A new Destroyer 666 single is coming out and I can't say it's done much for me but I had 'Phoenix Rising' on earlier for the first time in years and there's no denying that the earlier stuff from this mob was something ferocious, powerful, epic and deep. They had a real aura on the records up to 'Cold Steel... For an Iron Age'. I have the 'Terror Abraxas' 12" that I often see people praise highly but it's one that never clicked with me. I'll revisit it. I have 'Violence is the Prince of This World' but am unfamiliar with it, which I really should rectify. But 'Unchain the Wolves', 'Phoenix Rising' and 'Cold Steel...' are something else. They are black thrash, but so much more at the same time. Truly the product of a band with vision, history and a real underground spirit. Kind of similar to how I'd view Primordial up to 'Storm Before Calm' in a way, despite sounding nothing alike. Maybe the connection is purely down to seeing them both live in the early 00s- my introduction to Destroyer 666. Their later stuff doesn't have the same obscure feeling despite being alright and the gig they played a couple of years back in Voodoo was fucking savage, so they still have some kind of black magic running through their veins!
Who loves them? Who hates them? Let's go!
Unchain the Wolves is the only one I have from them, thought it was great but never dove into the rest of the catalogue for some reason
The new song popped up on YouTube for me the other day though, it's a catchy enough number
'Unchain the Wolves' is probably their pinnacle. Aggressive, obscure, epic and challenging.
New one is pretty good. I have to agree though, those three you've mentioned are crackers. The 'Terror Abraxas' one gets a lot of kudos, IMO, because of the track 'Trialed by Fire' which is one of their best choons.
No real duds since CSFAIA, but that earlier spark has dimmed somewhat.
I am still hoping the new single is KK trolling absolutely abysmal stuff. The last EP was terrible as well.
Everything up to Terror for me is amazing. Terror is good but it took a long time to warm up to it as you said I can't understand the high praise it gets. Defiance and the previous album are not great. When Shrapnel left I think the band lost an essential element.
Unchain the wolves is one of the greatest albums of all time. I can't see how anyone into this type of music could not like that album after giving it a fair try.
The biggest problem I have with the new one is that the main riff sounds far too much like Sum 41s 'The Bitter End'
Only ever managed to catch them live the one time when they played in Dolans a few years back. Immensely powerful live band. Really adds an extra ferocity to the songs.
I barely even got round to giving Wildfire proper attention, must get on that. Quality band with some truly vicious albums.
Phoenix Rising and Cold steel are stone cold classics.
I love most of their stuff but those two are peak D666 for me!

Absolutely. Incredible album in every aspect. The songwriting, lyrics, the sheer hate that emanates from it.
I think Defiance is quite underrated. A lot cleaner than the older albums for sure, but its D666 through and through. Wildfire is a complete ripper too.
One of the most consistent bands still on the go. Have yet to hear the new EP or the last one for that matter, but I enjoyed See You In Hell. The compilation of all the split and 7" tracks, To The Devil His Due, is well worth picking up.

I have been meaning to revisit 'Defiance' as it didn't do anything for me when it came out. I'll stick it in the car next week. I stuck 'Wildfire' on earlier and it is enjoyable in its own right, I just think the early stuff is more iconic.
Phoinex Rising is probably my favourite. After getting a warning I'm another thread I'll listen to the new one before ordering. I like Wildfire and Call of the Wild too.
Christ that single is desperate. If it represents what the rest of the album sounds like I won't be touching it.
Wildfire didn't have the longevity of their earlier stuff, but Tamam Shud is as good a song they've written
Yeah that song is absolutely killer.
Have Phoenix Rising on now, every single song a banger!.
Jaysus that Guillotine song is woeful
Love them - even though I only discovered them a few years ago. I don't think they've ever really done a bad album.
Are the Guillotine lyrics meant to be some kind of commentary on D666 controversies?
I'm not gone on Wildfire. It doesn't have any stand out songs, which every other album does have. Trialed by Fire is a class song, alright. I love hearing it live.
I wrote a real glowing review for it (Wildfire) on the old Metal Ireland. It felt really exciting at the time I recall, like Judas Priest on speed in parts, but it hasn't lived in the memory at all. Some real duds on there that were overlooked/given a pass too I have to assume.
Last album I liked was cold steel .. got a bit samey after that .like most bands of that style

Another new song not amazing by any means but far better than the previous preview track.
This sounds like something that wouldn't have made the cut for the newest Destruction album
At least it's not as bad as the other single. Sounds somewhat like Destroyer 666 even if it's a poor parody of older stuff. Think I'll be skipping this one.
Anyone been reading the Bardo Methodology series of interviews? Absolutely killer insights, great laughs, total candid stuff from all involved in the band and extended parties. Superb reading. Some band back in the day.
Yeah really good. I'm a bit confused about the paywall setup with Bardo now. Do you get the full interviews if you buy the mag or are they only available online if you subscribe to the website?
Yeah have been reading it, great anecdotes. Loving the the most recent d666 album too - a gig over here would be great.
Yep been reading them,Loved the Gospel of the Horns one.

Not sure exactly how it works either, I haven't bought a hardcopy since #3 I think. Must rectify that. But I subscribed for 3 euro a month to get the full interviews of D666 and GOTH.
Wildfire was OK as far as I remember. Doesn't stick in the mind at all.
The classic three are great stuff even if I did always have a problem with the drums on Phoenix Rising - I remember there being some conjecture about whether it was a drum machine or Electronic Drums dubbed on top of an original performance that wasn't up to the mark.
New piece up on BM Facebook page ,covering the D666/Revenge tour in 2006.
Here's a random one.
I have been working as a grave digger (two years to the day today incidentally) and today we had a mausoleum job on. I was told there would be a violinist there. Grand.
I head in before the service to make sure everything is ready to go and the dude is there warming up. I get yapping to him and the discussion takes an inexplicable metal turn. God knows how :P !
He says, back in the 90s I recorded violin for some metal bands. One of them was, what was it again... Destroyer Sixhundredansixtysix.
Destroyer 666??? No fucking way! Turns out he played on Genesis to Genocide from Unchain the Wolves!
Oh and there was adoom band... Paramaecium!
I'm like, yep, I know them too. Haha.
I was buzzing about it and he was buzzing too. Two little random jobs he did decades ago are still remembered in the metal world. Nice 8)
Thats mad!!!!
What a cool random connection!
Haha yeah, the metal gods must have been smiling on me today 8)
Haha, great story! Alas, poor Paramaecium! I knew them Horatio!
Ah that's class :abbath:
Nice :abbath:
Pretty cool one there indeed, random as fuck
Off to Osaka for NWN/Hospital Fest on Saturday and Sunday. Pity Mithrandir sold out, cut his hair, started wearing X Worx jeans and a Naff jacket and traded in his metal collection for a rare Mr. Blobby 12" :'(

I am a false so I didn't entry 😥
Waiting in Cairns airport for the next few hours to get the 7 hour extension flight. Is it too late to become a false??
Cairns..... I loved that place, enjoy.
Its possibly too late you for you, do they still make X Work?
Man what a bad time in music!!!!!
McLove's Ill fated handshake faux pa just reminded me of an embarrassing metal encounter I had a while back. I was getting tattooed by SimonTurner/Berserker - having the usual metal chats, Aussie bands, was asking him about Assaulter.. etc Never Surrender had just come out and I asked him did he know the D666 lads... "umm yeah, I was in the band" :-[ don't know how I managed to not put the 2 together. Thankfully he also thought the newest album sucked or that would have been had both my feet in my mouth
 I've gotten to know Simon over the past year or so. We meet up the odd time and go hill walking and metal talking. He's a gas dude. Totally chilled out and a complete piss-taker like the rest of us. He would see the funny side of your faux pas.
Cool! Yeah he seems like a sound lad alright.
