Formed in early 2016, The Grief features members from Cork-based metal bands Corr Mhóna and For Ruin, some of whose members had originally played together in a Katatonia tribute band. The Grief plays a mixture of doom-tinged metal with influences from all the aforementioned bands & made some live appearances in 2017 before recording an initial unreleased demo with the initial line up of the band: Robert Farrow - Drums, Kieran O'Leary - Bass, Paul Quinn - Guitars, Stephen Quinn - Vocals, John Murphy – Guitars.
With the drum position vacated by Farrow who has since moved abroad, the band decided to focus on recording their first 9 songs during 2019 at Murphy's home studio in North Cork. Recordings were completed in late 2019 with Murphy performing the drum parts while a new drummer was being recruited.
The 9 songs have been mastered by Dan Swano at Unisound (www.unisound.se) in January 2020 and the band plans to release the material digitally via a number of releases during 2020.

That cover and logo is one of the best things I've seen in a long time. Big for ruin fan so will definitely be checking this out when I get home.
I like the sound of that. Hearing touches of Corr Mhóna, Mael Mordha and a good dose of Paradise Lost. I'll echo the sentiment above, the logo and artwork are fantastic. Who did the painting? The production is massive too. I'll grab a CD or vinyl and look forward to listening through better speakers. Nice work.
This is excellent stuff, and I'll echo the sentiments above about the cover, it suits the music perfectly. Nice one.
A good dose of paradise lost? Sounds like something off Medusa to me.
I'm looking forward to hearing the entire EP. Hopefully there'll be a few more surprises to be discovered. I think nasty death growls and a few eerie keyboards/organs would add extra depth and intrigue but then again, I would say that.
Thanks folks.
Artwork by Slava Gerj & logo by Marc O'Grady.
The rest of the material definitely has some growls/synths/strings... EP out by the end of the month.
You can't bate a bit of PL....
Sweet. Will there be a physical release?

Sweet. Will there be a physical release?
No solid plan for that for now at least anyway - a few digital EPs will come out in coming months & maybe a physical release of all songs afterwards depending on interest...
Sounds great
Love the harmonies
I really like this. Not a genre I know much about but I think I hear a bit of a Pallbearer influence.
Yeah, defo a bit of Pallbearer in there.

Sounds great. Keen to hear some synths as well, think it would really bolster the sound you got going. As others have said, the artwork is savage!
Pallbearer, hmm, must check them out so, never heard them
Ta for the recommendation...

Ask Paul ;)
I would echo what the lads have said this sounds great and the vocals also.
Looks like Feb 28th (fingers crossed) is the release date for the EP....
This is great stuff. Looking forward to hearing the EP in full.
Fuck sake, John...
I had asked Paul ages ago about ye playing URBAN ASSAULT. Timing would have been perfect.
You find a drummer yet?
Ah we're not ready to gig just yet...hopefully have a drummer sorted so we'll get going then with gigs once everything is good to go.

This sounds fantastic. It would be a shame for it not to see a physical release in some form or other. Musically it sounds focused yet varied and the vocal performance is tremendous. It strikes a perfect balance between vulnerability and bravado. Serious stuff.
Edit. There is some incredible riffing happening in Call of the Void. Yowsa!
Cheers thanks...it seems to be everywhere now, like COVID.

Really digging this EP lads. Some great stuff in there, particularly call of the void. I'd certainly echo what others have said about a physical release, would love to see it on vinyl!
Looking forward to hearing more, this stuff is top shelf!
Thanks for all the kind words folks, getting a great reaction it seems. Hope to get gigging in the coming months...

I so wanna change the cover art to display "The Grief of a Cork Accent", would fit perfectly 👌🏻
We've been confirmed today for the Iron Mountain Metal Fest on May 3, Leitrim...

Been youtubing the EP a fairy bit. Get it out on CD and LP, ta fuck. Take my money!
Yep, CD please.
Thanks chaps,
No plans for tapes/cd's/vinyl for now still anyway. We have 5 more songs planned to come out as a second digital EP in the summer, self released. But we're checking for label interest between now and then and if we get a bite then no doubt there'll be a CD release. Failing that (and our current plan) there'll be the 2nd digital EP and then maybe at end of year, we'll consider a self-release of all 9 songs on a limited CD run. For now

Hadn't made through a whole doom metal album twice in a roll since Abysmal Grief's Blasphema Secta.... this is so good!!! It reeks of My Dying bride and Paradise Lost and it still has its own thing going on.
Superb stuff!! It would be a shame not see this being released on vinyl.
This is the rare kind of band that would sicken your hole by how good they are and that truly is the best praise I can give.
Thanks folks, very much appreciated!

Ah, interesting read, roll on Descent! And a gig with Graveyard Dirt perhaps? 👍
I have this on here now. A gig with Mourning Beloveth and Graveyard Dirt would be great alright.
Indeed it would....
A gig anywhere with anyone would be great these days for that matter...!
I have no idea how, but we got nominated for some metal Eurovision thing somehow... naturally free publicity is welcome so please give us a 1 vote at the link below!

Maybe ye were mixed up with Carnal Tomb already releasing "Ascend" and "Descend" as two separate releases??

I had Ascend already, with another recording in my wish list for a future investigative listen. Checking things before BC waive fees again and only copped the name and the re-recording of the same tracks.
