Title: Your top 5 metal albums of all time
Post by: Don Gately on March 28, 2023, 08:27:36 PM
Not sure if you guys follow the Hudson Valley Squares on YouTube but they did an episode last year on top 5 heavy albums ever and it got me thinking.
I'll go with
Sepultura - Beneath the Remains
Mourning Beloveth - Formless
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness

Today, let's go with...

Coroner - Mental Vortex
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Trouble - s/t
Watchtower - Control And Resistance
Cynic - Focus

There was a thing a few years ago picking 20 and that was hell, so 5 would be impossibile for me.

Dust or Sullen Sulcus would be in there, depending on my mood.

Some early Burzum too, probably.

Stormcrowfleet perhaps.

Stream from the Heavens maybe.

Lamentations or New Dark Age depending on my mood...

That was easier than expected but it would probably change in a week's time.

Edit. There are some very glaring omissions that are beginning to pop into my head.

In The Woods - Omnio
Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin at Dusk
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Paradise Lost - Draconian Times
Griftegard - Solemn Sacred Severe

Probably my top five at the moment.

I usually need a top 20 at this point, no way can I pick only 5, so have 10 and ye can give out to me over what doesn't count as metal:

Devin Townsend - "Terria"
Mr. Bungle - "Disco Volante"
Nine Inch Nails - "The Downward Spiral"
Type O Negative - "October Rust"
Faith No More - "Angel Dust"
Strapping Young Lad - "City"
Godflesh - "Streetcleaner"
Isis - "Oceanic"
Converge - "You Fail Me"
Neurosis - "Through Silver In Blood"

Ah, don't know if my head can handle this and me that loves a list. I was going to say I'll give it some thought but the thought of giving it some thought is already frazzling my brain, I'd imagine Beneath The Remains would have to be in there though.

Impossible question, it'd be a different answer daily. Or hourly*. Anyway, off the top of my head, and fairly pedestrian:

Iron Maiden: The Number Of The Beast
Death: Leprosy
Nuclear Assault: Game Over
Metallica: Ride The Lightning
Fear Factory: Demanufacture

*Edit: Just looking at some of the above and I could do another 5 or 10 from previously mentioned ones, depending on mood.

Todays choice would probably be

Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Nevermore - Dead Heart in a Dead World
FNM - King for a Day

They'd all be some of my favourites and are just the ones I've been listening to again in the last while so they make the cut. Once I change the cds in the car it'll be a new five

Tell ya what though, non-contributing parasite and all that it makes me, this makes for excellent ideas for revisiting or properly digging into certain albums that wouldn't even be on my radar if I was trying to make a top any number of all time!  :abbath:

1. Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
2. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
3. Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace
4. Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon
5. Bolt Thrower - Warmaster

Now to kick myself for all the albums I forgot.

Okay, here's my top 5 selecting exclusively out of albums appearing in previous replies
And get out of it with yer FNM and Mr.Bungles... trying to narrow the choices as much as possible here!   :abbath:

Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin at Dusk
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Metallica - Ride the Lightning

I don't really think these are top5, but when I started to write a list and think about what I reach for when I'm stuck, these just came to mind so quick. I think you could do 100 easy and still correct yourself. They're also albums I vividly can see myself blasting in my first car (RIP Purple Polo), which I think counts for something.

Mastodon - Leviathan
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Deicide - s/t
Neurosis - Times of Grace
Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith.

Mostly excited for seeing what stuff others include, there'll be big revisiting done.

Ah this thread idea is sick I tell you, absolutely depraved!

Kids always asking me my fave and I can't ever answer them as the noggin just melts! I'd have trouble picking top 5 a year...

Of the above, Beneath the Remains, Altars of Madness and Warmaster would certainly be in the reckoning. Probably add, chop and change with:
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Deicide - s/t
Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream
Demilich - Nespithe
My Dying Bride - As the Flower Withers
Annihilator - Alice in Hell
Brutal Truth - Extreme Conditions...
Death - Human

Ah feck it I'll have to leave it at 11, before adding more I'm itching to add. Can each count as a half, and I'll drop one?

Nah, thinking of the ones I'm leaving out, I'd have to take 100 if I was on a trip to Mars - otherwise let me at home to wither in a nuclear wasteland.

It's not possible to pick 5, you twisted individual!

Ah, I see Deicide was added while I was typing  :abbath: Such a killer album

I prefer it to the proper album TBH. The comedy tracks are all well and good but having just the 'serious' tracks in one place makes for a more satisfying listening experience.

Mercyful Fate - Melissa will always be In the top 5

Probably Defenders Of The Faith and Somwehere In Time too

but at the moment..

Ulver - Bergtatt
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
Ozzy - Ultimate Sin
Crimson Glory - Crimson Glory
Deicide - Deicide

GNR - Appetite For Destruction
Iron Maiden - Live After Death
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Slayer - Decade Of Aggression
Now, these 4 were EASY......choosing the 5th might prove to be impossible.

Jaysus it's tough. Today, even this morning -

Borknager - Borknager
D666 - Cold Steel
Septic Flesh - Esoptron
Windir - Arntor
Death - Symbolic

It's like asking which is your favourite child. When one is acting the bollix you still love them but the other gets preference!
Time and place is huge as well.

Down - Nola
Metallica - Puppets
Terror - Keepers Of The Faith/Agnostic Front - Something's Gotta Give.
Dissection - Storm Of The Lightsbane
Slayer - Divine Intervention

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Alice In Chains - Unplugged
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Obituary - Cause Of Death
Helmet - Betty.

The second list is just as important as the first to me.

If we're getting another five, then I'll add

Voivod - Nothingface
Death - Spiritual Healing
Kreator - Renewal
Obituary - Cause of Death
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick

And if we get an additional five later on, I'll leave these here just in case

Living Colour - Stain
Celtic Frost - Monothiest
Pestilence - Testimony of the Ancients
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Faith No More - The Real Thing

edit-> been trying to keep it as one album per artist but am already brutally conflicted

I have to add Appetite For Destruction and Hysteria to my list.
They were the first 2 tapes I had.
Took them from my brother as we shared a room as kids. He played Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi etc at night.

Hysteria made me aware of rock but it as Appetite that put me on the road to ruin.
I remember seeing the video for Paradise City during the credits of Top Of The Pops and having some sort of epiphany. It was aggressive and dangerous compared to Girls,Girls,Girls.
Blew the doors open.

Traveler crossed my mind actually. Formulas a good modern shout, With Hearts Towards None, Graves of the Archangels, the Blood Revolt album, Foundations of Burden by Pallbearer, Macabre Omen - Gods of War be some others from the late 2000s into the 2010s that I would rank really high, outside of th typcial stuff we've all been listing. There's an implicit longevity with favorite too, everything I originally listed I've loved since I was 15/16 at th oldest. It's a nostalgia/comfort thing as much as it being a stone-cold favorite to some extent I think.

It's the "soundtrack to your life" thing. I'd say a lot of us have the music of our mid to late teens featuring heavily. I know most of mine is that late 80's to early 90's era where I never left the house without my walkman and five or six tapes stashed in a big pocket I had made specially inside my biker jacket.

A few years ago, I built a unit for the house to get my CDs out of boxes in the attic and out on display again. I had space for 298 CDs and my first shortlist was over 1000 😂

The top five only lasts for as long as it takes to play then and you want to hear other fantastic stuff.

In terms of more modern albums I'd absolutely have to throw in Vektor's Terminal Redux and NeO's Portal of I. Probably listened to those two more than any others from the 2010s

Maybe if I first split into five sub-genres and then try pick top album from each, that'd be easier?

Thrash: Metallica - Master of Puppets (yeah, but what about Rust In Peace!?)
Prog: Mastodon - Leviathan (Voivod and Tool getting squeezed out here, but this one is actually easy enough)
Black: Mayhem - De Mysteriis (sorry Varg, please don't kill me)
Death: Sepultura - Beneath The Remains (partly a cop out: it's easier than picking a top Morbid Angel out of the first three)
Tech/Prog-Death: Death - Individual Thought Patterns (Unquestionable Presence a contender, but realistically Death have to be on my list somewhere)
Classic: Judas Priest - Painkiller (no, yes, no, gah fuck off!! Shit, and that's six too, not five!)

I've tried to redo and just narrow it down to five by decade, one per band, and keep it as strict to metal as possible. So while I'd definitely have some Devin Townsend, I reckon Ocean Machine and Terria veer a bit more into prog/rock territory. Same could be said for the 70s picks but sure I wasn't going to just throw in five Sabbath albums.

Found it hard to even think of five for the '20s, been slacking a bit at checking out new music the last few years

70s
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Rainbow - Rising
Rush - Hemispheres
Judas Priest - Stained Class
Deep Purple - Machine Head

80s
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
King Diamond - Abigail
Flotsam & Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver
Atheist - Piece of Time

90s
Blind Guardian - Imaginations from the Other Side
Death - Symbolic
Fear Factory - Demanufacture
Dark Tranquility - The Gallery
Sepultura - Arise

00s
SYL - Alien
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Nevermore - Dead Heart in a Dead World
Cynic - Traced in Air
Symphony X - The Odyssey

10s
Vektor - Terminal Redux
Ihsahn - Arktis
Enslaved - RIITIIR
Ne Obliviscaris - Portal of I
Obscura - Omnivium

20s
First Fragment - Gloire Eternelle
Winterfylleth - The Reckoning Dawn
The Ocean - Phanerzoic II
Persefone - Metanoia
Allegaeon - Damnum

Title: Re: Your top 5 metal albums of all time

If I was forced to pick five I'd split it by the major subgenres:

Traditional: Iron Maiden - Powerslave

Doom: Black Sabbath - Master of Reality

Thrash: Metallica - Master of Puppets

Death: Autopsy - Mental Funeral

Black: Dissection - Storm... (yes I'm counting this as BM).

Still a fairly 'generic' list but this would be the best way to cover the different corners of metal in 5 records, could have gone for something a little more representative of early 90s BM but Dissection are just undeniable...

Some bands like Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Death, Mastodon, Voivod, YOB, Soundgarden etc I could probably make a desert island list from their discographies alone.

OK, here goes, no bands repeating, ever. This is even harder than just five, I was selective with bands who might appear in a different decade. Could do with 20 each for the 80's and 90's, to be honest (or even just 90-93)  :abbath:

Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels

Honourable mention to Carnivore - ST

Be interesting to see from some of the early posts on this thread if the authors still have the same top 5 now that it has been resurrected. It's impossible tbf even to narrow it down to ten.

How many of us have a top 5 entry that we haven't stuck with four at least a decade actually, like how difficult is it for anything new to break in there among our old favourites?

I only got into Necrophobic in the last two years, and their debut is right up there. And Portrait only this year - "Crossroads" is an all-timer now.

So without further ado, here's my decades list (in no order of preference) that features neither of those records  (in fairness after I typed it out I thought "wait, no Trouble, Candlemass, Autopsy, Suffocation, Absu, Carcass, Napalm Death, Cathedral, FFS!").

1970s
1. Van Der Graaf Generator - "The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other".
2. Black Sabbath - "Master of Reality".
3. King Crimson - "Red".
4. Camel - "Moonmadness".
5. Rush - "A Farewell to Kings".

1980s
1. Manila Road - "Crystal Logic".
2. Realm - "Endless War".
3. Voivod - "Dimension Hatröss".
4. Bathory - "Under the Sign of the Black Mark".
5. Watchtower - "Control and Resistance".

1990s
1. Death - "Human".
2. Atheist - "Unquestionable Presence ".
3. Cynic - "Focus".
4. Gorguts - "Obscura".
5. Solitude Aeturnus - "Into the Depths of Sorrow".

2000s
1. Mastodon - "Leviathan".
2. Necrophagist - "Epitaph".
3. Nevermore - "This Godless Endeavour ".
4. Nile - "Black Seeds of Vengeance".
5. Decapitated - "Organic Hallucinosis".

2010s

2. Gorguts - "Coloured Sands".
3. Defeated Sanity - "Passages into Deformity".
4. KEN Mode - "Entrench".
5. Blood Incantation - "Starspawn".

2020s
1. Blood Incantation - "Absolute Elsewhere".
2. Revocation - "Netherheaven".
3. Artificial Brain - "Artificial Brain".
4. Azusa - "Loop of Yesterdays".
5. Ænigmatum - "Deconsecrate".

1. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
2. Slayer - Reign In Blood
3. Megadeth - Count Down to Extinction
4. Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
5. Nails - You Will Never Be One of Us

Big names, no Metallica I always feel Megadeth cancel Metallica out with better musician ship. Master of puppets could make the grade but I prefer Reign In blood. Count Down and Vulgar are harder Rock / Metal at its most accessible in the 90s. Everything that is great about what I love.

I think the Nails choice shows the return to the underground. Lots of bands not here, Nevermore, Xentrix etc

Leaving Maidens 'Live After Death' out for 'Powerslave', I think Powerslave is the perfect Album, its recording is epic on every level.

Have Pentagram not got a claim in for the 60s or have I just fabricated that entirely in my own head? I would never be able to pick anything before the 70s either being honest but are we taking the first Black Sabbath as the absolute beginning? Anyway, if it is to be the 70s I'll end up having the first few Sabbath albums and like one from someone else so it's a fair point. Could have the decade done by 73 lol

Vanilla Fudge, Blue Cheer, Steppenwolf - all started in the sixties and definitely had the sound. Proto-metal at worst but I'd have them down as pioneers of the genre. Didn't Priest form in the sixties too or am I imagining that?

I think you are right about Priest, formed late 60s but Rocka Rolla didn't come out until 74 due to a label they signed for going tits up.

So fucking difficult to whittle it down. It changes constantly for me but here's an attempt at the decade by decade list. 'Cos it allows me to pick 25 and not just 5 :P
Definitely gets more difficult with the more recent decade...

Fuck it, I'll go with these

Voivod-Killing Technology
Celtic Frost- Morbid Tales
Slayer-Reign in Blood
Darkthrone- Goatlord
Autopsy- Mental Funeral

Dawn of Possesion and Master of Puppets just missed out, really any Voivod album up to Angel Rat could be in there but KT is probably the one that means most to me as it was the first one I got when I was a child, and Faith No More aren't technically metal, otherwise it would just be Angel Dust x5

Quote from: astfgyl on March 30, 2023, 05:49:26 PMRight I'm just going to go for 5 that influenced me the most, and even at that..

GODFLESH - Streetcleaner
Strapping Young Lad - City
Akercocke - Words That go Unspoken...
Faith No More - King For a Day..
Type O Negative - October Rust

And tonight's bonus ball is

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss.

Impossible

Going back to my own 5 and I'm wondering how Strapping Young Lad got in at the expense of The Downward Spiral and I love Bloody Kisses as much as October Rust and Angel Dust has fairly taken over from King For A Day.

And I've left out so many things I love.

I will try the decade one on paper but I doubt I'll get as far as posting it.

I wonder would top 5 bands without mention of album be any easier? Probably not

Devin Townsend - "Terria"
Mr. Bungle - "Disco Volante"
Nine Inch Nails - "The Downward Spiral"
Type O Negative - "October Rust"
Faith No More - "Angel Dust"
Strapping Young Lad - "City"
Godflesh - "Streetcleaner"
Isis - "Oceanic"
Converge - "You Fail Me"
Neurosis - "Through Silver In Blood"

I think I stand by this.  But I might to the by-decade 5's at the weekend out of curiosity's sake.

That's exactly the way I was thinking about it, like Ministry would have to be there for me but they haven't had a good album in 20 years. NIN also fairly petered out after The Fragile although not as embarrassingly as Ministry but still... Yeah I think it's impossible

I've been trying to whittle my multi decade list to purely 5. It's damn near impossible but also shows that the stuff that got me into metal is still deemed the best there is (in my eyes). I've been revisiting some of these recently for the first time in a while and it's been like having a class new album all over again. Nothing past 1992 on the list either.

Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Megadeth - So Far... So Good... So What!
COC - Blind
Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow
Alice In Chains - Dirt

No room for obscure stuff when limited to 5 only

88-93 is where the real gold is for me (with some notable exceptions) and, yeah, it's that mid-late teen era too. I could live without anything from 94 on, to be honest, but there were still some real gems in 93.

No idea how I would even begin to whittle it down and where to draw the line in terms of which albums are the most important. Appetite for Destruction got me into it all but isn't one I listen to much these days, even though I still love it. Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning and The Black Album the same. How Will I Laugh..., Rust In Peace, Nurse, Dirt, Badmotorfinger... All those 90s classics that are deeply embedded in my soul. October Rust!

Then local classics like Spirit the Earth Aflame, The Sullen Sulcus, Arcane Sun... Geasa demo...

Stormcrowfleet, Stream From the Heavens, Turn Loose the Swans... Cthonic Rites! Times of Grace  ???

Any number of black metal classics and obscurities that have obsessed my mind over the past 15 or 20 years.

Where do you even begin??

Dissection's first album, The Somberlain, is a must too especially if you loved Storm of the Light's Bane. :abbath:

Only had one listen to it so far but It'll be on repeat for the next while for sure. Quite the Christmas album...

You should give Far Away from the Sun by Sacramentum a listen if you haven't heard it. They're similar to Dissection, but are even better in my opinion. Far Away from the Sun is a masterpiece.

And to complete the trifecta, put Dawn - Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triarchy) on that list of things to listen to...

I'd make it a quadfecta (?) and add Vinterland's Welcome My Last Chapter to this elite meloblack list also.

I echo the sentiments for the Somberlain and Dawn - Slaughtersun. Brilliant albums

Never even heard of it. Is it any good or what sort of thing is it? Not mad about Dissection if that makes any difference

It's basically a Dissection worship kind of band formed by the frontman of Obscura , Steffen Kummerer. It can be a bit on the nose at times (not as bad as Gruesome with their Death worship) but if you're itchin for that Dissection kick it'll do the job and to be honest it's very well done.

They have 5 albums at this stage so plenty to assault your ears with. :abbath:

The Spirit from Germany have a few very Dissection sounding albums.

The two 90s Dissection albums are essential imo.

Also it was this week 20 years ago they played Dublin, fuckin unbelievable gig.

I got a couple of Dissection albums off Gooey a few years ago and I only liked Storm... Think it wasn't harsh enough for me at the time but I'm old now maybe I should have another crack at it

Necrohag is on the money above, but I'll add in that I myself am not mad about Dissection, but somehow enjoy Thulcandra more. I'd imagine that's akin to someone not being mad about Judas Priest but enjoying Primal Fear more.

(I'm also of the opinion that Dissection's debut is by far the superior album vs. Storm).

Aye, I also really enjoy this band and should have mentioned them previously. Funnily enough a class hoodie I bought from their bandcamp arrived yesterday morning.

Their new album, Songs Against Humanity, that came out in October is one of my albums of the year.

I'm going to lose 666 kvlt points for recommending this, but Casus Luciferi by Watain is another great album in a style similar to Dissection.

Ninkharsag is another Dissection clone. Hadnt heard of them before they played Damnation last year but went to check them out they were great live

Keep meaning to give their albums a listen since then but still haven't got around to it!

Black Sabbath- Tyr would possibly have earned a spot in my list for tyre amount of times I've listened to it in the past year.

Yeah, I really like their album The Dread March Of Solemn Gods. That 2nd track Under the Dead of Night is a banger. Soooooooo Dissectiony.

Came across a Chinese two man band today called Black Reaper with their album Celestial Descension. A great listen and also in the Dissection vein.

I'd also put forward the album In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead by Unanimated for some more classic melodic black/death.

Seeing as there seems to be a bit of theme going here with Vinterland and Unanimated being mentioned, it might be good to add more of that Swedish, No Fashion records type stuff like the below:

Throne of Ahaz - Nifelheim
Allegiance - Blodörnsoffer
Decameron - My Shadow...
Setherial - Nord...
Lord Belial - Enter the Moonlight Gate
