It's about time to start looking forward to what's coming out next year. Like last year, this topic helped me keep abreast of stuff in a way I don't manage by myself.
Today I preordered two new albums from Ulthar, to be release together on February 17th. I'm a big fan of the first two albums and there's not too many artists I'd drop 60e on blind but there you go.
I loved the first Ulthar, but found the 2nd one a bit hard to get into. I must try it again some time... I got those two announcements from 20 Buck Spin earlier, just seems a bit mad releasing two separate albums at the same time...
What I'm looking forward to at the moment...
Unto Others - Strength II... Deep Cuts Jan. release.
Oak - Disintegrate (now on Season of Mist like their other band, Gaerea). Feb. release
I believe there will also be releases from Eternal Storm and Officium Triste at some stage 🤞
What's the story with Strength II? Stuff that didn't make the album? A new full length from them would be most welcome. I have yet to pick up the first one actually.
Yeah the band wanted to do a double album, but Roadrunner only wanted to do a single vinyl. So they ended up sliciing it up, but claim it's equally as strong (pun not intended I believe!). They released it for Record Store Day last month, but general release next month.
Mana is fantastic. Nightfall and Give Me the Night absolutely rock :abbath:
New album would indeed be great but I guess this buys them a year after all their touring.
Oh cool, so it's not just demos and odds and sods but all new material. I'll keep an eye out for it.
The 2 eps are available on one disc now as well. It's brilliant.
Nice. I'll have to do a little sweep of that stuff in the new year.
Majesties, new melodeath project announced yesterday again on 20BS.
My disappointment that it takes the place of any new Obsequiae for a while is soothed by how class it sounds.
Essentially Obsequiae and Inexorum coming together to make early/mid 90s In Flames or the like. Looking forward to it.

Yup that's the one. Chap gave me a free ticket and away I went. The lads were sound enough after to chat as well

Great gig!,remember one of the lads met Alan West lost around Heuston station i think.I remember lots of anticipation leading up to this gig,Deicide played around that time too,was a belter of gig also.
Deicide was December 04, I think.
I was at that deicide gig as well it was fucking great. Glen Benton tried chatting up the missus and all
Edit: the support were also great at that gig, anyone remember Arkhon Infaustus? They have one fucking great album
I was at that Obituary gig, yeah. It was fun. They were one of the first death metal bands I got into as a kid so it was good to see them live but I haven't listened to them much over the years. I had a listen to the first song off the new EP the other night and despite it dragging on a bit too long it was pretty damn good.
I think that Deicide gig may have also had Visceral Bleeding on the bill as well as Obituary. They seemed to support everyone for a period.
That year we had Suffocation + Krisiun in the village in November
Deicide + Arkhon Infaustus the village at the beginning of December
Then Dissection and Watain around also in the village around December 12th

Pissed now that I missed Dissection. I never really liked them but before but in recent years I've found myself listening to them from time to time and enjoying their albums. They looked animal live as well. Jon Nödtveidt had a menacing presence.
I was still in school and had already went to Cannibal in April of that year and that Obituary gig so I had to pick either Dissection or Deicide because I had fuck all cash. Picked Deicide thinking Dissection are only back together so they are going to play here loads more times.
Still regret that decision to this day. Other than DOD I don't think Watain have played here since? I remember Darragh was bringing them to the Voodoo Lounge in 2007 but for whatever reason the show never ended up happening.
They were supposed to play with Destroyer at one point but that was also pulled.
Yeah I remember that was when the Destroyer 7" vinyl comp was just out. Show was cancelled either the day of or day before because of the bus if I remember correctly.
Saw Watain in 2018 and walked out half way through they were awful. A very different band from the one that played DOD.

Surprised to hear you didn't like them years back! ,though they would have been right up your ally!.
Ive mentioned it here before, that Dissection gig possibly my all time favourite gig.
I think they were a bit too melodic for my tastes in the past and I let the slip by, but in listening to them now there's a real sense of evil in the riffs that works for me.
Dissection are one if the best to ever do it!

The snippets I heard are decent alright, I hate single track albums though. Even though I generally listen to albums start to finish anyway, there's something about long tracks like that that just bugs me, dunno why.
That being said, Bell Witch's Mirror Reaper is just masterful, so what do I know?

I haven't seen them since they played The Pint. The gig in Whelan's on the Plague Angel tour was class.

Excellent!,love Drowned!.
Are we ever going to get a new Dead Congregation album!?
if we're getting a new Drowned one after almost ten years, I'm sure DC will get round to it eventually..saw something on another forum a few months back about them playing new songs live so it must be underway.I find I really only listen to the first one.
New Stargazer ep sounds cool
https://nuclearwarnowproductions.bandcamp.com/album/bound-by-spells
Looking forward to the Vircolac and Excarnated Entity lps as well. That's my metal quota for the year sorted
Drowned tune is great. Pretty sure I read that there is a DC album recorded but don't quote me on that.
Gave the StarGazer EP it's maiden run this morning, as it happen. Enjoyed it. I'm still to give the last album a proper go but I love the 3 previous ones. Unreal band. Had always liked them but then someone described them as a modern Ripping Corpse and that oddly opened them right up for me.
Vircolac album is a beaut and the 2 EE tunes that have been released are savage so that's def gonna be a highlight.
Looking forward to the me Drowned. It's strange, they songs really unique to me but I can't quite put my fondest on what sets them apart so much as they also sound very traditional. They somehow manage to put their own little spin on things.
The new Vircolac is absolutely savage I think.

It's a combo of decent, considered songwriting and they just have that feel to their work that newer bands rarely have.
The two new songs on that Virc stream from Party San sound cool, I'd imagine the recorded version of that "She is calling" song is whopper alright. Good to see the McConnell riff machine is at full steam
I loved the Drowned debut album. I think it is the riffs they use that make the songs sound so unique.
Listed to the new song once last week and it didn't do anything for me which is not a good sign because I remember when I first heard the rehearsal that came out before the first full length it got me really hyped for the album.
On the back the stargazer EP I see they are playing never surrender fest in Dec, as are volahn who have been very quiet for the last few years. Any word of either band playing elsewhere in Europe? Would love to see either band but dunno if the fest is feasible
Just gonna go to NS. Line-up is savage.
StarGazer are a name I've been meaning to check out for years but seemingly always forgot. I've got A Merging to Boundless on here today, it's fairly stunning. There's flavours of so much going on, not really heard anything like it before. Late to the party, but no harm.
First 3 are all amazing. Only getting around to the last one now.
Bass playing does it for me. the Ripping corpse comparison is intersting actually..they don't sound hugeley alike to these ears but it makes sense, similarly adventurous.
Ya, that was my take on it and they fit in that regard.

Made the financial error of knocking the lady up a few months back so dunno if I'll be able to justify the splurge. Might have to start playing her bands to show what I'd be missing but doubt that would win any votes
Congrats and/or condolences. Ya, December as well so doesn't bode well for ya. I'm sure there'll be one in 2041.
Yup. Congrats on the sprog but in my experience it was 4 years before I went out to a gig after my young lad arrived. To be fair I was burnt out on gigs at that point anyway and was more than happy up retire for a bit. Going to gigs almost weekly for years, it lost its appeal for me, but now the odd gig here and there has become an event again.
Thanks, was unexpected but should be all good. The final stage of acceptance will be when I close all the tabs open on my phone with holidays, records and shirts I was planning on buying!
Congrats!ah you'll be grand, but yeah id hold off any any major purchases for a bit..but next thing you know you'll be 46 and they'll be 19 and talking to you about Type O Negative lyrics

Anyway I see Astral Tomb (the local one) were in the studio with young Shauny of late, looking forward to whatever comes of that. Hopefully it's accompanied by a name change..
Cosmic Grave. All the lads in flares around a space bong.
Cosmic Grave is a better name. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with anyway.

Yeah, had it on 3 times at work last night, it's another notch up from Idol and that's saying something. So easy to hit the replay button at the under 40 running time too. Wish more bands could condense their output a bit more like this. Pure quality throughout. Was straight on to the SoM site this morning to order it.
Didn't quite grab me,can't quite put the finger on why just yet..it felt a bit more 80s influenced or something. Definitely appreciate the fact they're very much doing their own thing and moving forwrd a little with each album rather than repeating themselves though.
I think the new Horrendous is savage. The Title track is the standout for me, what a fucking sick opening riff. The previous track Exeg(En)Esis is very different and interesting too, kinda proggy/spacey shit. With the death metal scene flooded with new releases and new bands I find it hard most the time to find and pick shit worth giving time to check out, over listening to so fucking many archetype releases I already know are brilliant.
But Horrendous are quality enough and stand out enough to have me hooked for a full album listen and buy every time they put one out. One of the better and more well rounded newer death metal bands easily. I think they have a bit of that magic that Morbus Chron/Sweven had/have, like death metal; progressive in the way of where else can we go with this that's not really been explored a lot, over like, just constantly trying to be more brutal or whatever.
Blut Aus Nord release the second part of their Disharmonium trilogy on Friday ,it's already online and it's...extraordinary. Even by BAN standards

The Slayer, Diabolus Tour shirt with the needles through the lips is another resurrection which garners some interesting looks. The response to that one is "don't do drugs kids".
Juggling little people and gigs and a growing vinyl / metal collection / play in a band / keep fit as getting older is a intense!

The BI is grand, weirdly it's the instrumental track that grabbed me more. Feels like this ep is a sort of trial run really, you can hear them melding the death metal and ambient sides more clearly on these tracks.

New Castleumbra out of nowhere. Just on the first song but the bang of both early Cenotaph and Crematory off it has me sucked in already
Starspawn still reigns supreme for me as far as BI go. Same as Jamie, I found the instrumental track slightly more captivating and I had no expectations going into that. See how repeated listens treat it. Cool release.
I'd be fairly confident that they recorded an album while in recording this.
Heard a bit of the Tomb Mold and jumped ship more or less immediately.
Will check out Castleumbra. That sounds right up my alley.
New Tomb Mold very technical compared to previous outputs!
It's their "Human". It's very well done and there's a few tunes I liked but overall I'll stick to the demos. Again though, fair play to them for not just playing it safe.

New album was recorded in July and the artwork is done as far as I know, so it shouldn't be too long.
Did I miss mentioned of the new Autopsy?last one was pretty good, so I'll give this a spin when it's out
New Autopsy is out end of October, enjoyed the last one so will pick this one up as well. Cirith Ungol and Sorcerer have new albums out as well before the end of the year.
Not sure it counts as it's a reissue but there's a 25th anniversary reissue of Devin Townsend's Infinity on the way, inc. bonus tracks, B-sides etc.:

New Judas Priest album 'Invincible Shield out in March, not gone on the title or artwork but the snippet sounds interesting and Firepower was surprisingly good.

It'll be next year, but I'm told there's a new Dead Congregation album nearing completion.
I see Arghoslent have released a new album.
Quote from: Cailleach on October 13, 2023, 06:33:08 PMI see Arghoslent have released a new album.
It is extremely disappointing especially after the 15 year wait.
Only listened to the first 20 minutes or so and thought it was grand. Yet to give it time thought.
I have had the LP since this day last week have listened to it a few times not enjoying it at all. Bad production, new vocalist who does not sound good and of course no lyrics included just like the last GBK.
I didn't mind the production or the vocals on first listen but we'll see. It's odd that they've decided against releasing the lyrics for both alright but I don't care about the lyrics.
Lyrics missing seems to be because of who released the LP. I can understand with GBK because the person in question performs on the album and could be in trouble for that due to where they live if certain topics were mentioned in the lyrics. But I can't see any valid reason other than wanting to distribute it that the Argo lyrics were left out.
Arghoslent have always sucked.
Will be interesting to see if Dead Congregation change it up at all with the new one.
Dream Unending and Worm have a split coming out on 20Buckspin October 20
Mortem - Ravnsvart
Manowar - Sign of the Hammer
Manilla Road - Crystal Logic
Majesty - Sword amd Sorcery
Masterplan - Masterplan
Metalucifer - Heavy Metal Tank
Going to stop going through the Ms now for a bit
Yeah, I think you've overdosed to the point where you've gone in the wrong thread! The M shelf does tend to overshadow most others though, perhaps only S and D can compete.

Ah jaysus are they really doing another pointless re-recording of a classic album??!!
Finally a new VEMOD is to see the light of day in January.
Up for pre-order now on Prophecy.
I wouldn't be one bit surprised if it's the greatest thing ever recorded.
Anata posted some pics the other day, supposedly of vocals being recorded for a now very long mooted "upcoming album."

I saw them live 3 weeks ago they played mostly new material and it sounded great.

EDIT: Can confidently say I won't listen to that again.
Nice. I'll give it a spin later. Beautiful artwork again.
Edit. I had a blast of the first five minutes and I really like the sound of it. That repeating "lead" melody is great, and reminds me of Solitvdo (whose album I need to buy as well). If I have one criticism it's the boring drumming. I think something more subtle and dynamic would elevate the rest of the music rather than that bland, semi-blasty fast pace. But I'll pick this up, although fuck Prophecy and their expensive CD books. I'll bite the bullet and grab the new (expensive) Tenhi CD as well.
Sounds very intriguing on first listen. The melodies are sublime. There's a lot going on but I feel its pointless analysing sound, production, styles etc with Vemod. They exist on a higher musical plane. Like a BM Dead Can Dance.
I'm completely missing whatever ye are hearing. That's just boring post BM shit to me. First album did fuck all for me either but had more character. Maybe I'll eat my words at some point, as is common as day, but that's shit.
Absolutely loved Vemod when I saw them live, but the album did very little for me, and I just wasnt in the humour for that song yesterday but I'll no doubt try again. Absolutely do not hear anything that would class them as a "black metal Dead Can Dance" in their work at all.
Mind you I didn't see the fuss over One Tail One Head's recordings either in spite of the fuss made over them.
I don't hear DCD either but one thing that struck me earlier was how the tone of the guitar sounded inspired by The Cure. I'll give it another listen in a bit.
I'd imagine he meant in the expanse of the music it's similar to DCD.
The OTOH EPs were great and live they were amazing. The album is another one that suffered from it taking far too long to release building up hype that could never be matched. The Beyond Man album from 2021 is really good that band is a continuation of OTOH.
Apparently there's new material coming out from Witchrist. I thought they were finish so this is great news. Word on the street is it's going to be a split with inverloch who I've never heard.
Inverloch are a continuation of, or at least have ex-members from dISEMBOWELMENT.
I thought the Witchrist demo was class. Then Beheaded Orobourous was OK but I wasn't wild on the new singer. The Grand Tormentor was a snooze-fest but I'm wondering if I was listening to it on 33 instead of 45 so maybe I'll revisit it and see, but it bored me to death whenever I put it on in the past. I'll certainly check out the new stuff online and hope for the best. I did enjoy them live with Diocletian many moons ago. In fact, I think WOTH opened that gig.
Fulci's The Morrisound Session up on bandcamp now :-*
I really hope those two new Zemial albums surface soon as well as the project he mentioned with yer man from Absu. So I do.

Not even the old Morrisound could help that band sound good.

Oh cool didn't know about the Disembowelment connection. And yeah definitely give them another go, the two albums are great I reckon, I still play them semi regularly.
