks isn't an excuse to skip to the jacks in March.
The fuckin JP logo is meant to be in the top right hand corner...ffsakes..wtf
Invincible Shield is a fucking terrible title. It sounds like brand of surface cleaner or panty pad.
The album cover looks like something off a Marvel movie poster. I was surprised by how good Firepower was so hopefully they still have a bit of magic left. Faulkner has described the new tunes as progressive which is worrying. Hopefully it's not another Nostradamus!
i dont mind the cover myself

Wouldn't mind a few longer tunes a la Sad Wings or Sinner.

I think it is cheesy. I loved the last album and hope this is pt2 of that. Roll on March to see them play
This new song is about as deadly as you could hope for it to be. If the album is like this, fantastic.
Love it!
I'm really liking Panic Attack...
It's a belter TBF
It's alright, a bit Priest-by-the-numbers at first, picks up toward the end before yet another solo. The synthwave style intro is appalling though.
Meme metal
Liking that track, was surprised by the power-metally vocal melody in the verse but it's pretty cool.
Threw on Firepower after and it still holds up, could have trimmed a track or two but it's easily their best since Painkiller, looking forward to the new one and seeing them in March.
You have to respect Halford's (and the bands) genuine passion for heavy metal music, never went through that weird period of resenting being associated with the genre, or the dreaded "we're not a metal band phase" every metal band that gets successful seems to go through. That's why they're still delivering after 50 years while their peers are phoning it in.

Theo only track I initially didn't like on Firepower was Flame Thrower. Easily the cheesiest of the bunch, but even that grew on me over time.
The album is a banger from start to finish.
Panic Attack isn't bad, it's a bit cheesey and reminds me of the Painkiller and even Ram it down era. Some nice guitar and Halford sounds good.
I'm surprised at how much I like that new song. Pure Top Gun metal.
Loved Firepower, I'd agree with the comment regarding Flame Thrower. New track is solid Priest.
Yeah, another Firepower would be no harm. Another Redeemer Of Souls on the other hand...

Thought I read somewhere years ago that at one point Halford would only listen to music that he had recorded himself which is also very bizarre if true.
Love that new track, yeah it's not groundbreaking but it did bring a smile to my face and I did end up listening to Priest for the rest of the day yesterday so job done in my book!
Listened to it a couple of times. Grand like.
Weak as fuck, to be honest. The Tom Sawyer middle section doesn't save it. It doesn't go anywhere, it doesn't say anything, it just exists for the sake of existing, by the (mediocre Sneap-by-numbers production) sound of it. Jugulator remains the last thing they did of any merit or personality. I bought Firepower based on all the positive reactions and thought it was fairly crap, to be honest. Won't make that mistake again.
Nothing wrong with that track, I like the synthetic intro too 🤘
I like it. Thought Firepower was shite but that works for me.
Weak enough song. Wouldn't race to buy it if many others are this level of quality.
Thought I heard Rocky training for the Russian at the start!
I love it. Pure cheese, pure priest!
Thumbs up from me too, the synths at the start definitely got an eyebrow though. I think they might have been a bit mischievous releasing this now at the same time as KK's release, the JP isn't out til March for chrissake
Some of yis need to lighten up a bit, it's good. As good as you could hope for this late in their career, plus the 80s cheese is welcome (to my ears). How is Rob Halford still doing it? Looking forward to the album, though a March release seems a little too far away.
The 80s keys certainly work for me too. More please.
The album artwork looks like it's for a new, horrible flavour of Lucozade or something.
Anyway... Halford was Marc Maron's guest on WTF yesterday. I'm about halfway though. Decent enough chat.

New track is great and, as others have said, if it keeps up the momentum of Firepower then I'll be a happy chappy. "Give me more cheesy synth", I say!
Another new song, Trial By Fire:

That new one is incredibly dull. Here's hoping the majority of the album is more like the first single.
Yeah! Doesn't kick like the first one. But hopefully it sits well on the album as a whole.
new song is awful...halford sounds like a guy on youtube putting on a halford voice
Sad Wings on again earlier. Man that album is growing into my favorite Prudast Jiest. So feckin good.
New songs are shite. Richie may have been brought in to look like KK but he can't write a good riff like KK, based on these and the last album.
Quote from: Eoin McLove on November 20, 2023, 08:41:15 AMSad Wings on again earlier. Man that album is growing into my favorite Prudast Jiest. So feckin good.
Yes I agree with this. Has been my favourite since I was a nipper. Dreamer Deceiver is fantastic. 70s priest really has a different feel to it.
It only clicked with me today how much of an influence 70s Priest are/ were on Pagan Altar.
Got the 'Collector Series' tape as a young fella. Has both Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings... on it.
Couldn't believe it was the same band who would go on to make the classic 80's gear I was after getting into.
Rocka Rolla has it's moments, but Sad Wings... totally blew it out of the water.
It's up there with the absolute best from any of the classic bands, IMO.
Got well into Rocka Rolla at one point. A great album but got blitzed by what came after it, starting with Sad Wings.
Also, I enjoyed that new tune.
New tune not my favourite of the 3 but not bad. Some nice hooks... might grow on me.
After my initial excitement about Panic Attack the last 2 songs have been a bit meh for me but with good moments in them. The album is on pre-order for me anyway so lets see how it pans out...
Crown of Horns, more like Bag of Dicks amirite!
Yeah, meh song alright, but the grand end of meh.
The intro reminded me way too much of Bill Bailey taking the piss out of U2
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H8dZwXnMrRU
It's OK at best, and that intro is awful. I just hope it's not going to be another Redeemer Of Souls.
New tune is up and it's a ripper.
Crown of Horns took a little while to grow on me but I really like all 4 tracks. Been a while since I looked forward to an album this much, augmented by the Dublin show being just 3 weeks out now.
Just lashed through the 4 of them there again and Panic Attack is my least favourite of the 4 but they're all good.
This new Priest album and the new Saxon on my shopping list.
New Bruce Dickinson too for the hat trick. And new Borknagar. Like London buses eh..
I think Bruce is gonna come in third place after Priest and Saxon who may have a photo finish.
Liking all the new Priest stuff, is it great - of course not, their heyday is decades ago but not bad at all. Gig should be fun, is there many tickets sold would ye say?
regards etc.
One of the lads tried for tickets there and there was only seated available.
Quote from: Don Gately on February 26, 2024, 01:28:16 PMLiking all the new Priest stuff, is it great - of course not, their heyday is decades ago but not bad at all.
Give Firepower a blast. It could rival anything they did in the 80s.
Yes listened to Firepower for a while when it came out, decent for sure. I've been a Priest fan since the 80s, even bough Ram it Down when it came out, for me Sad Wings us the pinnacle, love that album. All of the 70s records are fantastic, apart from debut which I still like. Defenders of the faith, Screaming.., pick of the 80s but I always had a soft spot for Point of Entry also. Painkiller still holds up today too.
Newest one, Serpent and the King, is a damn fine JP tune :abbath:
Have to say fair play, out of all the older bands they, and I would argue Uriah Heep are still doing well.

I can't get into Point Of Entry at all. I'd call it their low point if they hadn't made Nostradamus.
Sure I've said it manys a time, but I do love Desert Plains. Rarely get through the whole album though.
I think Point of Entry is great. Didn't like what I heard of Firepower when it came out but have it on now and it's sitting better.
I think part of what makes these sound good is Halford's vocal abilities haven't diminished a jot with age. He still rips :abbath:
Ah I know Point of Entry is a bit cheesy and it's probably bit of nostalgia as it was one of the earlier albums I owned but Heading out to the highway, Desert plains, turning circles, Solar angels all great. Even Ram it down has some bangers too.
They are a very consistent band to be fair. Screaming For Vengeance would be my favorite, as said above there are some quality albums in their discography. I loved Firepower, wasn't mad on Redeemer or Nostradamus though.
Finally gort to check out the latest track!
What a ripper! :abbath:
Angel Of Retribution & Nostradamus would be the only two weak points suffering from being too long.
The mid 80s era Priest stuff is class. I won't hear a bad word said about Turbo!
You will: it's shite.
I like Angel Of Retribution, one of my favourites of theirs. Nostradamus is overlong and doesn't really work, but there are a few belters on it. You have to admire their ambition in doing it, and Halford really pushes his voice on a couple of tracks.
Their low points for me are Turbo (you're not Def Leppard lads, thankfully), Ram It Down and Redeemer Of Souls.
yet yet yet there are bangers on both Turbo and Ram it down...still I know what you mean the overall quality isn't there. British Steel is an interesting album and one that really isn't mentioned here much. Some think it's the best but for me it's not top 5. But Rapid Fire, The Rage are great, Living after midnight isn't good or is United, Breaking the law despite being played to death is still a great song. a 4 star album for me.
Quote from: Carnage on February 27, 2024, 03:59:49 PMTheir low points for me are Turbo (you're not Def Leppard lads, thankfully), Ram It Down and Redeemer Of Souls.
Ram It Down isn't a great album but the title track is killer and one of my all time favourite Priest songs.
The newest song sounds great and Halford seems to be in mighty form.
Blood red skies and Ram it down are fucking monsters and top 20 songs beaches

Ram It Down has a cracking run of songs all the way up to the awful Johnny B. Goode cover. Does lose it from there on, though Monsters of Rock is at least listenable as a closer.
'Turbo' is great, if you're going to bash any Judas Priest album it should be Nostradamus or Redeemer (good stuff on both albums but each too long/bloated).
Any Ripper Owens era fans here? Just the two albums he did.
There was a track or two worth a listen on each, but I didn't listen to either enough to take note of what they were called. Cathedral something, I think was one of them?
Redeemer is shite from start to finish, definitely their worst album.
Yeah, Cathedral Spires, should be a staple in their live set. No telling Rob that though.
I was late to the Priest party (didn't pay much attention to them 'til about 15 years ago) but when I bought a 'complete' boxset during lockdown, it omitted the Owens period entirely. Hardly complete - the 2 studio albums might not have been great but the 2 live albums were very good IMO. Given that all are out of print now, picking them up will probably cost me more than that fucking boxset.

Jugulator is cool but not without doing some work first. Every song has a long and pointless intro which completely ruins the flow, makes it hard to listen to. I made a copy with the intros edited out of it and it's a much better listen. The title track and Cathedral Spires should be in every set they play. Ripper did Cathedral Spires when he played Fibbers a few years back. Fucking deadly, so it was. Demolition was not so good, though Hell Is Home is a decent tune. They badly needed a producer to cut the shit out and whip the songs into shape on those two albums, instead of Tipton calling all the shots. I think what they've done since Rob came back is fairly weak, too, to be honest. Jugulator is the last album of theirs I truly give a fuck about. Every album since has had good moments but, overall, is bathing in weak sauce.
Cheezy intros/interluders aside, Jugulator is a Ripper (ahem! 8) )
Demolition was lacking, though.
Turbo was a pretty big album for me back in my formative years. Absolutely loved it. Still do.
Nostradamus is a total turkey, too.
I get what they were trying to do, but they completely faceplanted it.
QuoteJugulator is the last album of theirs I truly give a fuck about. Every album since has had good moments but, overall, is bathing in weak sauce.
I'd agree with that. I don't think they've released any absolute turds since then except maybe Nostradamus. The other records are all grand but once the dust settles I never reach for them.
Whatever about the patchiness of the Ripper albums, Cathedral Spires is one of the best songs they've ever done and they need to play it at some point before they stop touring
Well it's out and fucking hell it's great! Roll on next week!
I'll probably pick up a copy at the show. If it's half as good as Firepower I'll be delighted with it.
Listened to it right through this morning. On first listen it's pretty good, I think. Not as good as Firepower but still decent.
Roll on next Friday!
Yeah this is pretty decent for sure. As an aside, Halford really is some lad - he's 72 years of age and still able to turn in performances like this!
Bought the vinyl today but haven't had a chance to play it yet. Please tell me the sound/ production is better than the streamed version which sounds like it was recorded in the jax.

The apple music version sounded a little tinny on the phone/ cheap headphones (as it would), but when I ran it through the tv surround it sounded class.
Really enjoying the new album. Could be the best since Painkiller.

Enjoying it..Richie's a killer player
Ya, the playing is great and the songs aren't shite, I just don't know how arsed I am with it.
Pecksniffian :o
A grand listen, few great bits.
Very good. Much better than you could hope for at this stage of the game. Some very tasty playing, and Halford sounds ridiculously good for his age !
Listened to it while driving earlier. Grand album I'll definitely be listening to it again. Reminds me of the Angel of Retribution album, which I think is also fantastic.
Seeing as the 'Now Playing' thread has been temporarily hijacked by everyone gushing over Sin After Sin, I thought I'd hijack the Invincible Shield thread instead.
All things Priest, Halford, KK, etc.
,
So I'll kick it off with a pet peeve of mine.
All the remastered versions from years back. What the fuck were they playing at with the bonus tracks?
Recordings and outtakes from album sessions tagged onto albums years older. Mostly from the Turbo and Ram It Down sessions, but spread across all the earlier albums.
Just made no sense.
Especially with regard to Turbo and RID.
Two of their albums that could have done with a decent remaster version with all their own outtakes and live cuts from the tours.
I remember going to the trouble of arranging those remaster bonus tracks into a chronological playlist and thinking I was king shit. Pretty sure I accidentally deleted them all after. Nonsensical behaviour altogether though, no good reason for putting them out that way.

Looking forward to checking it out.
I see in that article that Priest have also gained control of Sad Wings of Destiny as well. Wonder if they will wait until 2026 before they reissue it.
Anyway, was listening to Rocka Rolla over the weekend because of this thread. Very enjoyable album, which I hadn't listened to in years!
Sad wings is the zenith for me. Love early Priest.
