Title: Fistful of Metal (New Magazine)
Post by: Thorn on March 03, 2021, 05:40:19 PM
Only heard of this last week and ordered it, landed today and first impressions are good . Just good to have a new print mag out there . This first issue with Motorhead on the cover features Enslaved, Heathen, Death S.S., Necrophobic, Raven, Hammerfall, Armored Saint  etc. etc. , nearly 100 pages long.
Don't know if it's available in Easons or wherever but definitely looks worth the tenner to get it in yer letterbox. I dread the day we've no print mags left so hopefully people can get behind this endeavour.

I have seen it on the shelf in the shop where I buy ZT these days and it looks awful. I mean,  Motorhead on the cover? Death SS?? I wondered if it was some kind of reboot of Iron Fist made on half the budget. I don't get the point of these nostalgia magazines at all. I'll stick with Zero Tolerance.

Do ya get a CD with it for your tenner?

No Cd no, that's a tenner including postage though. Who needs promo cds these days anyway?
And re putting Motorhead on the cover for a first issue ,I mean ,c'mon, you want to draw in the widest fan base possible if you're putting your hard earned time, effort and finances in early doors, who would you, realistically think they could have put on the cover Andy? I don't own a single Motorhead album but I can understand  the benefit of having Lemmy on your debut edition cover that will be displayed on High Street shelves. Too retro like Iron Fist? Fuck that, I'll take that over having solely  ZT as print fodder these days.

I hated Iron Fist in the end and just stopped buying it.  It was all style but fuck all of relevance. It had a very hipster retro feel to it with the amount of focus it gave to historic acts over new and active bands. The writing had a very matey matey style that really got on my tits. It was all about who the editor knew. It at least looked sharp.

The front cover of this new mag looked like total shit to me.  A blurry picture of a band that is now gone with a very weak colour scheme and messy layout. I had a glance at the bands featured and just thought... why? I'm all for featuring classic bands and retrospective write ups on important scenes but when 50% of the bands had their heyday in the 80s, and some are no longer in existence I can't help but think it's a load of bullshit. The whole retro 80s schtick is bollocks for hipsters with mullets who'll 'outgrow' metal in 5 years but will want to look as sexy as possible on Instagram in the meantime. Pass.

Jesus the new issue has even more of a focus on the 70s and 80s. Cuntish.

Yeah I get it, we'd all love a new mag with our favourite underground darlings bathed in blood on the cover but it's a Metal mag. On the shelves. In 2021.

Yeah, fair enough, I just see it as being boring and predictable. Black Sabbath on the cover of the new issue. Judas Priest on the next one no doubt.  Then Maiden. Then Mercyful Fate. Then Metallica,  Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy etc etc... Not for me.

Who is the editor out of curiosity?

Very real chance you could have nailed the next four or five covers there and I do feel the disillusionment with that . I'm just coming from a position of dreading the day ZT goes and we're left with no print mags. Obviously this new mag is not on the same level  , not even close, but , I dunno.......chewing gum for the starved?

Me neither. I was convinced you were going to say Louise Browne.

They'll be giving away chewing gum and Italia 90 stickers with the next issue, mark my words!

Ah jaysus, I love those CDs.  I have fucking hundreds of them here and I do often do an auld lucky dip, stick whatever one comes to hand on and ya never know what your going to get.
I had to separate the Metal Hammer ones out from the Terrorizer, ZT  and Metal Maniacs ones though on account of the Hammer ones being filled with awful muck.
Got out of buying mags a fair few years ago for one reason and another but Christ I used to look foward to getting a new mag, sticking on the CD and reading about my favorite bands, happy times.

Yeah, I have boxes of 'em and because I have a random system of listening to things they come up regularly to hang around my stereo but, big BUT, try out your third or fourth Terrorizer CD against the latest few. When record labels stopped stumping up the cash to have their shining lights on there, well, we were left with some shit

I'm sure your right man, as I said, I got out of buying mags a fair few years ago so I must have missed the decline in Quality.
When they stopped printing Metal Maniacs I died a little inside and fell out of love with mags.

Second time in an evening this came up (Magazines in general).  I used to buy a lot of the usual suspects in my teens but would say it's been a decade or more since I even considered buying a Metal Hammer.  Still bought Terrorizer fairly frequently up to a few years back and stopped after getting a run of dud issues.  All the CDs on any of them turned to complete shit at some point too, but I loved them when I was younger.  Was lucky enough that by the time I was getting into metal properly, the brothers had rakes of 90s Kerrang and Metal Hammers knocking about that were of fairly decent quality, I remember sifting through them for ages reading old articles.

Never actually bought a ZT but read a few on shelves passing time and they seemed decent enough.

Remember when Metal Hammer stopped printing sleeves for the CDs and instead had the info that should be on the sleeve printed in the magazine, so if ya didn't keep the CD with the issue it came with ya didn't have a clue what was on it.
That was the last straw for me with Fucking Metal Hammer.

It had long gone to shit while they still had the CD slipcovers. Only the most morbid of curiosities would drive one to want to know whether the bilge currently afflicting one's ears was created by Atreyu, or The Devil Wears Prada, or Gay For Johnny Depp, or whatever other fashioncore band was flavour of the month.

I stopped buying MH in my mid teens due to that exact reason. Shcutther.

I got the postal subscription to ZT as I was finding it near impossible to locate it in any of my local Easons. I bought a few Iron Fist issues but Mc Loves criticisms pretty much echo my own sentiments, this new mag doesn't sound great tbh. Couldn't give a fuck about cover mount cds, much as I like ZT, the vast majority of the bands on their cds are muck and they generally go straight in the bin.

You'r dead right there man, awful tripe alltogether, the sleeve debacle was just the last straw, the straw that broke the camels back if you will.
Another straw was the fact that every second issue had become an Iron Maiden appreciation society publication.
"Oh look, Bruce did a poo. Isn't it amazing, look how wonderfully brown it is, and doesn't it smell fragrant. Here's a 16 page supplement about Bruces poo with loads of photos of Bruce having another poo in the cockpit of his fucking plane."
Fuck off ye cunts.
