Title: Yuletide Metal Fest
Post by: Pagan Saviour on December 04, 2022, 05:15:02 PM
As discussed in the Belinus thread. Shit turnouts, poor performances but there seemed to be a fair few of these. Definitely seen Primordial one year - they seemed to not be able to get out of the place fast enough which is a complete rarity for them.

I'd love to get a look at the lineups couldn't find much online.

Dont think you will find much info about them, not surprisingly. Hexxed, Mael Mordha, Belinus, Primordial, Aftermath (dont think had become Altus Astrum yet) some of the names, and could be any number of utter shit local bands from the time. Secrets of the moon or whatever called - was their Belfast date one of the Yuletide gigs? I remember seeing them in Rosetta but not sure if one of those nights. Did Waylander play any of them? Do remember their bass player at time possibly got barred one of them nights? Possibly Mourning Beloveth? I remember them playing KatyDalys/Limelight couple times but not yuletide from memory.

Memories are hazy I distinctly remember going to two, they were between Xmas day and New Years right?

The lineups were always good in terms of best of local talent at the time. I think Madder Mortem headlined the other one I went to but again pretty poor.

I was going to say Paradise Lost headlined but that was "Full Metal Racket" and it was April, by Jaysus that was a woeful event, PL were horrendous

Primal Dawn possibly at one as well? Yeah it was sometime round New Years. Not sure bout Madder Mortem - def a few headliners i missed due to the drink.

Possible they cancelled but I do remember their name was in the mix at some point - so hard to recall at this stage.

StandUpGuy, DevilMakesThree, HFC etc etc are some of the other usuals from those times. Who knows, when CT swings by he might fill in the gaps

Madder Mortem didn't cancel; that was the only one of these I went to. Bus was organized from Dublin. I'd a good night and don't remember turnout being poor by any local standards. Was certainly messy as they come though, and yeah, perhaps even messier than most!

Grim turnouts all of them, but standard then really. Im amazed you have no horror stories like your Bush Tavern run after some of the shenanigans that happened at yuletide gigs!! Maybe Madder Mortem year was one of the more sensible ones? Who else on that year do you remember? Rosetta different craic altogether

Great, not losing my mind so. Can remember very little of the performance. I don't remember the turnout being good though, not much more than 100.

I bought Madder Mortem - Desiderata back in 06. Pretty sure it got a 5/5 on MI. Really enjoyed it depaite it being something I wouldn't usually go for. Must give it a lash again.

I have one of their albums too. The name escapes me. CT used to bang on about them a lot so I checked them out. There was one song that was exceptional but the rest went in one ear and out the other. I might root it out for a reappraisal.

I had the same buzz with The Gathering. I bought Nighttime Birds and loved the opener,  On Most Surfaces, but the rest was pure grand. I revisited it a couple of weeks ago and had much the same experience. I think I heard that one on The Metal Show back in ze day.

Ah yes Dominus! I remember being on gig with them in Letterkenny (i think!) along with Abbadon Incarnate, DevilMakesThree, Dawn (not THAT Dawn!) and others. Sound guys. Most of the bands ended up in some random field, starting a bonfire and getting baked/pissed that night. Woke up in said field after sleeping in Jason Bariskills car, lit up a special rollie surrounded by cows!! Farmer was NOT happy. Actually unearthed Dominus slipcase demo thingy from round that time recently.

Was on the bus from Dublin too. Turnout was so so. I think For Ruin played too. A messy night indeed.

She Said Destroy (Norway)
Fallen (Belfast)
Wreck of the Hesperus (Dublin)
Mass Extinction (Dublin)
Chosen (Dublin)

And another

Yuletide Metal Meeting 5

Rosetta Belfast Dec 28

Madder Mortem
For Ruin
Skies Collide
De Novissimis
Overoth

Now that I've the lineup in front of me I do remember bits and bobs from the event. I thought Skies Collide were band of the night, I saw them a good few times that year. Really thought they were going places then it all just fizzled out.

Some decent, but long since gone bands on those later yuletide gigs. I thought his highness cathal and woth had been on one of them. De Novissimis as well?

Yeah. Didn't realise Photobucket were doin that. It's 'Dominus' under that watermark. 2002 I think that was. I have the Bealtaine flyer that Secrets of The Moon played but half the bands on the flyer were replaced. SOTM wern't even on the original line-up.

Yeah, Sinister Demise were good stuff. Played with them quite few times - they done great cover of Suffocation 'Habitual Infamy'. Niall is very sound lad. Them and Dominus only two bands worth attention that night. Primordial didnt want to be there, Old Season on a drunk one and hexxed live always very flat.Funny that the poster proclaims 'The Metal lineup of the year'! Things were bad then obviously!
Title: Re: Yuletide Metal Fest
Post by: Pagan Saviour on December 05, 2022, 11:29:41 AM
I remember all the Sinister lads being sound alright, two great EPs, shame they never did more.

I'd agree with that full assessment except maybe Hexxed, they could be flat live but when firing on all cylinders they were untouchable. They played Doran's here around 2004 and I thought they blew everyone off the stage that night, Primordial included.

Luckily seen them quite a few times, Katatonia support in Dublin in 2003 was another highlight, maybe a tad ill matched for the vibe of the gig but they were utterly ferocious.

They musta just went through motions anytime they played Belfast then (kinda understandable round them times)! Always heard about great shows from them at DOD, Fibbers, Katatonia etc. then would see them in Rosetta/Katys/AuntAnnies and be utterly underwhelmed! Made sure and 'supported the scene' though, buying cds, shirt etc lol

I did see them in the Rosetta on another occasion (Can't remember who they were supporting) but there was about 25 people there and that was definitely a flat night. Did they need the big crowd in order to deliver? The Desaster and Katatonia shows were rammed.

Could well have been the case. They morphed through lineups and styles a fair bit from pretty early which could have been part of the hit/miss live thing?

Few ones i unearthed recently from round that period

That Sol Axis is awesome, SD great too.

Sol Axis and SD were two class bands indeed it's a shame both fizzled out before they could really get going. Would particularly have loved to hear more from Sol Axis

I don't have that Aftermath CD but if it's the lads I'm thinking of a kind of Black/Death/Thrash band? They were kinda cumbersome but then evolved into Altus Astrum which were a much more fully realised project.

Mick Flynn was lucky he didn't answer the knock in his bedroom door!!

I think we were locked out of the room after that so we went on a wander down to the ground floor in the lift but didn't venture too far into the lobby :o

I remember the taxi base next to the venue after, doing the Office Dance and tune, singing The Boys of Fairhill (lucky that wasn't taken up wrong), and waiting an age for a taxi as they kept on giving them to locals first. Eventual Taxi driver then suggested bringing us to a piano bar to round off the night??
