Title: Solstice v. Solstice
Post by: Eoin McLove on December 21, 2018, 08:16:42 AM
21st of December is upon us and we begin the long march back to summer.  OK,  the weather tends to get worse from here till March or April, and sometimes even May, but the days begin to gradually stretch out and by February signs of life start to appear in the hedgerows.

I like winter but there's no denying it can make working outdoors a massive challenge so hitting the mid-point is always a positive experience. Summer solstice brings more of a sense of an ending for me.  The summer is on the fizzle (despite the weather often getting better in late summer) and it's back into cold darkness.

The older I get, the more significance these two events hold, moreso than new years eve,  which is generally just a pain in the hole.

Tonight I will crank up some doom and drink a few beers.

That seems to be the way most folks look at it, though personally I prefer the shorter days. The summer solstice is when I celebrate things beginning to move in my direction again!

yeah I'm with you there. I always get the pure new beginning buzz after the winter solstice and the summer one gives me that ending feeling. I will also celebrate tonight with cans and tunes..

Aye, have the solstice cans going again.  It was too overcast for the lovely looking late dusk though, what a downer.

Yesterday was a beautiful sunny summers day and come evening it gave way to dark, rain-laden clouds of gloom, suitable enough metaphor for the ending of summer and slow march back to winter misery!

Having about 15 people around tonight for the Summer Solstice party
It's looking dry so should be out in the back garden most of the time. We have no neighbours (vacant) either side of us so should be good for tunes till the early hours.

Jaysis lads talk about making something miserable out of the height of Summer  it's only the longest day, there's plenty more sun left in it yet.
