Title: Noise Rock
Post by: John Kimble on January 05, 2019, 06:53:19 PM
I had started a thread on this on Metalireland, and many of you were gracious enough to give me some great recommendations, but alas, MI is no more and I neglected to take note of much of what was offered. Oops, my bad. Anyway, please feel free to make some suggestions as to decent Noise(y) Rock offerings in the mould of classic AmRep material. Contemporary is preferable as I'm familiar enough with older stuff of this ilk, but that said, I may have overlooked some gems in the past so feel free to throw in whatever tickles your fancy...

Really impressed with the standard of irish noise rock over the last few years - would love to see them play alongside metal bills as they seem to have their own isolated scene, gigs in Dublin are usually in Whelans, Drop Dead Twice or Bellobar.

Shifting and Gummidge, two Irish bands that did a split together who are class IMO:

Shifting side of split: https://shifting.bandcamp.com/track/voted-most-popular (https://shifting.bandcamp.com/track/voted-most-popular)

Gummidge side of split: https://gummidge.bandcamp.com/ (https://gummidge.bandcamp.com/)

Shithatt are unreal too: https://shithatt.bandcamp.com/ (https://shithatt.bandcamp.com/)

and these boyos: https://vaticanii.bandcamp.com/releases (https://vaticanii.bandcamp.com/releases)

There's a lot of cross over of band members in these bands!

Gummidge and Vatican II are great alright. Shithatt always just struck me as more of a straight up grunge/Therapy? style thing than noise rock per se but they're cool, haven't actually heard Shifting but it's Matt from No Spill Blood/Hands Up so I really should.

I wouldn't have thought there's much of a scene for this kinda thing here really though. Are Crowhammer still going? They were pretty good

Sorry haven't logged in on this for ages! Aye Crowhammer are still going. Caught a gig of there's in Whelans back last May!

No Spill Blood and Hands Up Who Wants to Die, two savage bands in that scene. I would definitely consider it a sort of scene unto itself, usually a pretty good turnout at any of those gigs. A4 Studios seem to be another spot they play. The 'Scene' from what I gather,  is comprised of a lot of the bands that record in Guerilla Studios in East Wall.

Some other class bands that would be in the irish noise rock scene would be:

Ten Past Seven  - https://tenpastseven.bandcamp.com/album/highest-bands-in-ireland-split-7in (https://tenpastseven.bandcamp.com/album/highest-bands-in-ireland-split-7in)

Video I took at one of their gigs about two years ago, hopefully they get into the studio to record this stuff:

Jogging - https://jogging.bandcamp.com/ (https://jogging.bandcamp.com/)

Ger Mangan is on drums with the two last bands, unreal drummer!

Guilty Optics - https://guiltyoptics.bandcamp.com/ (https://guiltyoptics.bandcamp.com/)

Ireland - Not really a noise rock band, but will play at some of the gigs, sometimes play random gigs up in Anseo. Can't find any links. Catch them live if you get the chance!!

Callous Crows - Big fan of these. On the grungy side of things, wouldn't be part of the scene at all, just two young lads around 20 or 21 who are really talented. They'll sometimes play gigs in Whelans or The Underground, and sometimes Fibbers. Awesome band to watch live, 2 members is all they need. Their latest release was class:
https://callouscrows.bandcamp.com/album/daisy-brain
(https://callouscrows.bandcamp.com/album/daisy-brain)

There's probably some other bands I can't think of at the moment, will post here at some point when they come to me.

While most do record in Guerilla most of them also share a practice space with us (Wild Rocket) next door. We also share a rummer with Hands Up who Wants to Die who are also now fronted by the guitarist from Ten Past Seven. Incestuous stuff.

Jamie's new band Electricals will be worth catching when they start gigging.

Would people here count Girl Band as noise rock?

Just confirmed for Siege of Limerick in October. Figuring out recording currently, should have a little demo up mid summer. If anyone wants to hear stuff in the meantime I'll happily fire on practice recordings

I listened to Brainbombs last night for the first time which was quite the experience.  Not at all what I was expecting.  I enjoyed two songs but not sure if I'd survive an album. Very unique sound.

Re Brainbombs I recommend checking out this album for more variation and accessible riffs. For the opposite direction for more minimalism check out No Balls.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cv41-OcVAXM

Also worth checking is the drummer from the two above bands new project Orchestra of Constant Distress, more blown out sound wise but still got the repetition.

Lastly USA/Mexico are amazing too, drummer from Butthole Surfers and the lad from Shite and Shine.

Electricals are hitting the studio in September with Steve Caffrey of Destriers. Should have some music online well before Siege.

Seeing as I mentioned it in the "Now Playing" thread, new Cherubs is ace

Saw Hands Up Who Wants To Die last week in Cork. Amazing gig. Rory from Ten Past Seven was on vocals/lamp swinging

God Alone played a fucking blinder (as usual) on support.

Shit band. I've never understood their status as "legendary" beyond the SJ connection. A lot tamer than they're made out to be. Give me Slab or Splintered any day over them.

Caught a bunch of UK noise rock/punk bands in Margate last week.  First time seeing Bodies On Everest, Shuck and Bloody Head and all three blew me away. Vile Sect  and Black Shape were also great. Bismuth, Luminous Bodies and Cosmic Dead were amazing too but not noise rock.

Have Rainbow Grave been mentioned in here? Ex Napalm Death and Doom but sound nothing like either, more Brainbombs/Drunk In Hell buzz.

If you're gonna claim any band let alone Metz are the be all and end all with a "that is all" statement you can expect a sarcastic response. Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

Very impressed with Hissing Tiles at the moment. Night quite the full on riff assault of some of the bands in here, kinda more reminiscent musically of something like Girl Band or Daughters with a young Scott Walker on vocals.
https://hissingtiles.bandcamp.com/album/boychoir

And the name reminds me of the short lived but deadly Hissing Choir - singer from PIg Destroyer and some Pg99 lads pretending to be "Cop" era Swans. This track is absolutely bludgeoning, shame they never released anything.

I have absolutely no idea where on this board to post this, I'm certainly not starting a thread  as it's not metal, or hijacking one of the "Irish filth" thread as others have done, and it's probably more of a post-hardcore thing than anything else but I'm doing this now:

http://hsji.bandcamp.com

we've been described as somewhere between Cave In and Dinosaur Jr. "Fangs and a Cape" is probably the song that best fits this thread.

12" called "Have You Ever Been A Crow..Or Eel?" out before the end of the year

Also, not sure if this is proper "noise rock" either but it's on TGIC (the modern day Noise Rock mecca, just put out the Chat Pile/Nerver split) and it's great:

Metz are going on 'indefinite hiatus':

Quote"Our upcoming EU/UK Tour will be our last," they wrote on social media, "We've collectively decided to close this chapter of Metz. The band will be on 'indefinite hiatus' while we take time to focus on other endeavours and enjoy more time at home with our families."
