Some fantastic Irish metal releases in late 2022. Really loving the new Eternal Helcaraxe album "Drown in Ash". Also Nomadus from up north 'Apex Primordial " is well worth a spin.

Knocking great value out of Strangle Wires second album - The Shape Of Human Frailty, here the last few weeks. great pummeling death metal.
Any fear Apostate Viaticum  would put out a second album? Their first -  Before The Gates Of Gomorrah, is fucking brilliant.
A full length from Ten Ton Slug would also go down a treat.

That Strangle Wire album is deadly, alright. No bullshit DM.
Doubt Apostate Viaticum will make a comeback.
Ten Ton Slug are recording a full length at the moment, though.

Nice one man, thanks for the info.
I'll be all over that Ten Ton Slug album.
A full length from Grey Stag would also hit the spot nicely.

I think they're working on one, aren't they. I think Slung From A Tree are announcing an album/E.P. during the week, Rodge is dropping hints through Cursed Monk.

Grey Stag are doing album launch shows in March.
Ten Ton Slug are recording at the moment (judging by their FB).
So ye'll have something good there soon no doubt.

Slung From A Tree have a teaser on the go for an announcement Wednesday, should be something good.
Tooms demoing some things for a release (had a little clip on IG).

There's definitely more, I'll pop them in here as I see them or remember otherwise lol.

Ourselves (Third Island) finishing an EP if that's any interest to ye too.  Meself and Astfgyl have ANTIHUMAN resurrected but ye will be waiting a few months to see the results of that too.

Raum Kingdom have a new release that seems to be going down very well - I haven't listened to it yet but will be on it soon, loved their last few releases.

Dark Matter have an EP out since last month that's excellent, "Phobos/Monolyth", recommended if you enjoyed their earlier stuff.

Molarbear's "You Will Need Gods" out recently too, serious stuff, straight in for the kill riffs and ridiculously catchy metal.

Some great stuff there lads, Molarbear very cool, I like Raum Kingdom too. Listened to the Strangle Wire album over the weekend, pretty relentless DM.

Imperial Demonic are fairly nailing that sound. I can hear CoF in the mix. I hope there's a little more variation in tempo across the rest of the album as endless blasts lose me, but it sounds accomplished.

There's no blasts in the first tune.

Would love a few solos given the style of it but great stuff anyway.

The fact that there is a song called cunts means this has to be like a hammer up the hole and a brick to the face.

Listened to the album last night. A lot of it is really great, couple of passages are genuinely weak, and overall, yeah, their seemingly one and only influence is worn a little too blatantly on their sleeve, right down to the song titles. A band to keep an ear out for though, if they can strike off and mark out a path of their own.

Post by: son of the Morrigan on May 05, 2023, 12:28:00 PM
fuck me!, I actually pretty much agree with BSC on something, thats a first.
I think there's massive potential there.
I don't think its fair to write them off as a "poor mans Mastodon", they do have their own thing going on too like.
Sure if we all took that attitude we would say, (enter modern death/black metal band name here) is just a poor mans (enter old-school death/black metal band name here), nothing new would have any value and we'd all just listen to Death and Venom and poo-poo all newcomers.
Anyway, I think its a banger of an album, fair fucks to them.

Went to their gig last Friday at Fibbers without any expectations as I was craving for raw blastbeats and enjoyed them a lot. Dark Funeral influence is very obvious which might or might not be everyone's cup of tea but they delivered it 100%. Also first time at Fibbers in like 15 years and despite everyone saying it turned into shithole, I found it clean and well organized. Ticket at the door (doesn't exist anymore for Dublin gigs post covid), for a tenner for 3 bands (???), small venue, only about half full which is even rarer these days, pretty much top quality headliner... Couldn't ask for more, full mid-late 00's experience. Also the majority of audience despite being quite young overall was very engaged with the performance which was great to see.

I think there's a bit of a difference with the death/black comparisons.those are fairly wide ranging sub-genres, whereas Mastodon, love them or loathe them, have always been a fairly unique entity in metal. I would have dismissed Grey Stag on the same basis, as the influences are worn a bit too blatantly on their sleeves, but that said I wouldn't have any issue being proved wrong. By the same token, if we're talking about DM etc, I have no real need to listen to Gruesome when I can just listen to Death instead.

I think one of the best explanations I've heard for metal reaching a creative cul de sac, is that every possible chapter has already been mapped out so bands now go and fill in the blank pages. Gruesome are obviously total Death fan fiction, and that's fine by me. I'm not listening to them for innovation and reinvention of a genre but as more of something that I already love. It works because they are completely open and honest about it.
Title: Re: Irish metal thread
Post by: John Kimble on July 27, 2025, 10:27:48 PM
Well yeah, I suppose in fairness to Gruesome they're pretty much upfront about being a Death tribute. Maybe Grey Stag come across as being more derivative, given that they present as a Mastodon clone without explicitly acknowledging this. I dunno, I could be doing them a disservice here. I haven't checked out their stuff in enough depth and maybe I'm just going on a gut reaction.

Just the idea popped into my head to have a thread dedicated to Irish releases then I saw this thread so might be useful for some to know what's been released etc in case things were missed. Will do a post monthly for August onwards next month. If I've missed anything feel free to post it up and I'll add it to the list. Will post bandcamp first, if none I'll throw down the Spotify link. Going to stick to demos/EPs/albums only.

No worries, if anyone thinks I've missed one, message and I'll add it (not going to do singles because way too many so will stick to just demos/EPs/albums).

All these Hollywood Mayhem posts piqued my interest, actually was pretty good. Straight up and cool vocals. Can I ask - is there a story behind the name? I expected a glam band or something I think ha ha.

Weird yeah. I would never have listened to them with that name and what an awful logo to go with it. Just really bad decision making there. The song Witch sounds pretty good in a Black N Roll sort of way.
