Title: Record deals
Post by: leatherface on September 16, 2020, 09:34:29 PM
I was watching this video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPHjNG1m22I

..in which Dave Lombardo describes the record industry, specifically the deal that was made for Slayer.

It shocks me how little money some of these 'big' names make when signing deals. What is the state of record deals now and how can bands nowadays make a living from their music? How does it work now when social media seems to be the key factor in making it 'big`' ?

Seems to me Dave Lombardo was on the ball and the rest didn't want to hear it. Don't know if they were bought out as he said, you'd have to hope not.

To be fair, what he's talking about here is a management deal not a record deal. Bands absolutely do get screwed by record labels but it's usually done by not giving them their share of royalties or physical sales. Tour or merchandise income is usually a separate thing. Rick Sales, Slayer's manager and his team of cronies is who Lombardo is talking about.
