Necrot-Mortal
The album has everything, amazing old school DM.
Fire away lads.
Three standouts for me are
Thou and Emma Ruth Rundle - May Our Chambers Be Full
Napalm Death - Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism
Urfaust - Teufelsgeist
I think the Napalm Death is stunning. I was never really a fan, but I cant stop listening to it.... probably album of the year for me...
The Blood Incantation (Hidden History) i know is 2019 but it hasnt left my ears this entire year.
Paradise Lost's Obsidian got a lot of listens too...
the new AC/DC is their best output in many years....
Napalm Death and Ulcerate for me
SUMAC and Deftones for me.
Katatonia City Burials.

It was one of your comments that put me on to that Necrot actually and it is a good one though at the moment I'd be looking toward Napalm Death myself. Skeletal Remains and Cirith Ungol released a couple of bangers as well.
Gama Bomb - Sea Savage
Wytch Hazel - III: Pentecost
Napalm Death - Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism
Sweven - The eternal resonance
Hellripper - The Affair of the Poisons
High spirits - Hard to Stop
Haunt - Flashback
Eternal Champion - Ravening Iron
Butcher - 666 Goats Carry My Chariot
Carnation - where death lies
Null - Lore of a Sleeping Forest
https://youtu.be/4fVcs_iAt9Q
Ulcerate - Stare Into Death And Be Still
Primitive Man - Immersion
Sweven - The Eternal Resonance
or
Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin kynsi (which I still haven't actually picked up!)

Sweven - The Eternal Resonance
Had seen this band name a couple of times on the board, always thought "Hmm, coincidence a band named the same as the Morbus Chron album...wonder by chance if they sound alike?"
Hadn't a clue until now it was a follow on band from MC. Have the album on, sounds deadly! Chuffed with this find.
...love the artwork too!
yes the sweven album is certainly a high point of the year, great stuff.
I was wondering when this thread would kick off. I always think it's too early to call AOTY, some bhaists released every December that get lost in the lists, e.g. Reaper "Unholy Nordic Noise" on 23 December last, and Sulphur Aeon on 21 December 2018. Plus I often end up discovering albums late. Anyway...
Bezwering is my fave so far:
https://bezwering-vanrecords.bandcamp.com/album/aan-de-wormen-overgeleverd
Never heard of this Dutch act until I randomly came across them on bandcamp. Apparently it's black metal but that doesn't do it justice. Monster production and pounding, varied tunes, love it. I must check out their previous incarnation yet.
Havukruunu and Ripped to Shreds aren't far behind:
https://naturmachtproductions.bandcamp.com/album/uinuos-sy-mein-sota
https://rippedtoshredsdeathmetal.bandcamp.com/album/luan
Really liked Cauldron Black Ram and Skeleton as well.
Ulcerate have been on the wishlist, must check out Napalm Death yet though. I didn't realise Skeletal Remains had a new one so I must check that out as well, nice one for the heads up.
I had pre-ordered Necrot but due to CD player issues since I haven't really listened to it properly yet. The advance tracks didn't seem as good as the previous but it just might need the time to soak in.
Malokarpatan - Krupinske Ohne
Voidceremony - Entropic...
Still waiting on the Eternal Champion, Transilvania and Omegavortex LPs to arrive so there could be another contender in there too.
Black Magick SS - Rainbow Nights
the first thing that has popped in to my head
On reflection I've probably enjoyed more music this year than the last 5 years combined. Rediscovered the hunger, so to speak. So here's a few more underground black metal albums I enjoyed these last few strange months.
https://youtu.be/7Bwp4XS-gkk
Cenotaphe - Monte Verita.
Melodic, rousing BM from France
https://youtu.be/3HPA8n_QtA8
Spectral Chain - Crossing Spiritual Dimensions.
Keyboard laden, eerie, haunting, atmospheric BM from Greece.
https://youtu.be/bf_cZAKzWrU
Old Sorcery - Sorrowcrown
Majestic, etherial Finnish BM with signicant ambient elements in the 90s Norse style.
https://youtu.be/7_h4f9DuhaM
Omitir - Ode
Portuguese gear. Warm, restrained, sophisticated. Parts of it reminiscent of later Burzum.
https://youtu.be/s0gcJvkgIGo
Wartodd - Pagan Pride
Raw BM in the classic Polish/Temple of the Fullmoon style.
Didn't realise that Cenotaphe was from 2020. Incredible album.
Bedsore and Voidceremony also honourable mentions.
The Sweven album definitely up there but an album that is almost a companion piece but with a more preferable balance of Death over Prog ,to me anyway,..
Lantern - Dimensions

Good call. I had been following the tracks as they were released up to a point, and then forgot to check out the whole album! A band I enjoy a lot, since they remind me of how it felt hearing Morbid Angel for the first time.
Ulcerate, Perdition Temple and Skeletal Remains for me.
Of Feather And Bone
Mork
Terror
Terror demo
That new Gjendød
Probably more stuff to add. Three of mine are eps but still excellent releases

Yeah the full album is fantatsic, album of the year for me has to be Napalm, been giving Uada - Djinn alot of time among others. But Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism just hits the spot.

Other excellent releases this year.
Malokarpatan's Krupinske Ohne is hands down the best of the year for me.
Got a good spin of Dool's Summerlands and Ulver's Flowers of Evil too.

Love Malokarpatan but just couldn't get into it, a completely different sound (imo) that didn't do much for me. Same for Napalm Death. Just didn't do anything for me either though I am a long time fan.

Like you, I thought this was a great year for black metal. I must check out some of these bands you mention, as I'm only familiar with Omitir and Cenotaphe, which, as you say, are good.
These are on my shortlist for 2020:
Butcher - 666 Goats Carry My Chariot

Acherontas - Psychic Death - The Shattering of Perceptions
https://youtu.be/J5KAaZUvRbg
Katavasia - Magnus Venator

Malokarpatan
I can't think of anything else I bought this year that was from this year. I'm sure I'm overlooking a few cool releases but I'm terrible at remembering...
Edit. The Ljosazabojstwa album was cool.
Almost forgot that Slutvomit - Copulation of Cloven Hooves came out in 2020. This is one of the best albums of the last 10 years let alone last year.

What a name.
Damn right, forgot about that one, killer album.
I think I've only listened to two albums from 2020, so I guess they're my albums of the year by default. Enjoyed both of them anyway
Enslaved - Utgard
Black Crown Initiate - Violent Portraits of Doomed Escape
Black Curse - Endless Wound
In order:
Inexorum - Moonlit Navigation
Ulthar- Providence
Ruin Lust - Mortal
Necrot - Mortal
Though tbf I need to spend more time with the Necrot.
My faves from 2020 are
Temple Nightside - Pillars of Damnation
Vassafor - To the Death.
Two more deserving of mention are Skáphe - 3 and Dearthe - Dispirited Obscurity. Only got them at the start of December but really enjoying them. The Almyrkvi / Ruins of Beverast split is deserving of an honourable mention too.
Ysengrin- Initiatio was another good one this year.
Haven't got round to listening to much new stuff and some of the things I thought were new turned out be not quite so new  :abbath:
But anyway like mclove said that new Ljosazabojstwa is fuckin cllass.
I was hoping for a bit more out of the latest Tribulation release but those vocals are so bloody samey that it just takes away from the musical developments over the last few albums.
For me the recent standout, and I haven't seen much mention of it on here, is Macabre - Carnival of Killers. Fuckin great craic album. Usual tongue massively in cheek biography of infamous serial killers but it's so much more enjoyable than I was expecting considering the underwhelming album that preceded it.
Abigor

Yes...
I'm not a big black metal fan but do like the classic stuff like Emperor, Mayhem, Immortal and Dissection etc... I wasn't at all familiar with the band Inquisition, but their new album was showing up on a lot of peoples year-end lists so I decided to give it a spin... Glad I did, It's amazing... riffs for days, darkly melodic and catchy as hell. It sounds like a mishmash of Immortal, Dissection, Bathory and even Type O in parts. Check out the start of the third song 'Necromancy through a Buried Cosmos', that chord progression and that guitar sound = Type O. Also, from around 5:38 onward, you'll hear some very tasteful guitar playing. I certainly haven't heard many bands of this ilk incorporate something like it into their sound so seamlessly, it blew my mind to be quite honest! I'm not sure if he's using a bottleneck slide, vibrato or some effect (or a combination of all) but it sounds amazing. I know he is using vibrato on his chords throughout the song but this particular part really stood out to me.
:abbath: :abbath: :abbath: :abbath:
Anyway, this album is a must-listen, even if you're not a BM fan. It's just great metal, simple as that.
If you haven't listened to the album yet check out the song 'Luciferian Rays', simply majestic! It really represents the album well.

Im surprised these lads are still getting support.
Why, did their BLM membership run out?
Nah just the singer was convicted of having kiddie porn. But hey it's black metal so to be expected I guess.
Those black leather studded peedohs. Always up to no good. :abbath:
This forum has its fair share of them anyhow 😆
I listened to the new Inquisition but it didn't really do anything for me, compared to their older ones. As micko)) kinda predicted on here, the controversy surrounding them seems to have actually bumped sales of the newest one.

Which of the older ones would be your favourite? I've listened to a few other tracks from different albums today and they all sound pretty good.
The couple of tracks I heard from the 2010 album sounded the most similar to the latest one.
Yeah, 2010's Ominous Doctrines... is a masterpiece imo. The only other one I've heard that I didn't think so much of was the one from 2016. Can't claim to have listened in detail to their whole discography, but the first two, Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult and Invoking the Majestic Throne of Satan are excellent and justly widely praised, definitely worth checking out.
Cool, I'll give Ominous Doctrines a go during the week.
Still spinning the new one for the moment.

Supplementing my earlier reply with
Stormkeep - Galdrum, really good 'medieval' black metal without any schtick, just old and cold.
Fluisteraars - Bloem, catchy and strangely uplifting Dutch black metal.
Wytch Hazel - III: Pentecost
Napalm Death - Throes...
Butcher - 666 Goats Carry My Chariot
Faceless Burial - Speciation
Eternal Champion - Ravening Iron
Havukruunu
Need to spend more time on the new Cirith Ungol to see if it's up to much use. Same with Megaton Sword (first couple of songs sound very promising thought).
Haven't even touched the new Malokarpatan but suspect that would be well up there.
I welcome this recent re-emerging from the woodwork trend! First Nazgul, then Ducky popped up again, and now spiritcrusher breaks out of hibernation!
What about you Jugz? JUGZ!? COME BACK TO US JUGZ!!! I KNOW YOU CAN HEAR US!!!

I'm regret to say that between work and a new arrival, I haven't had much time to listen to new music this year. Therefore the new Napalm Death is album of the year for me, by default at least. Fuck me though, what a release. No band that far into their career should be capable of releasing music this good, but ND seem to make it look easy.
Oranssi Pazuzu
Revenge
Bacterium
The rest: Ominous Resurrection, Ljosazabojstwa, Temple Nightside, Omegavortex, Malicious, Perdition Temple, Serpent Noir, Imperial Triumphant, Armagedda, Black Curse, Vassafor
Need more time but the few listens have been great: Mooncitadel, Question, White Magician
I only listened to the new Serpent Noir once, need to go back and spend some time with it.

Just listened to it for the first time this week. It's fucking amazing. So heavy and such a kick to the face from the first note.
