Any fans of any recent bands playing in the old school style? I recently discovered Skeletal Remains and Undeath who are ticking the right box's for me anyway. Really catchy well written old school stuff. I'm liking Gatecreeper too who I look forward to seeing this weekend.
All fab bands there, although some here would disagree! Going mad I can't make Gatecreeper this weekend.
One recent beast I've only discovered the past few months is Moulder. First album out 2 years ago:
https://rottedlife.bandcamp.com/album/vanished-cadavers
Second album due on the 15th:
https://molderil.bandcamp.com/album/engrossed-in-decay
Really scratches my itch anyway.
Didn't mind the first Undeath album, the most recent one didn't do much for me. Morbific are great as well, and there's a few others, but in general there's too many of them and they are interchangeable.
Think i'd rather just listen to actual 90s bands than copies of them at this stage but as with anything there's always a few worthwhile out there. Overall though 90% of the current wave of US and (particularly) UK bands need to fuck off. Not sure if by "old School" you particularly mean the Roadrunner Florida/TriState type thing which is what the bands you mention bring to mind, so maybe some of these might be a little off the mark but...
Conjureth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCdffSKivto&t=434s
Occulsed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTKMweMiIZs
Still not 100% sure what to make of this band Phobophilic but this new song sounds infinitely better than their demo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwd2deLmwQ8
Dismebodiment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfHP9BAS2ug (the video is spectacularly bad, the tune's okay)
This Vilespawn demo might be up your alley https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmo1uhIkjZI
Corpsessed probably will too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMcYWMWxyfg
more "Euro" sounding stuff
Mvltifission sound like they could have been on Drowned productions. Great band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iA_MB1lhd64&t=385s
I've a soft spot for Coffin Mulch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTsvifoI2wg Absolutely nothing original, might be biased cos I know one of them, but they do the old school Swedish thing well
Sedimentum definitely scratch the "Realm of Chaos"/Demilich itch for me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SGwMv8vadk
Listened to a bit of Vilespawn the other day. Sounded cool. Been meaning to go back to Mvltifission since last year, I think. The rest look exactly like shit I'd just skip over but given it's your recommendations Mr Grimes I'll have a look.
Haha, kind of you to say Matt..geared more towards the OP than my personal taste in some instances but you'll certainly get a laugh out of the sheer cringe of that Disembodiment video at least
Haha. Pretty sure I've actually seen this video before. Yer man's Ironbird is a beaut. Tune is a non runner for me, as is everything else posted bar the two I already mentioned.

By Old School I meant 80s/ 90s Death Metal. I'll check out those there for sure. Nice one

Gruesome
Madrost
Gruesome are cool, really annoyed I didn't get to see them as the gig here got cancelled due to covid. Hopefully they will tour again
Love Skeletal Remains.
I know some people cant stand the Death worship with Gruesome, but It doesn't bother me!,im a massive Death fan anyway.
The likes of DTA and Left to die annoy the fuck out of some people, but its all a bit of craic as far as im concerned.
If you;re going for straight up 90s tribute bands then Pharmacist's new one is basically the album Carcass should have made between "Necroticism" and "Heartwork"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Piffstt71U
Ectoplasm definitely sound pretty 90s to me. Not my thing but you may enjoy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djutHU8LD2s
That band Madrost...pretty sure I reviewed them for MI years ago and the singer posted some diva-esque rant bullshit online because I said something he didn't like about the album. So fuck them.
Got to have a bit of Gruesome then, even with an old school video

Listening to Mefitis here today. Definitely death metal that sounds like it could have come out of Sweden in the 90s, so worth mentioning here.
I'd go out on a limb and say they're better than any of the bands mentioned in this thread. For me anyway.
You'd be right though.
I would. haha. Been meaning to go back to Offscourings as well so perfect timing. Cracker of an album. It always reminds me to put on Temisto as well.

Surely this category would include Necrot & Tomb Mold

Mighty indeed!!!
Huge bang of 80s Crust off that , which isn't a surprise given how much a lot of those bands worshipped at the altar of Warrior . Sounds fairly medicore tbh.
Ah..ex-Doom and Police Bastard... That makes sense.
Lads I'm no clearer on what exactly the original poster is looking for here. Undeath don't sound particularly "old school" to me. Are we just recommending death metal in general or what? By my reckoning this is the best "old school" death metal demo in recent years anyway, absolutely sounds like something Quirkey would have taped me in the 90s. Utterly brutal.

This is a fantastic thread
Ya, even though I happened to be listening to them same day as Mefitis, and even though they absolutely rule, I wouldn't have thought to put Tomb Mold in here. But sure, why not. If we want to get loose on what we're calling old school DM, Horrendous to my ears have been doing Necroticism/Heartwork era style Carcass... and doing it better than the reformed Carcass themselves.
It's a kind of meaningless term in someways cos the best death metal is just death metal..I've seen the term "Old School" used to cover everything from 90s HM2 Nihilist rip offs to bands that sound like Necrovore/Morbid Angel 80s style Satanic Thrash to bands that purposely ape 90s bands off Roadrunner/Earache. I do associate the term with bands who generally don't have a whole lot going on beyond nostalgia though.
Anyway, much of a muchness. The main thing here is that we're all clear that Mefitis are amazing. Sure we may as well mention the other best American Gothenburg band currently:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1bbNID9NQg
Tomb Mold, Gatecreeper all good. Dream Unending very cool also but not typical DM
I liked that Dream Unending album on first listen, must go back to it. On a similar vein, Enchantment - who are actually "Old School" given they put out a record on Peaceville 28 years ago - have a new one out that I really like, and if the 90s Peaceville Three or the Dream Unending album are up your street, you might dig it. Melodic, slightly flowery doom death that could have come out in the 90s but still sounds good to me. Many of you will hate it I suspect ;)
https://enchantmentuk.bandcamp.com/album/cold-soul-embrace
Jesus, Enchantment, that takes me back. I had their first album (on Century Media I thought?), didn't think much of it at the time but I like the sound of that new one, must give it a proper listen.
It's far better than the debut.
I have to give that new Enchantment a proper spin.
Get your hanky ready Andy, there's a few weepy moments.
Bonus if anyone spots the 80s pop song they stole one of the riffs from too.
Disclaimer: I cannot fucking hack this band at all but they may be of use to those of you who like the two bands named in the first post, or polished US mosh death metal if the Suffocation/Internal Bleeding/Pyrexia short hair and big shorts kind.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ggc41OvRLDw
Century Media really are useless nowadays when it comes to recent Death Metal signings.
I am all for weepy doom.
Can't leave this thread go by without mentioning Malignant Altar. What a tasty drummer.

Cerebral Rot,another OS monster of a band with some brilliant recent releases.
Looking forward to seeing Cerebral Rot live, but tbh I only need the first LP and the demo that came after it, the second one is more of the same but less interesting. Very much a one trick pony to these ears.
Going back to my MA/Necrovore mention in the earlier post, surely Omegavortex would a better example of bands in that style. I really should pick up a physical copy of this album at some stage.
https://invictusproductions666.bandcamp.com/album/black-abomination-spawn
and Ensnared of course too
https://invictusproductions666.bandcamp.com/album/inimicus-generis-humani
'Oul Daz had some knack for finding decent bands in that vein there for a while.
As far as IP and Necrovore/MA vibe, Malicious also fit the bill as do Tempter's Sacrament, Hideous Death, Hecatomb and Abhorration. Grave Infestation then also suit the osdm tag.
Total Leprosy / From beyond worship...
https://youtu.be/sm_W31w8w1k (https://youtu.be/sm_W31w8w1k)
Terrible band name, but some pretty good Pestilence/Death sounding stuff...

Just checked and the new 2nd album is still for sale?
Ah, it is too. Have to really give them the time now. Sound!
Lots of good bands mentioned already.
I rate Ossuary too. I've played their 'Supreme Degradation' EP to death. Really miserable death with a bit of doom. Might appeal to any 'Mental Funeral' fans. I see they are touring Europe later this year with Innumerable Forms and Faceless Burial, which sounds like a fun lineup.
Thinking of which, I really enjoyed that Innumerable Forms album from a few years back. Nothing particularly revolutionary about it but just perfectly executed.
And yeah, I am particularly looking forward to that Sedimentum album. The band shares members with Outre Tombe (who are great if you just want headbanging Morgoth / Bolt Thrower stuff) but has a bit more to them in terms of originality. Teaser track they put out sounds great.
Nah, Ossuary cancelled. There's a package with two tapes and a shirt stuck somewhere in the gaping abyss that is the Irish Postal System belonging to me now for two fucking years. Cursed band.
fInnumerable forms are still over though, looking forward to seeing them at Tones of Decay, they've just been added.
Regarding Enchantment, for anyone that's interested Marc has his own YouTube channel reviewing stuff...'Marc G with a C' will get ye there..
