Title: 25 Years Ago {1995}
Post by: Kurt Cocaine on July 01, 2020, 07:39:24 PM
This article popped up in my news feed today. Ten of the crackers released in 1995, of which I had nine. As the article says, it was the bridging time between Grunge and Nu-Metal. Jaysus, time flies.

Weak sauce. There were three I found listenable at the time  - KFAD, Ugly & Astro-Creep and I've warmed up to a couple more since then but, if that's the best of the year... jaysus  :(

The last great year of metal for me. Some great albums there that still stand up today.

Nola and Draconian Times are still 2 favourites for me.

Demanufacture was so unique at the time.

White Zombie was great craic, still is in fact.

Life Of Agony were so good back then too.

96 had some quality too but it all fell off a cliff after that.

Fuckin' White Zombie and also Deftones' weakest album by far, but no Symbolic.

Had a few of those alright, saw White Zombie  and Fear  Factory that year.Id have pushed it a further year to 97 before things started to really go to shit!

Demanufacture is an all out classic, Destroy Erase Improve & Draconian Times are also great albums. KFAD was easily the weakest of the Patton/FNM albums until Sol Invictus was curled out, pretty average with a couple of outstanding tracks. Had a brief period where I loved Slaughter Of The Soul & Adrenaline but the shine wore off pretty quickly.

NOLA - great music, shit vocals. White Zombie always seemed like a novelty band and Life Of Agony were always shite.

Haven't heard Dopes To Infinity, I gather it's one of their better ones and I like most theirs that I have heard.

Yeah there's a load more I'd have instead of some of those choices. Storm of the Lights Bane, Imaginations from the Other Side, The Gallery, Disco Volante...

I think this article is edging more towards the mainstream end of things.

To be fair, the list is pretty laughable when one scratches beneath the surface but as was mentioned already it's more of a mainstream list. The only one of those albums I never got into at any stage was At The Gates.

AIC self titled,  Storm of the Lights Bane,  The Angel and the Dark River and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness came out in 95, all I would rate highly.

Each of those is vastly superior to most of the ones on that list.

I loved SSS at the time. I could happily listen to it now.  Weeds is a banger!

I used to love it at the time, but I tried it out a while back and it gave me bad vibes. The video for Weeds is atrocious now I think of it as well. I like River Runs Red and Ugly a lot and I have great time for the 1989-1999 compilation but I'm not mad on the rest of it despite sort of wanting to like it. I remember buying Caputo's solo album back in the day as well and it was rough enough

Caputo's album was brilliant. Essentially just pop rock with some, admittedly, cringey lyrics in places,  but insanely catchy.

It has a few good tunes to be fair to it, but I wouldn't love it. I have no problem with the fact it is pure pop at all, just didn't think it was a strong album overall.

I owned "King For A Day..." (and a copy of lead single "Digging The Grave") and "Dopes To Infinity". Some of the rest were copies. And others I never bothered with.

As previously mentioned - there were albums released in 1995 that were better than what's on that list. Rancid's "And Out Come The Wolves..." "Dear You" by Jawbreaker and Fugazi's "Red Medicine" come to mind.

Had a bit of a flashback there.

The mid-90s was when my love of music really took hold. I had my first after-school job with that few quid in my pocket Friday afternoons in Comet Records, the Virgin Megastore and HMV became the highlight of my week. Buying what I could afford and hiding other albums until the next week. I remember putting Cypress Hill's "Temples Of Boom"(another good record from '95) into the classical section of Virgin until the next week when I had the money to buy it.

Outside of metal, 1995 was a year that produced some LPs that I still reach for every few weeks and know back to front. "Different Class" by Pulp (one of my all-time favourite albums), "The Bends" by Radiohead, "Insomniac" by "Green Day, "Ghost of Tom Joad" by Bruce Springsteen, "I Should Coco" by Supergrass, Foo Fighters debut, Sleater-Kinney's first record, Pavement's "Wowee Zowee", "Above" by Mad Season.

I used to get very depressed in my teens and think everything was shit in the mid-90s. Turns out that it was quite possibly the best (or at least consistently good) period of music that I'll ever live through. As someone said in a different thread - if I'd known even a small percentage of what I know now...

Then again, nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

I used to do that in HMV as well, and I'd be looking for what I thought would be the least likely section for anything to be bought from. Sometimes they wouldn't be there when I went back either.

I got into metal in the mid 80s, lucky to be around for the beginnings of thrash, hardcore/crossover and Death metal as well as the explosion of Metallica. That is some list from 1990.

"Practice What You Preach" and "beefed-up production" in the same sentence? I'm guessing the writer hasn't heard it then

It reads like a list of "bands who went on to be revered in 2020 but released an album that year" rather than a best of. 89 was one of the best years of Metal, IMO, and that's a relatively weak list given just how good it really was.

Some others for consideration:

Annihilator - Alice in Hell
Atheist - Piece of Time
Badlands - Badlands
Coroner - No More Color
The Cult - Sonic Temple
Dark Angel - Leave Scars
Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska
Kreator - Extreme Aggression
Lȧȧz Rockit - Annihilation Principle
Masters of Reality – Masters of Reality
Metal Church - Blessing in Disguise
Mötley Crüe - Dr. Feelgood
Nuclear Assault - Handle with Care
Onslaught - In Search of Sanity
Overkill - The Years of Decay
Primus - Suck on This
Rush - Presto
Sabbat - Dreamweaver
Joe Satriani - Flying in a Blue Dream
Savatage - Gutter Ballet
Soundgarden - Louder Than Love
Toxik - Think This
Voivod - Nothingface
W.A.S.P. - The Headless Children
Watchtower - Control and Resistance
Xentrix - Shattered Existence

Whether you like them or not, or whether you like the outcome, Sonic Temple and Dr. Feelgood had an incredible influence on where Metallica went next and are massive albums in their own right. Nothingface is one of the greatest of all time. Louder Than Love and The Headless Children, absolute undisputed classics. The rest would rank very highly, personally, with the likes of Control and Resistance, Perfect Symmetry and Masters of Reality being particularly significant. Such a good year.

Savatage - Gutter Ballet
Voi-Vod - Nothingface
Suicidal Tendencies - Controlled By Hatred
Annihilator - Alice in Hell
Terrorizer - World Downfall
24-7 Spyz - Harder Than You
Nuclear Assault - Handle With Care
The Cult - Sonic Temple
Black Sabbath - Headless Cross
King Diamond - Conspiracy
Masters of Reality - Masters of Reality
King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska
W.A.S.P. - The Headless Children

Yup, it was indeed a great year for music. Luckily I worked in the family business back then and had a bit of income to spoil myself with the odd purchase or two every week. I was lucky too that there was a decent record store in the little town I lived in.
Brilliant times....
I owned a stereo with a CD player for a full year before I bought my first CD (Metallica - AJFA).
They were just too bloody expensive to begin with.
You could buy 2 tapes or records sometimes for the same price as a CD...

Repulsion - Horrified
Abhorer - Rumpus of the Undead
D.R.I. - Thrash Zone will always hold a special place in my heart
Death SS - Black Mass
Death Yell - Vengeance from Darkness
Running Wild - Death or Glory
