Title: Borknagar Debut Remaster
Post by: Caomhaoin on December 06, 2021, 07:02:36 PM
This is probably my favourite metal album of all time, so I struggled to keep the knickers dry before I got hold of this. The wonky production, ADHD drumming and smashing so many ideas on to an album that only has five real choons, I loved it from day 1.

Remaster is grand, and for anyone unfamiliar with this gem should become familiar.

I don't have that one so I'll have to pick up the reissue. From what I've listened to of it it sounds overall more ferocious and raw than The Olden Domain. But I'm not very familiar with it.

Yeah much less polished.

It's just bursting at the seams with riffs, totally inventive drumming and simple joie de vivre.

This sounds class. Never gave enough time to this band for some reason. This style of BM is timeless, raw and powerful without overdoing the progressive elements. Like early DHG before they got too far into the mushies.

Always likes The Olden Domain so must give this a go.

Interested in hearing this.
The first two albums are epic, Garm's vocals are also great on this album.

The first album of theirs I got was Origin. What a thundering load of shite that was. I saw them live the same year looking and sounding like an indie band. I have such a massive downer on them that I don't think I'd be able to give this a chance.

No comparison Mick. I don't enjoy any of their other releases bar a couple of songs, yet this is the most cherished metal album I have. It's quality. Listen to that song I linked above.

Empiricism was the first I heard by them and it's a really good album. The recent one, North, is cool as fuck too, particularly the song Up North which is an epic catchy masterpiece. There are several albums in between that I haven't heard.

The debut is actually quite boring I always found.

Never listened to them but I've heard they're fairly similar to Enslaved in terms of going from black to proggy?

Not proggy as such, I'd guess you'd call it refinement in the way a modern Porsche is more refined than the 80's 911. The latter is still a timeless fannymagnet with way more character though.

Ah sure I'll start with debut and go from there, see how it grabs me

That 'Up North' song of the new one is indeed a belter as mentioned. Can't go wrong with any Borknagar though.

I've been listening to this album on a regular basis since picking up the reissue a year or so ago. It took me a little while to adjust to the harsh production which initially masks a fair amount of the subtleties. Perseverance is the key with this one. I am really into it now; it's a ripper.
