Hit the running fairly hard once lockdown started and haven't looked back. Running 4-5 times a week now on a mixture of country roads and running track. Feels good to be a bit lighter on the feet. Strangely enough though I find I much prefer to listen to podcasts or audiobooks out running whereas with the gym it's metal all the way.
Not really arsed getting back into the gym or pool for a long time though as all the ones near me are pre-book only.
Was looking at investing in a barbell for the house but can't find one anywhere for a decent price.
I'm running every morning as I have a marathon at the end of the year, progressing is a great feeling. I haven't been into work for months so no great effort needed to get out and doing it. A bit of cycling or swimming as an occasional substitute to keep the joints from crumbling. The endorphin release after a solid run is hard to beat. Amazing how quickly 150€ runners degrade with consistent running! Podcasts and things, I'd need to be walking, I need some 'choons', like house or whatever to distract while running, otherwise the urge to stop before time can get overwhelming. I bought a decent garmin GPS back at the start of the year, absolutely great bit of kit.
I hit the gym most afternoon last for 40 minutes or so, although I still don't really know what I'm doing, fair weather weightlifting form. I just choose 5 exercises, 4 reps each and out the door.
My diet is not great though, so the gains are not really what they should be.
I run 10k twice a week, play football and do very basic barbell weights. My diet is shocking though.
I used to cycle loads in my early 20s, but diabetes put the kibosh on that. Waking up in a heap on the side of the road after blacking out = no craic. I still cycle a bit, but it's almost upsetting getting on the bike knowing I can do only about 10 to 15% of what I used to do (could easily clock 80 to 100km on my old cycling sessions).
It's a hooer just to maintain a regular weight (the Big D predisposed you to retaining fat, and a side effect of my medication is weight gain alomg with an increased appetite), but diet has been the saving grace. Pretty lean and clean outside a bit of dirty food and a beer at the weekend.
Still though, I've a nice wooded area about 2km from the gaff, so a walk to, through and from there is really nice. Also trek up one of the local mountains (Knocknarea, supposed resting place of Queen Maedbh, for ye history fans). It's only about 350m in elevation, but there's a super view up there, which is part of the fun.
A previous girlfriend of mine is a diabetic, type 1 (like yourself I imagine) and it was hard for her to do strenuous exercise too. She had a little gizmo attached to her body at all times which provided a constant flow of insulin later, which improved things a lot for her.
Diabetic, used to go out with me AND Argentinian. Dealt a bad hand by the big fella!
Started cycling to work just before Christmas as I got fed up sitting on a bus for up to an hour to travel the 8 miles into town! Ridiculous I tolerated it for so long. Since lockdown I've taken up cycling the trails in the hills over the roads. I'm almost 44 so was never going to take up mountain biking properly but I love getting away up the hills. A good workout, peace and quiet, fresh air and stunning scenery. Rarely see anyone else. Found some technical trails that suit my ability on a bike and I'm enjoying blowing off steam in the evenings. Also lockdown has seen me cycle off nearly 2st in weight so not bad. An average route is about 15miles with some climbs involved. A good work out. Currently off the bike though as I went over the bars last weekend and fucked my shoulder
As someone who has always wanted to take up proper cycling, are there any beginner trails you would recommend?
I am unable to run or lift weights anymore due to some issues. Currently scoping out a bike from someone in work, hopefully able to get it as I really want to go cycling some trails. Also would like suggestions for good beginner ones, Belfast preferably but can go a bit further.
Roughly tripled the weekly running mileage during lockdown, up to half marathon distance. Great to have the time to do it in the morning instead of commuting.

Fair play lad, that's an achievement.

I'm type 2 myself, but raised eyebrows when I was diagnosed (at 28) as I was much younger than most new type 2 cases, much older than type 1. I produce some insulin that doesn't work as well as it should. Current tablets stimulate pancreas to make more. Working okay so far, but the side effect is they also raise testosterone... itching for a fight some days without even realising it :abbath:
Walking around with a constant horn must get awkward too?
Play ball twice a week. Hate gyms with a passion. Cant stand running. Thankfully drums is great cardio and I do that a lot so that and the ball and I'm happy out.
Yeah fat drummers were always a source of head scratching for me. Stick on the Fitbit next time you have a jam or practice and let us know how many calories you burn. A 5k run at a moderate pace will burn between 450 and 500, depending on your BMI, so you'd imagine a gig would double that at least for most drummers.

Always thought the same, Gene Hoglan must have done nothing but drum and eat pizza
I put on a shitload of weight over lockdown so need to try working it off. Been starting a bit of yoga because my ankle and knee are shot so can't do anything too high impact. Was getting into bouldering at the start of the year so going to go back to that when the climbing centre opens back up

I get a free pass on not doing the school run at least :abbath:
Edit - joking, I don't have kids! Fucking new page, hup.

Herself got a fitbit a few weeks ago. I'll stick or on the next time I'm jamming and let ya know how I get on.
Hoisted my bike saddle up a few inches and I've entered a new world of arse pain. Went for a spin around the local roads yesterday, for the flattest part of the country the midlands has some horrific inclines.

Dogging on the backroads will do that to you :P
 terrible spot for dogging in fairness, you can see for miles in all directions!
