Title: Cassette storage
Post by: Eoin McLove on December 06, 2018, 01:11:33 PM
Any suggestions for good storage for tapes that keeps them out of the way yet still easily accessible? I currently have several stacks around four foot high which is a disaster.  The room I have my music collection in is on the cozy side of things so I'm quite limited for space.

standard billy bookcase (https://www.ikea.com/ie/en/products/storage-furniture/bookcases/billy-bookcase-white-art-80263832/) from Ikea might do the trick?  If you had more room i'd suggest the cubes but they're better for vinyl.  The one linked there is slim enough and would hold a fair few stacks of tapes.  Could see if you can grab an extra panel or two from the damaged section and diy them in yourself to separate bettter.

Failing that, find a second hand shop that carries tapes and they might have one of those old style wire mesh racks for display, they would sell it to you.

Just sold a couple of cool racks as I got rid of all my tapes recently. Vinyl only from now on.

Back to your request. I actually bought mine from a Christian site in the us, they deal with church supplies. Couldn't make it up. They were the business, held 100 each and easily wall mounted. Will see if they're still operational and post link.

There ya go. $30 but I'd imagine shipping is appalling these days. Got mine years back. Also got a kick out of filling it with blasphemous cassette tapes.

Looks ideal but yeah,  postage might be a bastard, especially as I would need to get a few of them.  Might see if I can find something similar locally...

You'd find the odd one on adverts but my god that place is full of time wasters.

Have one of these and I remember postage not being too awful.

Handy and cheap enough to make if you're any way useful with a saw. Get a backboard (https://www.woodies.ie/building-materials/timber/medium-density-fibreboard-mdf-3-2mm-x-915mm-x-610mm-1007247) and something like this (https://www.woodies.ie/cheshire-mouldings-2-4mx44x9-pine-strip-wood-tm634-1114126) to make horizontal shelves on it. Glue (https://www.woodies.ie/gorilla-236ml-wood-glue-1148470) them onto the backboard at the spacing desired and then tap a few nails (https://www.woodies.ie/115-round-wire-nails-1-6-x-30mm-368298) through the back into your horizontal shelves to reinforce, maybe every 10cm or so. Use two strips of the backboard either side, glued and nailed to the end of each shelf and it'll support the weight of a few hundred tapes no problem. Because you're not putting a spacer between each tape, you can get more tapes into a smaller space than with the commercial offerings.

Yeah, making smething is also an option.
