Title: The Blues
Post by: ldj on December 29, 2018, 11:03:53 PM
Any fans of blues music?

When I was a kid I always gravitated towards blues influenced hard rock but recently I've been delving into the blues genre properly, it has a pretty huge history so it comes in many forms.

I've been listening to a lot of Howlin' Wolf recently, specifically the Moanin' at Midnight album, he has an amazing voice.

I was never big on it until about 15 years ago. A mate of mine had a blues band and I'd sub for them whenever they lost a bassist. Learning their set gave me a good appreciation of what I like about it and what doesn't do it for me. Freddie King does it for me, particularly around the Texas Cannonball>Burglar era. That scuzzy funk he added is very much to my tastes.

Most of the electrified Chicago stuff hits the spot, to be honest, particularly from the 70's. It's a much maligned music form, due to the amount of middle-class white lads who see it as a means to wank over. Joe Bonamassa, for example, I simply do not believe his blues at all. He's fine as a rock guy in BCC but, playing blues, he's as authentic as a Chinese Gibson. Lots of great stuff out there though, for sure.
