Title: Decoryah
Post by: Eoin McLove on July 18, 2020, 11:08:50 AM
I checked out these old Finnish gothic doomers' album, 'Wisdom Floats', on YouTube last night and have to say the obscurity of their sound was very appealing indeed so I sent off for a CD on eBay.  €27 with postage is steep enough for a CD but fuck it,  it's one I think I'll give a fair bit of attention. Any fans here? Is their other stuff worth coughing up for?

You had me at gothic doomers but the production is very murky and doesn't do the music any favours. Musically it's spot on n all.

I'm all for the murky production which I'm sure will come as a massive surprise

Aye, huge surprise! I'll give the album another coupla listens. It's defo demo quality as the mix isn't perfect, even apart from the production side of it. The music is very well put together though. I just think for all the elements to stand out, a clearer production is needed.

From a review I read on MA they were unhappy with the mix on this album and the one after it was much clearer. I haven't listened to that one yet,  though,  so I can't say.

Real hidden gem there Mc Love, spent many a wallowing afternoon on the old couch with it,haven't listened to it in yonks, mind. What's coming back to me is those floaty, ethereal female vocals and that's more often or not a No-No for me but  yeah, the type of album you could lay down and drift off too in the best possible way. Definitely will have to be dusted off. Such a unique cover too.
Quick check on the Archives and a bit disconcerted to find that Metal Blade signed them ( for seven albums!) , don't remember that at all, have the original Witchunt Records cd. Obviously lost track of them but never in a million years would I have put them in the same sentence as Metal Blade.
Also surprised to note they reformed last year, no output as yet I assume?

I haven't a clue to be honest as they are new to me. A reissue of this on vinyl would be welcome. That sorta shitty but still cool artwork would look shitty but still cool blown up to that size.

This is class. Never heard of them before. The 90s underground is some gift.

It reminds me of Unholy who I had on my rotation station about 10 years ago. Must revisit them too.

Yeah, good call. Defo has some Unholy sounding elements in there.

Ah definitely revisit Unholy, such a fantastic band!

Must give this another listen..the name is etched in my head from the period in the mid 90s where it felt like every zine I picked up had an interview with these, Chorus of Ruin, Third & The Mortal, Tristitia, random Holy Records band and whatever other "atmospheric metal" was coming out at the time. all of which I ignored because I was busy trying to get my hands on the Murder Basket or Desperate Corruption demos or whatever.

Without listening, does this involve parpy "orchestra" keyboards, acoustic sounding guitars and vaguely out of tune clean vocals? Are there flowers on the cover? This stuff was like the underground metal equivalent of the emo stuff that was going on in hardcore at the same time if you ask me

Giving this its first run through the stereo as I've had it in the car since I got it. It's all over the gaff in terms of mastering with some songs quiet and others loud (naturally this stupid shit gives me ideas and inspiration for my own stuff,  hehe), yet I'm enjoying it a lot. Certain parts sound great through good speakers and for other parts, due to the inconsistency of the sound quality, it makes little difference. Wonked up to fuck!

Holy shit I'd be all over that, all I have is a cdr of Wisdom Floats, Keep us updated.
Limited to 274 copies..pretty random!
Under licence from Metal Blade so you'd imagine they'd have a few on their webshop when they're released.

Wow! That's a blast from the past. Used to love Decoryah back in the day - have both the albums on CD.......somewhere.....at home. Definitely cueing them up on Spotify on the way home this evening.

Fans should also check out fellow Finns This Empty Flow (who rose from the ashes of the immense Thergothon) who have a similar vibe albeit more indie influences.

Man, Finland sure did produce some quality metal back in the 90s!

I didn't think This Empty Flow and Decoryah sounded similar. I must revisit then with that in mind.

More a 'vibe' TBH rather than being very similar.
