Title: Moonspell recommendations
Post by: Eoin McLove on March 13, 2020, 10:22:32 PM
Moonspell are a band I've long ignored.  I think it's because when I first heard them in the late 90s or so they had gone full retard into electro goth metal crap but today in work I was chatting to one of the lads and he recommended their early stuff as being quite unique black metal.  I just fired on 'Alma Mater' on YouTube and it sounded good to me so I reckon 'Wolfheart' will have to be purchased.  Any other recommendations of decent stuff of theirs of the non-wimpy variety?

Some of their "wimpier" stuff, I'd consider gothic. Wolfheart was my intro too. Check out Irreligious. Might still be a bit light for you though.
They're black metal lite, all things considered.

More recent (ish) great tunes imo.
From Lowering Skies
of darkness and hope.

If those tracks happen to do owt for you, maybe explore more.

I tuned out of Moonspell for a very long time despite loving Wolfheart. One day I came across Irreligious in a record shop and took a gamble. I soon regretted not having heard it when it came out, it quiet simply is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Just try it for what it is without hoping for it to be one thing or another.

For me it's soaring, uplifting, belter of an album. The structures are just sublime and everything very memorable, no filler whatsoever and it all fits together nicely. Having said all that, it will probably be wasted on ya for being too tame!

Oh yeah after the late discovery of Irreligious, I was excited to hear what followed. Alas Sin / Pecado wasn't my thing and I gave up after that.

Their Morbid God period was fair popular in tape trading circles back in the day. I haven't listened to them in perhaps 20 years, but this should be more your cupan tae:

Nice one,  I'll give that a spin later.

I had a few songs on from Wolfheart and one from Irreligious last night.  Super duper fucking cheesy but that one song is so good.  I might nab a CD and see if the fromage grows on me a bit.

Night eternal is by far their best album. Excellent songwriting and the production is heavy as fuck on it.

🤔 Maybe writing off newer material might have been a mistake then. Saying it's by far their best album is a bold statement, I'll have to investigate, thanks

Under the moonspell ep is excellent also.
Wolfheart, Irreligious and sin/pecado full lengths are great.

I never got into irreligious. For me it's one of their most boring albums and it just seems to go on and on plodding away.  Even wolfheart has some awful crap on it. Memorial and Night eternal would be my 2 favourite.

I've never really given them much time but parts I heard had good music let down by poor vocals.
I've read that Wolfheart and Irreligious are the best to check out.
The album sleeve of Irreligious has always turned me off.

Sorry, I have no strong feelings about Moonspell one way or the other; that reply just got a proper lol out of me.

Have liked Under The Moonspell, loved Wolfheart. Didn't like Irreligious at all, and  it was the same for the 2 following albums too.
Have completely given up on even trying to listen to anything after The Butterfly effect.
Am not sure if it is helping to answer the question made in the OP, but there ya go.

The first Moonspell I ever got was Sin/Peccado and it's still my favourite .

The first few up to Sin/Pecado are great. After that I checked out.
Extinct was pretty decent. The new one is quite Floyd sounding here and there.
Definitely a band you either like or hate. The goth thing gets a bit tedious.

An utterly fantastic live act.
