Title: Best Candlemass sans Messiah?
Post by: Black Shepherd Carnage on November 11, 2020, 11:13:35 PM
Of the non-Messiah stuff (not including the debut, natürlich) I only know King of the Grey Islands, which I liked a lot when it came out and still enjoy, and Chapter VI, which is...okay.

Are there other ones in there that are worth checking out?

Death Magic Doom and Psalms For The Dead are both great, as is the Lucifer Rising EP (though Lowe's live vocals are a bit ropey).

Cool, will check those ones out. I was at the infamous DOD Candlemass gig where Lowe was basically reading the lyrics, but vocally his performance was good, that night anyway. Ah wait, maybe you're referring to the live songs on that EP, is that it?

That's it, yeah. The 3 studio songs are great (though I prefer the version of Lucifer Rising that's on Death Magic Doom) but his vocals on the live tracks are a bit all over the place.

From the 13th Sun is one of the more under-appreciated of the non Messiah/Epicus releases that's actually really good album. Quite unique in comparison to the rest of the catalogue. Leans even more heavy in the  Black Sabbath direction.

+ 1 for 'From the 13th Sun. Overlooked. Very heavy riffs from what I remember (haven't  given it a spin in a while).

Haven't heard that one in years, I remember Droid having a good old, heavy, Sabbathy main riff.

Chapter VI all the way for me. Id rank it right after the first two albums.

Edit: just noticed you already heard this one. Another vote for From the 13th Sun

Okay, I'll spend some proper time with From the 13th Sun tomorrow. From the first couple of tracks there, it's definitely a very different affair to anything else I know by them, in a very unexpected way so far. And maybe I should give Chapter VI another go; I wouldn't have expected anyone to give it such a high ranking tbh!

I'm a sucker for anything with Tony Martin so take my opinion with a pinch of salt

I've just realised the only Candlemass I've heard is a best of album from about 15 years ago. Worth starting with Epicusand just continuing from there?

Didn't know where else to put this: Candlemass and Messiah Marcolin reuniting for a 40th anniversary appearance at Rock Hard Festival in Greece in September:

I dont think it is Messiah on vocals.  Hope I haven't gotten anyone's hopes up.
